An Icosahedron For Two: A Many-Sided Look At Making A Duet, Colleen T. Wahl

The space around our bodies is not empty or neutral. In fact, the space around our bodies is loaded with meaning and important. When we move through it, whether it be in our daily lives or a choreographer making specific choices in order to convey a message, we activate new understandings in our lives. As a dancer and choreographer, I created a duet from improvisational climbs on an icosahedron. This article discusses choreographing from the form icosahedron and connects Laban's theories of space harmony with the activation of meaning in my life.

My experience as a dance maker is rooted in the following: use of space, interpersonal relationships, efforts in dynamics, psychology, and personal memory, all of which inform my thesis project. This thesis project specifically investigates the stages of psychosocial development as seen through the theories of psychologist Erik Erikson. It explores the emotional effect of these psychosocial stages on people, including conflicts and positive impacts. I demonstrate how these developmental stages can define a person's identity and how audience members, choreographers, and artists from various fields might be influenced by them. Amaryllis & Belladonna are two new, modular, and interlocking projects by Brooklyn-based guitarist, composer, and MacArthur fellow Mary Halvorson. Amaryllis is a sextet that filters Halvorson’s compositional explorations of melody, harmony, and counterpoint through the lens of six master improvisers, arranged in a way that allows the music to unfold differently every time. Belladonna is a set of compositions written specifically for Halvorson on guitar plus The Mivos Quartet. Highlighting Halvorson’s compositional voice in a fresh context, the music is augmented by Halvorson’s guitar throughout, adding elements of chance and improvisation. Beatrice Crawford memorial concert: This concert is a free public performance supported by a generous grant from the Keating Crawford Foundation. Through the creation of set pieces, aerial dance, inventive apparatuses, a choir (Opus 8 from Toronto), and projection, In the Fire captures, re-interprets and shares important stories from Treddenick’s father, who is also the last living founder of the Winnipeg Firefighter Museum. During the performance, all are invited into a reflective space to witness the evolution of a father/daughter relationship, to stir a sense of hopefulness in their own lives, and “light the fire.”

Why are we speaking? To whom are we speaking? About whom are we speaking? How are we speaking? From what place are we speaking? A visceral work from a revolutionary company, assembling nine dancers in a frenzied, morphing mass. A constant flow of overflowing imagination that visualizes. Nine young dancers develop a series of images inspired by the daily lives of Black people in Brazil, creating poetry from these broken abandoned nothings.

A writer’s dream turns into a nightmare as Sergei Maxudov’s novel is finally going to be presented as a play at the renowned Independent Theater of Moscow, and the rehearsals reveal the hypocrisy and frustration of producing a truly artistic piece. A bitingly funny adaptation of Russian literary giant Bulgakov’s famous unfinished theatrical novel, Black Snow is a hilarious send-up of Stanislavsky’s famous “Method” and the acting profession in general.
