For the ADE meeting last October, I was asked to comment on the Hemingway Collection from the perspective of an archivist and a curator. The trouble is, the Hemingway Collection is, at this point, thoroughly uninteresting-archivally speaking. Basic concepts of archival theory such as provenance or original order, respect du fonds, apply either trivially (we know precisefly where these papers came from) or not at all (these papers never had an original order). In terms of archival practice, the Hemingway Collection at one time posed a genuine challenge, simply because it did lack any order. The first curator, Jo August …

Arthur Stanley Link, Director and Editor of the Papers of Woodrow Wilson Emeritus and George Henry Davis '08 Professor of American History Emeritus at Princeton University, died on March 26 at the Bermuda Village Health Center in Advance, North Carolina. The cause of death was lung cancer; he was seventy-seven years old. Link was one of the founders and the first president of the Association for Documentary Editing, 1979-80, and remained an enthusiastic supporter and adviser to subsequent officers of the ADE as well as to editors of the many projects which have developed under its aegis over the years.

It seems like only yesterday that the historical profession first encountered what is now considered the definitive history of the postbellum era in the United States~ The main reason for this temporal illusion, of course, is that scholars have offered little or no revision of the main story Foner offered in 1988. This thesis examines the areas that determine what characteristics produce an expert Web developer. The focus of the study is in the following three areas: creativity, construction of meaning, and problem solving.

To date, no other formal study of this type has been reported. We know much about the World Wide Web itself, but nothing about the people who create the Web sites.

This work examines the origins of our existing principles of communication to observe patterns of language and their causes. The study surveys twenty-five hundred-years of Western language and writing and its evolution through cultural interaction. The nature of this evolution is the topic of this thesis. There are four periods of time that are studied for their influence on language and writing: the Late Classical Period, the Early and Late Medieval Period, the Early Renaissance, and the Twentieth Century. The study revealed that language and writing have always had a significant metacognitive function within Western culture. Language and writing have …

In 1996, engineer and author Samuel Florman asked why engineering and technology had been represented only lightly in literature. From a mere handful of books dealing with this topic, he named The Control of Nature (1989), by John McPhee, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance (1974), by Robert Pirsig, and The Soul of a New Machine (1981), by Tracy Kidder, as being among the best examples of a literary expression of engineering. After filling more than forty volumes-nearly five thousand pages detailing her life from her fifteenth through her thirty-first years, Frances E. Willard suddenly stopped keeping a journal. On her thirty-first birthday, 28 September 1870, she wrote: "[M]y Journal has this day been shaken hands with in a long adieu, and I here record my purpose to write no more wishy-washy pages of personal reminiscence." This thesis analyzes three American housekeeping books—Lydia Maria Child's The American Frugal Housewife, Catherine Beecher and Harriet Beecher Stowe's The American Woman's Home, and Helen Campbell Stuart's The Easiest Way in Housekeeping and Cooking—as historical examples of technical writing. The study follows current recommendations for historical research in the field, namely, to analyze technical writing texts in consideration of their historical context. This involves determining what constituted technical writing in the nineteenth century; considering the publishing context of the study; and applying this definition to analyze three housekeeping books as technical manuals. A study of 574 students at the Air Force Institute of Technology compared performance, education, and experience factors (the later two as stated by the students themselves) to a locally developed estimate of true writing ability (WGPA). This exploratory research was additionally intended to assess the effectiveness of AFITs current writing student skill diagnostic and instructional system. Direct (essay evaluation) and indirect (objective test) evaluations of AFIT student writing ability were analyzed for their predictive impact. The present study examines the relationship between environmental communication theory and practice. The focus of the case study is to examine the formal elements of an environmental document--the Industrial Pollution Prevention Planning guidelines published by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP)--and the process by which this document was created. Group work creates concerns with respect to performance, collaboration, and conflict management. Writing technical proposals creates appropriate settings for gaining insight into work group efficiencies and project conflict. The research involved different work groups preparing responses to Federal Government solicitations. A proposed Process/Product model was applied to create a new framework and perception of the technical proposal development effort. There exists a rich dialectic between the forces of Process, (how the effort is accomplished), and, Product, (what the effort will produce.) The purpose of this research effort was to investigate the application of certain principles of effective communication to improve the comprehension, and ultimately the usability, of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). Principles from cohesion theory (an area of research describing effective design) were used to manipulate the design of select sections of two sample EISs. Each sample EIS was altered to manipulate the presence and/or absence of visual and linguistic cohesion. Subjects were required to read select versions from each section of the two sample EISs and answer four short answer questions. The dependent variables were accuracy in answering the …
