A Comparative Study Of Conceptual Metaphors In Indonesian And Chinese Economic Headlines, Hendy Yuniarto Dec 2025

A Comparative Study Of Conceptual Metaphors In Indonesian And Chinese Economic Headlines, Hendy Yuniarto

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya

This study examines how economic concepts are metaphorically constructed in Indonesian and Chinese news headlines. Employing the Lakoff and Johnson's framework of Conceptual Metaphor Theory, the study analyzes and compares conceptual metaphors in economic news headlines from CNBC Indonesia and China Business Network published between January and April 2025. Employing a qualitative methodology guided by MIPVU, the study mapped conceptual economic metaphors in a corpus of 500 economic news headlines. The investigation demonstrates a significant overlap in the conceptualization of economic events in both languages: economic actions are physical movements, business is a natural force, economy is a competition, money …

Star Wars: Andor – An Abolitionist Study Guide, Marcelo Garzo Montalvo, Isaac Ginsberg Miller

Feminist Pedagogy

This study guide provides a set of activities for teaching abolition through Season 1 of the speculative fiction TV series Star Wars: Andor (2022). Through the practice of critical literacy (viewing, reading, and analysis), we offer various ideas on how to engage Andor as a relevant pedagogical tool for studying and teaching abolitionist movement histories and methodologies. By guiding students through a critical analysis of this widely-circulated, mainstream cultural text, we seek to activate an abolitionist pedagogical lens that can be applied across various genres and media – making tangible connections between popular culture and political struggles writ large. These …

The Influence Of High School Art Courses On Graphic Communications Students, Mackenzie Crawford

All Theses

This study examines the influence of high school art courses on students’ pursuing a degree in graphic communications (GC) at Clemson University. The purpose is to explore how prior high school art courses impact students’ major choice, preparedness, and academic success within GC. While creativity is central to the field, limited research addresses how early exposure to art integration shapes students’ readiness for college-level technical and design programs.

Grounded in theories of experiential learning and career development, this study builds upon the research by Moss, Benus, and Tucker (2018), who found that school-based arts programs enhance executive function and academic …

Community-Based Participatory Sound Play For Critical Holistic Learning, Shannon Perry, Emmie Pierce, Jon Vogt Nov 2025

Community-Based Participatory Sound Play For Critical Holistic Learning, Shannon Perry, Emmie Pierce, Jon Vogt

International Journal of Lifelong Learning in Art Education

This visual essay explores what unfolded during a month-long participatory sonic space in a community art gallery in the southeastern United States. We walk through the multiple sound stations we designed to provoke playful interactions and challenge dominant hierarchical binaries that often persist in gallery and art education space (e.g., artist/audience, instrument/non-instrument object, music/noise, culture/nature). While considering these various spaces we created for nudging visiting audience members to engage with diverse sonorous objects in becoming active musicmakers, thus becoming audience-participants, we also consider the concepts underpinning our design decisions. We conclude by considering how the living sound exhibit and participatory …

Red Thread, Unknotted: A Visual Self-Inquiry Into Becoming Artist /Educator, Jennifer Jervis Nov 2025

Red Thread, Unknotted: A Visual Self-Inquiry Into Becoming Artist /Educator, Jennifer Jervis

International Journal of Lifelong Learning in Art Education

This arts-based self-inquiry presents a counternarrative of one woman artist/educator navigating identity formation, agency, and resistance within the gendered structures of the contemporary art world. Informed by posthuman feminist theory and guided by a/r/tography, the study uses artmaking as both inquiry and data to challenge the persistent divide between artist and art educator—particularly as experienced by women. Through reflexive writing and textile-based creation, the author offers a material and embodied critique of the systemic expectations that diminish women’s artistic authority and invisibilize their creative labor. The resulting work becomes a site of resistance, reclaiming artist identity through the layered intersections …

Freedom To Create, Freedom To Teach: Lessons From A Liberatory Artmaking Practice, Andrea Allen Nov 2025

Freedom To Create, Freedom To Teach: Lessons From A Liberatory Artmaking Practice, Andrea Allen

International Journal of Lifelong Learning in Art Education

This essay explores the question, “How can a liberatory art practice inform a liberatory art teaching practice?” by examining the artistic process of Iranian artist Mahbube Parnian. Through four key themes (freedom to experiment, learning in community, identity exploration, and art as language) this essay draws parallels between Mahbube’s liberatory artmaking and pedagogical strategies that foster inclusive, student-centered classrooms. Framed within a socio-political climate that increasingly restricts liberatory teaching, this work argues that preserving justice-oriented, creative practices is not only essential to student well-being, but also an act of resistance.

Practicing Freedom: Rethinking Art Education Through Resistance And Observation, Barbara Drobot Nov 2025

Practicing Freedom: Rethinking Art Education Through Resistance And Observation, Barbara Drobot

International Journal of Lifelong Learning in Art Education

In the post-Soviet space, art education has increasingly been shaped by tensions between traditional academic approaches and the rise of informal, entertainment-oriented models of what is called “creative development”.

