They immediately push all the desks to the side or back walls, leaving a large open space. Then each carries a chair toward the front of the room, creating a circle. Someone closes the door, and they begin to talk with one another. This article traces the progress of a social theory-based university art education program in which undergraduate majors teach art to incarcerated youth. It addresses and goes beyond the editor's question, "What imagery lies 'outside' art educators' accepted sphere?" Not only is the imagery of these populations out of sight, but so are the sites of incarceration themselves, they exist not only outside the purview of the art education field, but of nearly every sector of society except the police. The political nature of making personal and cultural meaning of objects (both ordinary and aesthetic) is the site where transactions between our innate need for order and environmental influences, such as consumerism, are made. Valuing objects leads to the phenomena of collection, a subject that has been of interest in education and psychology since the nineteenth century. I ask how the private collections of children, and later adults, lead to systems of labeling, grouping, and display of art and artifacts in the art and natural history museum. This study argues that drawing upon off-site/ sight/ cite points of reference affords a space for extended trajectories of learning and the cultivation of rich and atypical personal meaning unavailable within the terrain and climes of typical schooling frameworks. This paper continues the author's effort to establish the efficacy of a poststructural and poetic aesthetic in qualitative research writing.

"Precinct" was a site-specific art project/ performance/ exhibit put on by SITE: Buffalo Artist Collective, an organization devoted to a nontraditional approach to art emphasizing the experiential and the value of spectered memories contained in found objects and images. With the aid of the Buffalo Arts Commission, the abandoned police precinct (now destroyed) on Niagara Street on Buffalo's West side was open to the public, occupied and interacted with for a one-day event. Art Education And Disability: Re-Envisioning Educational Efficiency, Michelle Kraft

The value of efficiency has long been an ideal of educational policy in the United States (Guthrie, 1980). Where the education-and especially the art education-of students who are experiencing disabilities is concerned, traditional notions of efficiency (which are primarily rooted in economic standards of measure) may prove inflexible and inadequate in assessing educational outcomes. Guthrie (1980) equates efficiency in the schools with productivity. He explains that a number of factors may affect productivity, including availability of resources and students' environment and social background; likewise, students' varying (dis)abilities can be added to these factors. Reading images psychoanalytically from a Lacanian perspective has its challenges. The first task of this essay is to provide a way through what is often taken to be difficult and impenetrable theory, to explicate how the homology site/ sight/ cite can be understood in any act of critical perception. Its second task is to make distinctions between a psychoanalytic understanding of the subject as being 'split' or divided (as represented by the matheme '$,' Lacan's symbol for this form of subjectivity) when applied to art, as opposed to a naive realist subject of representation or a savvy poststructuralist (decentered) subject …

A study was conducted of Introductory Art students to find if the six traits of writing as written by Spandel/Stiggins (1997) would have influence over a narrative painting when combined with the six traits of painting. Inconclusive findings were reported. Data difference between the treated and untreated class was less than one point. More research needs to be conducted to study transfer of knowledge from verbal to visual as well as from one curriculum to another with both curriculums teaching same material.

Author's abstract: This qualitative study examined imagination in secondary art textbooks, both historically and in the current educational climate. An arts-based inquiry, as described by Barone & Eisner (Jaeger, 1988), investigated how imagination is manifested in some art books, how the standards movement has tended to limit imagination in art textbooks, and how art textbooks could expand students' imaginations. Using a framework based on the theories of Dewey (1934/1980), Greene (2001), and Eisner (2002), four art textbooks were analyzed for their qualities which expand students' imaginations. In this thesis, I identify and explore approaches to middle school art curricula that address the cultural expectations of gender in visual culture media. I use images from the Japanese comic Manga: Ranma1/2 to develop units of instruction with goals of engaging students in relating the study of art to their visual culture outside the classroom. The unit has three lessons that deal with cultural expectations of gender to help students become aware of understand gender differences in contemporary society. This thesis describes a pretest - posttest study to increase the effectiveness of art journals at the high school level. The targeted population consisted of students in the ninth through twelfth grades in a middle class community, located in central Virginia. The visual art students were involved in the journaling (art workbook, sketchbook) process as a part of their curriculum. Following a pretest students were surveyed and adjustments were made from their input to make the art journals more effective. The purpose of this investigation was to research vocabulary strategies that could help improve student art vocabulary retention. The subjects were five intact 3rd grade classes at a culturally diverse elementary school outside of Washington, DC. The vocabulary strategies, concept wheel and semantic mapping, were modified and incorporated into a string printmaking unit for two of the five classes. The remaining three classes were taught the same printmaking unit, with the exclusion of the modified vocabulary activities. The results of a labeling assessment given to each class on three separate occasions indicate that the incorporation of vocabulary activities does help …

I am writing this piece as a white self-identified gay male raised working class associate professor in art who is actively reconnecting with my past/roots, trying to better understand my sense of isolation in academe and my slowly seething anger directed at many of my academic colleagues. By working class I mean 2nd and 3rd generation Polish-American, devout Catholic, white privilege, contractor father, housewife mother, large family, in and out of poverty at times, racist with no real information. By academe I mean working for six years to achieve and be granted tenure at Texas Tech University in visual studies.
