Opportunities For Family Research In Marketing, Suraj Commuri, James W. Gentry Jan 2000

Opportunities For Family Research In Marketing, Suraj Commuri, James W. Gentry

Department of Marketing: Faculty Publications

Family as a consuming and decision making unit is a central phenomenon in marketing and consumer behavior. However, in the recent past, there has been a decline in interest in family as a unit of analysis. Yet, at the same time, the family -- as an institution -- is undergoing a metamorphosis and currently stands at the threshold of significant transformation. In this paper, we argue that the decreased interest in family as a unit of analysis in marketing is largely due to the fact that many interesting propositions about family as a consuming unit remain outside the current perspective …

Case Study : R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Malaysia, Kok Tee Lim

Student Works (2000-2009)

For this project assignment, I choose R.J. Reynolds Malaysia for my project because of a number of reasons. Firstly, there are only 3 main competitors exist in Malaysia such as Rothmans of Pall Mall, Malayan Tobacco Co and Philip Morris and the tobacco industries in Malaysia are highly regulated by government such as raising taxes, banning smoking in most public places and setting maximum limits for tar and nicotine in cigarettes can still provide competitive advantage. Furthermore, RJRM concentrates on exporting its products to Asia like Japan, Thailand, Brunei, Hong Kong and Duty Free Shops

Knowledge Management And Organization In Malaysia, Koji Shiota

Student Works (2000-2009)

The term 'Industrial society' has been a proper one to explain the wide and deep influence of the industrialization to the society and the wealth of the country in 20th century. Its related concepts and theories such as division of labour, specialization, standardization, mass-production, learning curb, scale economy and others explained well the corporate competitiveness especially from the viewpoint of 'efficiency' and '(financial) capital'. After 1960s some people began to describe the new paradigm such as Daniel Bell's 'Postindustrial society' and Albin Tofler's 'The third wave.' These three decades we have seen the shift from industrial economy to service economy …

Student Works (2000-2009)

The growing complexity and sophistication of the stock market had made stock broking a specialized profession. The era of globalization will pose a threat to securities industry in Malaysia. This had led to the development of psychographics research to more effectively communicate and market. By analyzing the characteristics of the individual investors, brokers in Malaysia will be in a better position to identify new opportunities. The …

Grocery Retailing In Malaysia : Improvements Through Ecr Application, Nikki Siew Hong Lee

Student Works (2000-2009)

The increasing population of sophisticated consumers is demanding for more quality, variety and service but for less money and time. This emerging pattern of consumers demanding more for less - is an issue facing the increasingly competitive grocery industry today. The increasing number and importance of large multi-national retailers in Asia during the last 5 years is further challenging the grocery business. Certainly, the ambience of the front store of a Tops or a Carrefour is as appealing as in shops anywhere. But peer into the back room, go round the yard, follow the delivery trucks and we are back …

Regulatory Reforms In The Malaysian Telecommunications Sector, Wai Ching Poon

The Malaysian telecommunications sector was privatized in 1987. A crucial ingredient in the success of the privatization of any telecommunications sector is the accompanying regulatory reforms. The main objective of this study is to examine the regulatory reforms that have taken place in the Malaysian telecommunications sector. Shifting the provision of telecommunications services operations away from the government makes it easier for the sector to achieve greater efficiency and possibly freedom from political intervention. This process can be further strengthened by innovative financing and investment strategies. In reality, firms are much better informed than the regulator. The key concept of …

Target Marketing Can Help Attract City Residents, Robert E. Lang, James W. Hughes, Karen A. Danielsen

Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Research

While suburban growth continues, city living is regaining popularity. It is common knowledge that urban neighborhoods often attract young, single professionals, but a more precise identification of potential city dwellers could help cities understand and develop their comparative advantages. Now, perhaps more than ever, cities need to know which people want to live in them and how their vision of urban life may be accommodated by public policy.

/="/">A common concern expressed among urban mayors is that the quality of their city services, especially schools, stacks up poorly against that of most suburbs. Improving public education is often cited …

When Chicago resident David Loundy ordered a compact disk on the Internet from a British Web site, he received an e-mail confirming his order. Loundy expected to pay the advertised price of £8.99, or about $14. When he was subsequently charged £12.99, Loundy was incensed. He argued that he had accepted the set price of £8.99 and insisted that he pay no more for the disk. But when Loundy filed suit in England under the Consumer Protection Act of 1987, he was told that the Act did not apply to him because, under English common law, the place of the …

Exploring The Criteria Used By Managers To Measure The Effectiveness Of Customer Loyalty Programs, Peter D. Simms

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Since the 1970s there has been a paradigm shift away from mass marketing towards the establishment and maintenance of individual relationships known as relationship marketing. Customer loyalty programs can be seen as the tactical strategies that have resulted from this change in focus, as they attempt to retain existing customers by developing a long-term, mutually satisfying relationship. The first of these such strategies was introduced in 1981, and they are still a relatively new and unexplored phenomenon. The limited research on these strategies conducted thus far has shown the many purported advantages to be doubtful at best, yet their number …