After a classical academic art school, many students give up drawing because of the complex presentation of information. In contrast to specialized art education, most modern creative studios for children have reformatted their approach to step-by-step instructions and copying of samples, which limits the independence of students and suppresses artistic development. In this article, the author offers a critical analysis of template teaching methods and substantiates the need to move to …

Drawing Disintegration: A Twice-Exceptional Individual’S Autoethnographic Inquiry Into Graphic Narrative Creation As A Tool For Processing Trauma, Natalie J. Krusemeier Nov 2025

Drawing Disintegration: A Twice-Exceptional Individual’S Autoethnographic Inquiry Into Graphic Narrative Creation As A Tool For Processing Trauma, Natalie J. Krusemeier

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This autoethnographic study explores the researcher’s lived experience of childhood trauma as a twice exceptional individual with an arts-based autoethnography research design, specifically in the form of graphic narrative. Grounded in Dabrowski’s Theory of Positive Disintegration (TPD), this study examines how emotional and sensory intensity, overexcitability (OE), and psychological disintegration intersect with twice-exceptional (2e) identity development and identity authenticity potential. Data sources include personal artifacts from childhood and adulthood—journals, letters, graphic narrative, documents, and photographs—alongside reflective writings and completed graphic narrative pages. Using descriptive coding and TPD’s developmental levels as analytic lenses, the study interprets the processes of disintegration and …

Pedagogical Escapism And Western Performativity: A Psycho-Aesthetic Critique Of Belly-Dance Adaption Symbolics, Maryam Farahani Nov 2025

Pedagogical Escapism And Western Performativity: A Psycho-Aesthetic Critique Of Belly-Dance Adaption Symbolics, Maryam Farahani

Comparative Woman

This paper addresses positionality misreading in Western pedagogical adaptions of belly dancing. Raqs Sharqi, known in the West as belly dancing, is a predominantly West Asian and North African discipline and performance art with multimodal varieties, globally taught and practiced while crossing sport, narratology, and story-telling boundaries. As a unique performance activity, it portrays a dynamic entertainment space to connect one’s multiple identities. I argue that Raqs Sharqi, not only as an aesthetic-educational art form but also, perhaps unwittingly, reiterated as an Orientalist communication trope in belly dancing, has forged East-West performativity models. However, the historical education-literature for Western women …

Staff Scholarship - New Zealand

This article explores the integration of te reo Māori and Pacific languages into the first-year songwriting programme at the SAE Creative Institute. Co-authored by educators Molly Devine and Saylene Tanielu-Ulberg, the piece reflects on how collaborative songwriting serves as a powerful vehicle for wairua (indefinable spiritual essence) and cultural identity. By centering ancestral knowledge, cultural metaphors, and indigenous worldviews—such as the relational space of va—the curriculum empowers Māori and Pacific students to create music without fear. Ultimately, the authors highlight how reclaiming language and culture through music acts as a vital form of awakening and creative resistance against political …

Exploring Language Through Systemic Functional Linguistics: Importance Of Communicating And Developing Academic Language For Multilingual Learners, Yana Shifrina-Piljovin Oct 2025

Exploring Language Through Systemic Functional Linguistics: Importance Of Communicating And Developing Academic Language For Multilingual Learners, Yana Shifrina-Piljovin

Journal of English Learner Education

Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) is a comprehensive theory of language that offers a unique perspective on how we use language to communicate and create meaning. SFL provides educators with a powerful theoretical framework for understanding how language functions in various contexts and how this knowledge can be applied to enhance classroom instruction. Developed by linguist Michael Halliday in the 1960s, SFL has become an influential framework for understanding linguistic metafunctions, from everyday conversations to academic discourse. The "systemic" aspect of SFL refers to the idea that language is a network of systems, each offering a set of choices for expressing …

Space For New History: Stony Island Arts Bank, Seb Taylor Oct 2025

Space For New History: Stony Island Arts Bank, Seb Taylor

Digital Laboratory: Publisher of Internet Journal

The Stony Island Arts Bank (SIAB) in Southside Chicago was designed and founded as a piece of art itself, with the organizational structure being a museum of Black cultural production. This article examines how the institution constructs an epistemology of Blackness through its archival practices, community programming, and spatial claims on the South Side. Founded by artist Theaster Gates through the Rebuild Foundation, the SIAB positions institutional design as an art medium, operating in productive tension with orthodox museum methods. The permanent collections—including the Johnson Publishing Company archives and Frankie Knuckles vinyl collection—function as epistemological records of Black self-documentation unmediated …

An Interview With An Instagram Archivist: @404mph Interviews @Onlystarleft, 404mph (On Instagram)

Digital Laboratory: Publisher of Internet Journal

An Interview with an Instagram Archivist: @404MPH Interviews @ONLYSTARLEFT is a dialogue conducted entirely through iMessage, presented as both a publication and a designed artifact. Within this text exchange, the conversation navigates themes of digital preservation, authorship, and self-curation—examining how social media aesthetics transform personal experience into collective memory. @ONLYSTARLEFT reflects on the act of archiving not as static documentation but as a living, participatory practice shaped by the speed and impermanence of online culture. Formally, the project recognizes the iPhone as a cultural mediator—its interface shaping not only how we communicate, but how we perceive and construct value within …

