Seussical is a compilation of many of Dr. Seuss' beloved story books. The Cat in the Hat serves as the emcee for the evening, taking the audience through the stories of Horton Hears a Who, The Better Butter Battle Book, The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, Oh! The Places You'll Go, and many others. All of these stories are given an intertwining story line, with Horton serving as the protagonist. Horton has to overcome two main obstacles in the play; first, he needs to save the planet of Who, and secondly, he needs to save the egg abandoned by Mayzie LaBird. …

Choreographing The Other: The Serbian State Folk Dance Ensemble, Gypsies, Muslims And Albanians, Anthony Shay
Choreographing The Other: The Serbian State Folk Dance Ensemble, Gypsies, Muslims And Albanians, Anthony Shay
Pomona Faculty Publications and Research
I argue that the power to represent is not only power in a theoretical Foucauldian sense, but the power of representation, especially of those powerless to resist the field of representation provided by state-supported national dance ensembles, is a very real power. Dance scholars have begun to look at issues of representation and dance and human rights within fascist and communist contexts of the past, as well as questioning the stances toward dance taken by theocratic regimes like that of the Islamic Republic and Iran and the former Taliban regime of Afghanistan. I also suggest that the actual content of …
Dance And Human Rights In The Middle East, North Africa, And Central Asia, Anthony Shay
Dance And Human Rights In The Middle East, North Africa, And Central Asia, Anthony Shay
Pomona Faculty Publications and Research
In this essay, Islam itself is first examined in order to determine how individual Muslims justify to themselves and to others the banning of dancing in various contexts. Following a brief discussion of Islam as it relates to dance, some of the myriad dance genres and contexts found in the Middle East, North Africa, and Central Asia are discussed. Finally, I consider the many ways in which many Muslims perceive dance, and then describe and analyze the local reactions to dancing in its complexity. This approach elucidates multiple meanings that create a pattern of behavior within specific cultural contexts.

Bells Of Change: Kathak Dance, Women And Modernity In India, Pallabi Chakravorty
Bells Of Change: Kathak Dance, Women And Modernity In India, Pallabi Chakravorty
Dance Faculty Works
The first critical study of Kathak dance within the discourses of the modern and the global, tracing the arc of two centuries of Kathak: the colonial nautch dance, classical Kathak under nationalism and postcolonialism and 'innovation' and 'new directions' under transnationalism and globalization. It blends various approaches from anthropology, ethnomusicology, and performance, media and gender studies to map the journey of Kathak from baijis and tawaifs to the global stage. The book uses dance as a lens to explore the interaction between the actors and forces of cultural change from power and patronage to television and film.
Unruly Difference: The Politics Of Stigma And The Space Of The Sacred, Ellen Kaplan
Unruly Difference: The Politics Of Stigma And The Space Of The Sacred, Ellen Kaplan
Theatre: Faculty Publications
This essay looks at three contemporary Jewish American playwrights: Tony Kushner, Martin Sherman and Deb Margolin, whose plays ask fundamental questions about Jewish identity in its political, cultural and spiritual dimensions. Breaking from the concerns of their theatrical predecessors, most of whom ignored or disguised their Jewish roots, these playwrights draw on profoundly Jewish concepts to reconfigure narratives of redemption, obligation, ethical community, and Messianic utopianism. Their plays are characterized by a sensibility of “unruly difference.” Attracted by the politics of marginality; these writers re-imagine otherness in plays that celebrate a different understanding of faith and conjure the sublime.
