Art, Ritual, And Representation: An Exploration Of The Roles Of Tsam Dance In Contemporary Mongolian Culture, Mikaela Mroczynski

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Tsam, the sacred and complex Buddhist ritual dance, although only introduced to Mongolia in the 19th century, established itself as a significant ceremony before being halted by the purges and destruction the communist era. The 18 years of religious freedom that democracy has heralded have resulted in tsam’s successful reestablishment as a religious ritual in a growing number of monasteries across the country. Tsam has also taken its place as an icon of Mongolian culture for foreigners, a cornerstone of many performance groups’ representation of Mongolian cultural heritage. Theatre studies has been, over the course of the last decade, increasingly interested in the relationship between stage and space; that inter- est, however, has primarily been figured by marrying theories of human geography with studies of theatrical performance. “The Line, the Crack, and the Possibility of Architecture” asks what it might mean to explore the spaces of performance through the lens of another plastic art—the art of building—and investigates what the discourses of architecture theory, both classical and (post)modern, might have to say to those of us who study the vicissitudes …

Bernard Shaw's Arms And The Man, Richard Hinz Apr 2008

Bernard Shaw's Arms And The Man, Richard Hinz

Master of Theater Production Graduate Projects

Arms and the Man is one of Shaw's most beloved works. It's commentary on love, war and society is as applicable today as it was in the late nineteenth century. The comedy of the play is seen through the juxtaposition of character and the changes in attitude the main character and others goes through as the play progresses. Given the current conflict our country is involved in, audiences of today can readily relate to the ideas presented by Shaw on war and military action. Love is a theme that is universal and remains a timeless theme in all entertainment media …
