When Do Rewards Have Enhancement Effects? An Availability Valence Approach, Brian C. Tietje Jan 2002

When Do Rewards Have Enhancement Effects? An Availability Valence Approach, Brian C. Tietje

Marketing

It is commonly argued that although rewards induce behaviors, they undermine attitudes and motivation for subsequent action. This perspective has been applied in a consumer setting to suggest that sales promotions such as coupons will undermine consumer brand evaluations and brand loyalty. Instead of focusing on the undermining effects of promotional rewards, this research applies the availability valence hypothesis (Tybout, Sternthal, & Calder, 1983) to predict and explain when rewards will enhance recipient response. Two experiments demonstrate that an immediate reward from a product-related source enhances product evaluations by making favorable information more accessible than unfavorable information. Promotions enhance the …

Support For Computer Users: Concept Development And Measurement, Mary Helen Fagan, Barbara Ross Wooldridge, Stern Neill

Marketing

This study explores how support for computer users can be conceptualized and measured in information systems research. A number of studies have proposed that support for computer users plays an important role in the acceptance and utilization of information technology applications. In these studies, the support concept has been conceptualized in a variety of ways, and the findings have often not been as hypothesized. The paper provides a conceptual framework for understanding support for computer users, and then describes the development of an instrument to measure support for computer users in a business school lab environment. The paper should help …

For A Good Cause : The Effects Of Cause Important, Cause Proximity, Congruency And Participation Effort On Consumers' Evaluation Of Cause Related Marketing, Stacy Landreth

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In the past several years, companies have discovered the importance of strategic social alliances, particularly in the form of cause related marketing (CRM) programs. Varadarajan and Menon (1988) describe the key feature of CRM as is that the firm’s contribution is linked to consumers’ engagement in revenue producing transactions with the firm. It is essentially a way for a firm to “do well by doing good” and provides several benefits to both the firm and the non-profit organizations receiving the donations. In general, academic researchers have found favorable consumer attitudes toward the firm, products and the non-profit organization involved. Consumers …

Deception In Advertising: A Content Analysis Of The Legal Parameters Of Deception, E. Carla Mitchell Jan 2002

Deception In Advertising: A Content Analysis Of The Legal Parameters Of Deception, E. Carla Mitchell

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

One of the primary attributes of a free market economy is the uninhibited flow of truthful information regarding the goods and services available in the marketplace (Azcuenaga 1995). This free flow of information, in the form of advertising, enhances market performance by informing consumers and enabling firms to compete equitably based on the attributes of their offerings. Studies reveal that, for the vast majority of marketing managers, the regulatory environment serves as the primary influence in advertising strategy development and decision-making (Davis 1994). However, in their theory development, behavioral researchers often ignore the legal aspects promulgated by the FTC. Furthermore, …

The Established And Potential Mediating Variables In The Child's Understanding Of Advertising Intent: Towards A Research Agenda, Margaret-Anne Lawlor, Andrea Prothero

Articles

This paper aims to explore in detail the issue of advertising intent, with particular reference to the child. The literature review examines the importance of age, and cognitive and social development in this field, and considers whether or not children can distinguish between television programming and advertising. What the literature review illustrates is that research studies thus far have conflicting viewpoints on these areas. Within the research to date, there are also a number of important issues which do not seem to be addressed. Most notably, there is little research which considers the impact of advertising upon children, from the …

Integrating The Activities Required To Recruit And Retain Profitable Customers In Contemporary Retail Banking, Susan Walsh Jan 2002

Integrating The Activities Required To Recruit And Retain Profitable Customers In Contemporary Retail Banking, Susan Walsh

Articles

Today’s high street retail bank faces a major challenge in integrating the marketing activities required both to recruit new customers and to retain existing profitable ones. The challenge involves a judicious mix of “transaction marketing” – mainly aimed at winning new clients – and of “relationship marketing”- largely aimed at retaining present ones. Evidence from a detailed qualitative study of marketing practice in a UK high street bank, a subsidiary of an Irish headquartered bank, demonstrates just how problematic achieving this balance can be. The date indicates that this bank underinvested in a number of activities that are of primary …

The Influence Of Firm Dispositions On Interfirm Relationship Formation In Business Markets, Jean L. Johnson, Ravipreet S. Sohi

Department of Marketing: Faculty Publications

The central premise of this paper is that firm level characteristics or behavioral traits, referred to as predispositions, influence how the firm behaves and interacts in its interfirm relationships (EFRs). This augments traditional approaches that focus on the intra-relationship perspective and/or on environmental influences on the relationship. Firm predispositions of strategic intent and relational proclivity are expected to individually, and in combination, increase the extent of connectedness between partners in interfirm relationships. In turn, through connectedness, they affect relationship effectiveness in terms of reciprocity, information exchange, and cooperation. Results indicated that the predispositions increased connectedness, but combinational effects were not …

Successful Branding By Pran K Choudhury, Universities Press, 2000., Vijay G Vancheswar

IIMB Management Review

Successful Branding is a good amalgam of real-life Indian case studies which highlight the role of branding in successful marketing. While most of the cases revolve around fast moving consumer brands, given the sensitivity of this category to market perceptions, houdhury does provide interesting cases of brand creation in low interest category commodity products such as cement(Ambuja Cement) and intermediate products such as denim (Arvind Mills).

Scripted Thought: Processing Korean Hancha And Hangul In A Multimedia Context, Nader T. Tavassoli, Jin K. Han

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We compare the cognitive processing of words written in alphabetic scripts with the cognitive processing of words written in logographic scripts. We suggest that the processing of words written in alphabetic scripts relies more heavily on the storage of--and the serial rehearsal properties of--short-term memory's phonological loop. In contrast, the processing of words written in logographic scripts relies more on the storage of--and the spatial-relational rehearsal properties of--visual short-term memory. A series of three experiments investigates implications of these processing differences within a single language, Korean, where words can be written in the alphabetic Hangul or in the logographic Han-cha. …

Editor's Statement, J. Craig Andrews Oct 2001

Editor's Statement, J. Craig Andrews

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

It has been almost nine years since I concluded my term as the fifth editor of Journal of Public Policy & Marketing (JPP&M). As indicated in my outgoing “Editor’s Statement” (2001), I consider it a tremendous honor to have served as editor for a journal that has evolved into one of the leading outlets for scholarly work in the marketing field. However, as most former editors will acknowledge, it can be best described as an ever-changing journey, with peaks and valleys in the evolution process. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to reflect on my tenure and background, my …
