The world is in a perilous place. Challenged by zealots, autocrats, a pandemic, and now a war in Europe, elected officials and their constituents no longer exchange ideas in a functioning public sphere, once a hallmark of the humanistic tradition. The timeliness of the Universal Apostolic Preferences (UAPs), therefore, is profound as they provide beacons of light for dark times. In this article, I trace Isocratic philosophy through Ignatian pedagogy and contemporary civic engagement to argue that we can use these three models to help us Journey with Youth and Walk with the Excluded. Developing Students' Rhetorical And Genre Awareness In First-Year Writing Classrooms, Arta Sejdiu

While longitudinal research within the field of First-Year Writing (FYW) and rhetoric has contributed to the field’s understanding of transfer knowledge in FYW Classrooms, there has been less attention given to empirical research on prior knowledge and how we, as teachers, help students to become rhetorically aware. Both articles explore students' prior knowledge on rhetorical and genre awareness. The pilot studies were conducted in a First-Year Writing (FYW) classroom at James Madison University. By employing different teaching techniques and interventions, the author found out striking results on students' development on rhetorical and genre awareness.

The Great Resignation: A Content Analysis Of News Sources' Portrayals Of The Covid-19 Labor Shortage., Mackenzie Williams

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses

When workers left the labor market in large numbers during the COVID-19 pandemic, proclamations of a labor shortage emerged extensively throughout the news. In this study, I analyze the coverage of the worker shortage among three news sources with different political orientations. Several themes emerged from analyzing a total of 75 articles. The findings showed that the perspective shown in the article, the cause of the labor shortage, restaurant worker portrayal, support of solutions, and opinion of the labor shortage all differed based on the political identity of the news source.
