The problem is that web users are trying to accomplish specific tasks, and websites need to be tailored towards these users, not towards the designer. Technical communication audiences are increasingly international and intercultural. Some of these audiences may be vulnerable and suffering trauma following violations of their human rights and dignity. In such cases, technical documents can serve to reinforce the oppression experienced by these audiences. Technical communicators must adapt and create methods to communicate ethically and responsibly with these audiences through a social justice lens. This thesis utilizes adapted plain language guidelines from plainlanguage.gov combined with human-centered design (“HCD”) guiding principles to perform a qualitative document analysis of technical government forms. My discussion hinges on the groundwork of social justice as integral to the field of technical and professional communication (TPC) with an understanding of the importance of visual communication; ultimately, I seek to understand the intersections of Social Justice and Visual Communication within the field of Technical Communication. Based on this research, I develop a heuristic that allows technical communicators to critically analyze their visual communication efforts, specifically infographics, for advocacy/social justice.

We came together in Spring 2018 at a two-day think tank hosted by Duke University Libraries and supported by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, with dozens of other librarians, publishers, and scholarly communication stakeholders, to work on the question of sustainably publishing large digital projects. The outcome of that discussion turned into an extended project at TriangleSCI 2018 and culminated in the heuristic presented here.The heuristic can be used as a checklist to help authors (and their project team) assess their needs when it comes to making their digital projects findable, impactful, citable, usable, and sustainable (creating the acronym FICUS).

"In this study, I analyzed twenty-four statements of purpose (SPs) submitted to the Department of English and Technical Communication at Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T) by current and former students. My goal was to determine the applicants' shared understanding of the SP genre. I analyzed the SPs from three dimensions: rhetorical moves, rhetorical appeals (pisteis), and rhetorical style (elocutio).

Mental health sometimes evades academic discussions about creating an accessible environment for disabled students. However, this matter continues to influence student life. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, “75 percent of lifetime cases of mental health conditions begin by age 24.” Furthermore, within the same study, they assert that one in four students are diagnosed with mental illness (eleven percent with anxiety; ten percent with depression), and over eighty percent of students experience overwhelming stress because of myriad reasons. Ultimately, these findings reveal that, for many students, mental issues remain a focal point in their lives, and writing …

Purdue’s Professional Writing program has worked with the Lafayette Transitional Housing Center for people living with homelessness in recent years through a multimedia writing course. Through this partnership, students have the opportunity to create deliverables to help the center improve their digital media presence and public outreach.
