The Indian Passenger Car Market: Outlook For Maruti, Sooraj Bhat, Puneet Dhamija Dec 1999

The Indian Passenger Car Market: Outlook For Maruti, Sooraj Bhat, Puneet Dhamija

IIMB Management Review

The Indian passenger car industry was, until the 80s, the domain of the Ambassador. In December 1983, the first car rolled out from Maruti's plant at Gurgaon, marking the beginning of a revolution in the Indian automobile industry. Today, Maruti boasts almost 80% of the market share by volume. But in the new liberalised regime, with increasing competition including that of several world class players in the market, Maruti no longer commands a monopoly. Sooraj Bhat and Puneet Dhamija study the industry and Maruti's practices and conclude that unless they are able to change with the changing market and adhere …

Forming Strategic Alliances: Issues In Conceptualisation, Nagasimha Balakrishna Kanagal Dec 1999

Forming Strategic Alliances: Issues In Conceptualisation, Nagasimha Balakrishna Kanagal

IIMB Management Review

The interactive and interdependent economy of the present day is rooted in exchanges or 'give and take' of varying complexity. The process of conceptualising, planning and executing exchanges to the benefit of all players involved is basic to marketing. Given the three generic forms of economic organisation - market, hybrid and hierarchy, organisational expansions in high technology markets in recent times have witnessed the emergence of hybrid strategic alliances as an alternative to markets and hierarchies. Strategic alliances enable functional integration in inter-firm relationships involving tangible and intangible exchanges. Rapid technological innovations and technological complexity, and forces such as uncertainty, …

The Persistent Competitive Advantage Of Traditional Food Retailers In Asia: Wet Markets' Continued Dominance In Hong Kong, Arieh Goldman, Robert E. Krider, Seshan Ramaswami Dec 1999

The Persistent Competitive Advantage Of Traditional Food Retailers In Asia: Wet Markets' Continued Dominance In Hong Kong, Arieh Goldman, Robert E. Krider, Seshan Ramaswami

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The focus of this article is the persistent continued strength of wet markets in Hong Kong and the weakness of supermarkets in the fresh food area. This phenomenon is surprising because, based on the experiences in North America and Western Europe and given the well-developed economy of Hong Kong, one would have expected supermarkets to dominate fresh food retailing and wet markets to be in retreat. In this article, the authors explain the reasons for the continued dominance of wet markets. They argue that consumers’shopping and consumption culture, the effectiveness of wet markets in handling consumers’needs, and the appropriateness of …

Sports Marketing Ethics In Today's Marketplace, Gene R. Laczniak, Richard H. Burton, Patrick Murphy

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

Sports marketing is a fast-growing business endeavor. However, certain aspects of it have drawn criticisms from several corners (e.g., media, government, coaches, and fans). This paper raises a number of ethical questions about various dimensions of sports marketing. Advice for addressing some of the ethical problems that occur is provided. The paper specifically asks if organizations using professional sports associations as a promotional lever for increasing sales can be hurt by a lack of ethics on the part of the leagues, teams, or players. It also implies that sport organizations, regardless of economic benefits derived or strong player unions, have …

Marketing, Business Processes, And Shareholder Value: An Organizationally Embedded View Of Marketing Activities And The Discipline Of Marketing, Rajendra Kumar Srivastava, Tasadduq A. Shervani, Liam Fahey Oct 1999

Marketing, Business Processes, And Shareholder Value: An Organizationally Embedded View Of Marketing Activities And The Discipline Of Marketing, Rajendra Kumar Srivastava, Tasadduq A. Shervani, Liam Fahey

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The authors develop a framework for understanding the integration of marketing with business processes and shareholder value. The framework redefines marketing phenomena as embedded in three core business processes that generate value for customers-product development management, supply chain management, and customer relationship management-which in turn creates shareholder value. Such a conceptualization of marketing has the potential to introduce dramatic shifts in the scope, content, and influence of marketing in the organization. The authors highlight the implications of an organizationally embedded view of marketing for the future of marketing theory and practice.

Managing Change Towards Service Excellence: Sds A Case Study, Jean Gorman Aug 1999

Managing Change Towards Service Excellence: Sds A Case Study, Jean Gorman

Masters

In a business environment where change is the only constant, companies must direct their attention to activities that will make their offerings excellent. The attainment of service excellence is a very prominent theme in the literature on services marketing. However, while the benefits of programs to achieve this status are unquestionable, there are in fact very few service companies that are regarded as excellent in the market place. Therefore the main objective is to determine how a company manages the activities towards achieving service excellence. The foundations of the primary research lie in both the literature on change management and …

Moderating Effects Of Vertical Exchange Relationship On The Relationship Between Firm Market Orientation And Selected Salesperson Role Variables, Patrick Dwain Fountain

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the moderating effects of identified dimensions of vertical exchange relationship (VER) between firm market orientation and the salesperson role variables of job satisfaction, organizational commitment, role ambiguity and role conflict. The sample utilized in this dissertation is the salesforce of a major United States publishing company. Moderated regression analysis is used to determine moderating effects. Managing Bank Service Quality: A Conceptual Model, Govender Krishna K Jun 1999

Managing Bank Service Quality: A Conceptual Model, Govender Krishna K

IIMB Management Review

The search for role models expresses not only the deep rooted desire to follow, but also the inherent desire to lead. The need for great heroes and transforming leaders like Gandhi and Mandela is felt much more strongly in the contemporary world. The model of leadership in existing literature has been used primarily to depict the process of managing rather than the process of transforming and leading. Asha Bhandarkar and Pritam Singh arrive at blueprints for leadership by studying the lives and work of transformational leaders.

Is There A Life Cycle For Foreign Bank Advertising Themes?, William Renforth Jun 1999

Is There A Life Cycle For Foreign Bank Advertising Themes?, William Renforth

IIMB Management Review

Advertisements by foreign banks in the US were examined to determine the services advertised, promotional themes used and the degree of internationalization of the strategy depicted. The results indicated an emphasis on general institutional characteristics rather than a focus on specific services, and a tendency to emphasize the size of assets, internationality, experience and competitiveness. The study suggested an advertising life cycle whereby foreign banks became more competitive and globally oriented in their strategies as they gained experience and became more active in their host economy.

Improving Supply Chain Performance Through Postponement Strategy, Janat Shah, Balram Avittathur Jun 1999

Improving Supply Chain Performance Through Postponement Strategy, Janat Shah, Balram Avittathur

IIMB Management Review

Managing high product variety and high demand uncertainty, while keeping operational and inventory costs under control and maintaining high customer service levels, is the supply chain challenge for many firms. An important and recent development in supply chain management is the concept of postponement strategy. Postponement delays an operational process to a later point in the supply chain, thereby delaying the point of product differentiation. Among other benefits, postponement strategy helps in reducing inventory levels, transport and operation lead times and transport costs, and facilitates responsiveness to customer demand. Demonstrating the concept through a number of case studies, Janat Shah …
