Inclusion and mainstreaming have left many art teachers unprepared. They have not been trained as adaptive art teachers. There are basic fears among many on how to teach art to special education children. Some art teachers decline a school assignment after finding out they would have an adaptive class with cognitively disabled (CD) or hearing impaired (HI) students. Oftentimes, special needs children are left behind because it takes more time and special training to help them participate in art. During the past twenty-five years there have been numerous highly charged and open criticisms levied against the field of art history. These accusations have been launched from a variety of fronts, both within and outside the discipline of art history (Simmons, 1990), with some of these critical questions and subsequent condemnation directed toward textbooks used to teach this subject in traditional courses that survey historical aspects of Western art. Anxiously awaiting the responses to the theme for this year's journal-"social action through art"-I envisioned manuscripts from artists, educators, and scholars who were "making it happen." In readying three of the manuscripts for publication, I discovered that what 1 thought was a seductive "call for physical action" was interpreted in a much broader sense. The authors' expansion of the theme coupled with the complexity of issues presented make JSTAE 15/16 an exceptional issue.

The continual "cultural wars" between "Generation X" ("baby busters" whose birth years begin with 1961, aged 11-35), and New Right "baby boomers" (whose birth years range. From 1946 to 1960), around the issue of violence as represented in the popular cultural forms of film and television provide critically concerned art educators with an opportune moment to examine how conservative rhetoric has made "moral panic" an object of current discourses. This highly-charged debate, now literally and symbolically represented by the censorship that "V-chip" technology provides, is explored in this essay from a seemingly non-populist position given the current tide against the …

Art Education And Technology: These Are The Days Of Miracles And Wonder, Paul Duncum

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

This paper examines the impact on human consciousness of the exponential proliferation of electronic images, and offers suggestions concerning how educators should respond. A postmodern critique includes the ideas of an inverted Kantian aesthetics which embraces the everyday, a dramatic compression of space and time, and personal disorientation. A further critique grounds these views of consciousness in new economic arrangements and the rapaciousness of capitalism. I argue that the only viable educational response to this new consciousness is a critical examination of mass media imagery. Basic components of media education in schools are signposts of an appropriate response.

Women's activity in the visual arts both in and outside of the art institutions of Europe and the United States reveals a history of collaboration in artistic production and political activism This paper analyzes the effects of feminist collaboration upon the disciplines of art, the pedagogy of art, and the administration of art institutions. As a result of ignorance and misconceptions about the nature of computer artwork, the computer artist is misunderstood by practitioners in fine art, art education, science, and industry. This paper enters the world of the computer artist to look at some of the factors which contribute to misperceptions. It examines social issues ranging from the design and use of hardware and software to access issues, and problems with concrete and electronic exhibition venues. It also describes communication barriers in education and the media.

Approximately two years ago, after viewing a slide of Rubens’ The Rape of the Daughters of Leucippus, a group of students enrolled in an “art for elementary education majors” course were asked to write an interpretation of this work, as part of a series of art criticism activities that they had engaged in through the semester. Most of the students wrote what might be described as reasonable interpretations in that they discussed the work in formal terms and made judgments about the artwork. Using mythic criticism, this paper examines the current cultural and religious in stability that may serve as the impetus for the appropriation of ancient religious myths and symbols by various visual and performance artists. The paper concludes with implications of ritual, personal mythology, and controversial art for art education.

Perhaps because of the somewhat inchoate and seemingly disorganized nature of the world of the arts, most students of modern social history and professions have steered clear of engagement with this fascinating crowd. Yet further acquaintance with the subject reveals that artists did in fact attempt to professionalize, and -- even if their efforts were not as successful as those of some others -- these efforts left a clear record of articulated demands and statements.

The purpose of this study was to examine the interactions between the aesthetic criteria for evaluating art and learning styles between cultures. The problems were to investigate differences among learning styles and aesthetic preferences for painting styles between Black and Euro-American students.

Fifty-five undergraduates of Black-American and Euro-American descent from a state college in rural southern New Jersey participated in the study. The Group Embedded Figures Test was administered to determine the learning styles of field-sensitive or field-independence for each student. Students were instructed to find and trace the given simple figure within the given complex figure. Section one consisted …
