Examining Environmental Advertising Imagery Through Art Education, Tom Anderson

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

This is an examination of advertising imagery in the United States, with particular emphasis on outdoor advertising, and a proposal for an art curriculum focused on advertising awareness. The method is socially-oriented art criticism funded by some history of advertising and the psychology and philosophy of persuasive, manipulative, and pecuniary symbolism. The intent is first to decode the aesthetic environment (Barbosa, 1988) and then present a structure that helps art students to do the same. The work of Sandra Rowe cannot be understood within the specific concerns of social/political discourse alone. Indeed, her subject matter suggests a deeper, more complex polemic. Rowe is interested in the postmodern controversy surrounding the nature of the subject, i.e., she is not only questioning the centralized and linear notion of subject as constructed by modernist discourse, but in fact positing an abstract notion of the subject, a theory of "lack" or "absence'" that stands as the privileged object of her investigation. Most people believe that taste in art is highly individual, that one person’s opinion is as good as another. However, the literature on art and art education usually reflects the assumptions and values of the established authorities –art critics, historians, and aesthetic philosophers. It is assumed that, "With varying degrees of success, schools and colleges pass on a set of cultural values which reflect the dominant culture of society ... '" Jones, p. 135). Drawing is a fundamental skill for the creation of art. This investigation set out to discover whether or not the application of verbalization to an efficient drawing strategy increased students' perceptual observation skills to enhance representational drawing ability. The study group consisted of 20 Year 8 art students from a northern suburbs coastal secondary school in Perth. Their ages ranged from 12 to 14 years. They were randomly divided into two groups, experimental and control. The pretest and posttest drawings of the students from both groups were analyzed by four expert judges using an evaluation guide to determine the accuracy …

This study identifies, explains, and develops a practical model of teaching art criticism within a traditional secondary art curriculum. The approach to teaching art criticism uses the discipline-based art education format described in the Getty publication of 1985, a composite art critical format including B. Bloom, E. Feldman, K. Hamblen, and E. Kaelin, is accomplished through a process model curriculum developed by L. Stenhouse, and uses K. Gentle's curriculum design as the basis of the Curriculum Model Diagram.

People experiencing disabilities are no longer content to be treated as victims, objects of pity, and passive recipients of charitable impulses. They are aggressively and actively brining discriminatory policies and environments to the public’s attention. This activity is based on newer definitions of disability that do not associate disabilities with individuals, but with policies and environments that fail individuals. The foundations upon which knowledge is organized and presented in both discipline-based and cultural literacy approaches to art education are addressed. It is argued that the foundations for these two approaches are a result of conflicting views on the standardization of curricula and the perceived need for achievement oriented evaluation; these in turn are reflective of a fundamental difference in beliefs and assumptions as to the nature of education.

The importance of differentiating between a discipline-based approach to art education and the prescribed DBAE curricular structure and goals presented by the Getty Center for Education in the Arts is developed. It is proposed that the Getty’s reliance on the characteristics of contemporary general education for the theoretical foundations of DBAE is restrictive and contributes to technocratic rationalism in art education, and disallows the development of cultural literacy.