The Self-Curating Musician: An Innovative Concept And An Intensive Learning Experience By Systemic Design Thinking, Joris Blanckaert, Ellen Loots, Saskia Westerduin, Pawan V. Bhansing Oct 2025

The Self-Curating Musician: An Innovative Concept And An Intensive Learning Experience By Systemic Design Thinking, Joris Blanckaert, Ellen Loots, Saskia Westerduin, Pawan V. Bhansing

Journal of Arts Entrepreneurship Education

Self-curation is an emerging notion in the artistic practice that we propose as an alternative to the questioned notion of entrepreneurship in the realm of classical music. Systemic Design Thinking (SDT) methods helped conceptualize self-curation and develop an intensive, week-long learning experience. Participants validated the self-curation concept and its five components: activating creativity, seeking uniqueness, developing a discourse, understanding the performance practice and engaging communities. Our study further highlights that rather than suffering from a tension between arts and commerce, young (performing) musicians experience a tension between the expectation of the outside world that they need to be exceptional as …

Sustainable Assessment: A Proposed Model-Based Frame Of Reference To Actualize Sustainable Assessment Via Feedback And Technology Enhancement, Abd-Al-Hameed Mustafa Mahmoud Jabsheh, Jaafar Wasfi Abu Saa Jwa

Journal of the Association of Arab Universities for Research in Higher Education مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للبحوث في التعليم العالي

This article aimed to carefully examine the available relevant literature, through a survey, to explore the theoretical basis of sustainable assessment, as a newly emerging concept dictated by the rapid trends and developments of the twenty-first century. The article also aims to propose a model-based framework for achieving sustainable assessment practices within traditional assessment practices. To achieve this dual objective, the researcher followed an analytical and developmental approach, based on most of the limited relevant literature available, to define the theoretical boundaries of sustainable assessment as a concept and as a process. Furthermore, this analytical and developmental approach was formulated …

Reimagining Arts Education: Empowering Deaf Learners Through The Visual-Musical Innovation Of Gawang Angklung, Saprudin Saprudin, Yudi Sukmayadi, Julia Julia, Rita Milyartini

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya

This study examines the role of the Gawang Angklung (Galung) application, a visual-based digital tool integrating traditional angklung music with interactive visual cues, in supporting inclusive music education for deaf learners. Designed to bridge the gap between sound-based musical instruction and the learning needs of students with hearing impairments, Galung enables ensemble participation through synchronized visual signals. Using a convergent mixed-methods design, data were collected from 24 deaf students, four music educators, and two application developers through interviews, classroom observations, and questionnaires. Quantitative results showed significant improvements in rhythmic accuracy (p < .01) and tempo recognition, while qualitative analysis revealed increased motivation, collaborative engagement, and communicative confidence. The integration of Galung aligns with constructivist and aesthetic …

Visual Narrative Through The Wimba Approach In Tahilalats Comic With Campaign Theme Bersama Stop Judi Online, Rangga Pangkuluhur Gumelar, Basnendar Herry Prilosadoso

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya

Comics, as a medium for conveying ideas and concepts through imagery, integrate textual and visual elements to construct meaning and communicate messages effectively. Their distinctive visual communication enables the delivery of complex social issues in an accessible manner through characters, panels, layouts, and visual representations of sound and dialogue. This study analyzes the Tahilalats comic (2024 edition), which incorporates the hashtag #bersamastopjudol as part of a visual campaign against online gambling addiction. The narrative is presented entirely through images without verbal language. The research applies Primadi Tabrani’s Wimba theory to decode visual language and Roland Barthes’ semiotics to interpret symbolic …

In Tensile // In Between, Corinna Di Niro Aug 2025

In Tensile // In Between, Corinna Di Niro

Staff Scholarship - Australia & Dubai

"In Tensile // In Between" operates as both artistic artefact and theoretical critique, demonstrating how creative practice can embody and extend academic discourse. This creative-critical work examines shifting perceptions of course delivery within creative tertiary education, arguing that project-based learning enables the seamless embedding of socio-cultural discourse and theories within practical making processes.

The poem interrogates how educational environments can cultivate critical thinking through what I term "tensile pedagogy"—an approach that maintains productive charge between opposing forces rather than seeking synthesis or resolution. This concept builds upon King's (2017) work on pedagogy as tension, which argues that "tension and incompleteness …

“Me Dancing”: An Intrinsic Case Study Of Primary School Boys’ Understandings Of Movement And Dance Through Their Drawings, Rosemary G. Bennett Ms, Jane Southcott

The Qualitative Report

In this research we explore the place of creative embodiment through movement and dance from the understandings of a group of 8-10-year-old elementary school boys. Children can be asked to speak or write about their movement experiences, but for younger cohorts it may easier for them to reveal their ideas via their own drawings. In this qualitative study using drawings as a research method, two classes (a total of 31) of Year 3-4 boys in a suburban elementary school in Melbourne, Australia were asked to produce a drawing of “me dancing” in an empty frame. Each child was then asked …