Determining The Critical Elements Of The Customer Intimacy Framework, Frank Raymond Jasper Jan 2000

Determining The Critical Elements Of The Customer Intimacy Framework, Frank Raymond Jasper

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Currently the field of marketing is undergoing a transformation concerning the appropriate marketing model to use in business. This transformation arose due to the mounting problems of the existing 4Ps Marketing Model, the heightened importance of customer retention, the requirement to continually add value to business processes and recent advancements in Internet technology. An alternate approach to the 4Ps Marketing Model began to emerge in the 1970's and was termed relationship marketing. This study is exploratory in nature and investigates consumer perceptions concerning customer intimacy. A self-administered mail questionnaire was employed to gather the necessary data from 300 solely external …

Attitudes Towards Female Sports Stars As Endorsers, Kevin R. James

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Successful and popular sports people have often been utilised as celebrity endorsers to encourage consumers to purchase goods and services. While male sports stars have a well-documented history as product endorsers, their female counterparts have been infrequently used, rarely studied and occasionally mismanaged. Using the dimensions that influence the credibility of a celebrity endorser, this study specifically examines consumer attitudes towards female sports stars as endorsers. Respondents intention to purchase was measured for three different products. As well, the attitude towards perceived attractive and non-attractive female sports stars was also explored. A three stage design, comprising of focus groups, specific …

An Empirical Analysis Of The Critical Determinants Affecting Commitment And Performance Of The U. S. Firm In The South African Market: Apartheid Versus Post-Apartheid, Sonja Pollard Mitchell

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

Recognized by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce as one of the world's Big Emerging Markets (BEMs), South Africa has received vast attention from potential foreign investors (IRRC 1994) and has been recognized by scholars as an excellent base for research (Hofmeyr, Templer and Beaty 1994). Unfortunately, little is known about the export behavior of the foreign firm in South Africa (Calof and Viviers 1995) given the country's history of political, social and economic instability.

This dissertation is an effort to increase the understanding of the factors that contribute to the commitment and overall market performance of U.S. firms in South …

Euroclicking And The Irish Sme: Prepared For E-Commerce And The Single Currency, Pierre Mcdonagh, Andrea Prothero Jan 2000

Euroclicking And The Irish Sme: Prepared For E-Commerce And The Single Currency, Pierre Mcdonagh, Andrea Prothero

Articles

There is much technological hype (see Gates, 1999) as to the consequences of operating within cyberspace (Gibson, 1994) in an e-commerce capacity, at a time of operationalising European economic union within "Euroland". Debates centre on the need to theorise cyberspace (Besser, 1995) and the individualisation offered from organisations in serving e-customers, both from business to business to consumer perspectives. There is however, limited investigation as to how small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) are preparing for this electronic or euro transmogrification. This article seeks to redress this by providing insight into these issues and draws upon an empirical analysis of …

The Indian Passenger Car Market: Outlook For Maruti, Sooraj Bhat, Puneet Dhamija

IIMB Management Review

The Indian passenger car industry was, until the 80s, the domain of the Ambassador. In December 1983, the first car rolled out from Maruti's plant at Gurgaon, marking the beginning of a revolution in the Indian automobile industry. Today, Maruti boasts almost 80% of the market share by volume. But in the new liberalised regime, with increasing competition including that of several world class players in the market, Maruti no longer commands a monopoly. Sooraj Bhat and Puneet Dhamija study the industry and Maruti's practices and conclude that unless they are able to change with the changing market and adhere …

Forming Strategic Alliances: Issues In Conceptualisation, Nagasimha Balakrishna Kanagal Dec 1999

Forming Strategic Alliances: Issues In Conceptualisation, Nagasimha Balakrishna Kanagal

IIMB Management Review

The interactive and interdependent economy of the present day is rooted in exchanges or 'give and take' of varying complexity. The process of conceptualising, planning and executing exchanges to the benefit of all players involved is basic to marketing. Given the three generic forms of economic organisation - market, hybrid and hierarchy, organisational expansions in high technology markets in recent times have witnessed the emergence of hybrid strategic alliances as an alternative to markets and hierarchies. Strategic alliances enable functional integration in inter-firm relationships involving tangible and intangible exchanges. Rapid technological innovations and technological complexity, and forces such as uncertainty, …

The Persistent Competitive Advantage Of Traditional Food Retailers In Asia: Wet Markets' Continued Dominance In Hong Kong, Arieh Goldman, Robert E. Krider, Seshan Ramaswami

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The focus of this article is the persistent continued strength of wet markets in Hong Kong and the weakness of supermarkets in the fresh food area. This phenomenon is surprising because, based on the experiences in North America and Western Europe and given the well-developed economy of Hong Kong, one would have expected supermarkets to dominate fresh food retailing and wet markets to be in retreat. In this article, the authors explain the reasons for the continued dominance of wet markets. They argue that consumers’shopping and consumption culture, the effectiveness of wet markets in handling consumers’needs, and the appropriateness of …
