This thesis is the culmination of the scenic design for the play, The Skin of Our Teeth by Thornton Wilder, performed in the Howell Memorial Theatre during the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film’s 2014-2015 University Theatre season.

Virginia Smith directed The Skin of Our Teeth, leading a creative team comprised of both graduate and undergraduate students. This thesis contains the entire scenic design process including initial meetings, conceptualization, renderings, paperwork, the tech process, and production photographs.

ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830

Scholars have puzzled over the origin of the relationship between Charlotte Lennox and Thomas Birch. That the two shared a cordial professional relationship in 1759 is not surprising, but it is unclear how and when Birch obtained the poem "The Dream, an ode by Miss Ramsey of 15" (ca. 1744-45) for his manuscript collection. Possibly Edward Cave, publisher of The Gentleman’s Magazine, or other professional associates such as Samuel Johnson or Samuel Richardson supplied it. But archival evidence indicates that Lady Isabella Finch, Lennox’s earliest patroness, was in contact with Birch in 1749, raising the question of whether she …

This essay discusses how I incorporated readers theatre into a senior seminar on Jane Austen and her contemporaries. The article recounts how my students read Elizabeth Inchbald’s 1798 drama, Lovers’ Vows, and Austen’s 1814 novel, Mansfield Park, and then were inspired at the end of the seminar to take part in a readers theatre production of the play. Using Solo Drama To Make The Teaching Of Social Studies Engaging For Students, Michael Kemeh

Social studies is a major subject taught in schools in the United States. Research shows lack of interest in the subject by most school children. The author reflects on how he prepares teachers in a graduate drama course to use solo drama as another instructional option to address the problem. The paper also examines integrated solo drama projects by four students in their respective classrooms as case studies. The findings are synthesized to demonstrate the efficacy of this drama strategy for classroom teachers and teacher educators to adopt in making social studies meaningful and engaging for learners.

2014-2015 Discover the Heartbeat of Creative Life

Performance pioneer Robert Whitman is always at the vanguard of theater and art. With Swim, he creates an enchanting, thrillingly inventive new work that expands and heightens the theater experience by creating a rich environment of sound, movement, smells, and activities, in which the visual is only one part of the experience. According to Whitman, “an image, an object, a performer, or an action may not be seen, but it can be heard; it can be smelled; it can be perceived and felt; and in this shared experience the audience, sighted and blind, can be brought into a single community.”

Theatre Faculty Articles and Research

Narrative construction has an important and under-explored role to play in examining questions of power and privilege in P-12 classrooms or higher education courses in education and the humanities. In this paper, the authors utilize pedagogical deconstruction and reconstitution of stories about childhood play, examining how young people embody cultural narratives of power through their play. Through narrative construction, the authors envision utopian moments of resistant play, in which youth question old scenarios and imagine more equitable and examined possibilities for play. Journal of Undergraduate Research

The production of this documentary has been extensive, and in the process the project was renamed “Ghosts on the Mountain.” The film examines the isolated lifestyle of H-­‐2A guest workers in the American West by subtly exploring the emotions that come with their occupation. The film’s subjects leave family and native lands to work in the US on H-­‐2A work visas, or no visas at all. Surrounded by breathtaking vistas, these workers find themselves in solitude and loneliness. This isolation is heightened by language barriers and the remoteness of the sheep’s pasture lands. They become, in a sense, “ghosts” to …
