The preceding eight volumes covered Morris's career as the country's "Financier" -in fact the actual prime minister of the early Confederation-through his official diaries, letter books, and ancillary correspondence. Morris went into office with an ambitious agenda, and the earlier volumes amply chronicle his attempts to put his plans into effect. Believing that few citizens are disinterested patriots, Morris thought, as Hamilton did, that the best way to attach them to the new government was through self-interest. Politicians involved in the water and wastewater industry invoke core American values in their rhetoric to persuade their audience to support or decry privatization. By weaving these values into their rhetoric, politicians provide moral and social justification for their audiences to support them, whether in election or privatization.

Computer anxiety is the fear or avoidance of the computer and the environment it represents. The anxiety can manifest in all computer users regardless of their experience or complexity of the tasks they must complete. The anxiety can be alleviated on one task, but as technology changes and advances, the user's comfort level is compromised and the anxiety reappears. Understanding computer anxiety as it relates to computer user documentation is a compelling research question. Web-based Training (WBT) is still a relatively new technology, and the full extent of WBT functionality has yet to be realized. Most of corporate America recognizes the necessity of a well-trained workforce; however, instructor-led training is often difficult to implement due to a variety of logistical issues. These issue, include cost constraints, location issues, and limited resources.

Tumultuous and momentous events occurred in the United States between 1865 and 1873. Dominating the political arena was the end of the nation's bloody civil war and the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, followed by the struggle over Reconstruction and the impeachment of President Andrew Johnson. In the middle of this ferment stirred the impressive figure of Salmon P. Chase, who served as chief justice of the Supreme Court from 1864 to 1873.

One of the joys of documentary editing is the opportunity to watch stories unfold in the documents. Thus, it is not surprising to see academic and trade presses publishing works aimed at a popular audience that rely heavily on historical texts. In the past several decades, documentary editors have done a remarkable job in creating standards, although most of their energies have focused on scholarly editions. When Benjamin Franklin left Philadelphia for France in October 1776, he took along his sixteen-year-old grandson, William Temple Franklin, who would remain in Paris, serving as his secretary, for the entire eight-and-a-half-year mission. Also in tow was another grandson and Temple's cousin, Benjamin Franklin Bache. Benny, as he was usually called, was born in August 1769. No letters survive to indicate why Benny, who had just turned seven, was being sent abroad. Caroline Healey Dall(1822-1912), Boston born reformer, lecturer, author of books, freelance journalist, memoirist, and occasional preacher, began her apprenticeship as a writer at the age of nine with the keeping of a journal. While still a child, however, she destroyed her earliest journal when she discovered her father reading it. For some time thereafter, she ceased her journal keeping. But soon finding herself unable to quell the need to express herself on paper, she resumed the habit. The journals of this second period, which ran for several years, survived until Dall was in her seventies. Then she also destroyed them, …

Biological determinism is a field of scientific theory that attributes human behavior, relationships, and social structures predominantly to hereditary and biological rather than cultural and environmental influences. In almost twenty-five years of published essays, the Harvard evolutionary biologist, Stephen Jay Gould, has sounded an alarm that biological determinism-through its scientific rationalization of slavery, eugenic sterilization, Nazi atrocity, and more subtle forms of injustice perennially poses a real and dangerous threat to humanity. This thesis explores the career-long anti-hereditarian thread permeating Gould's published works on evolutionary history and the history of science. Translating Cyberculture : An Analysis Of American And Brazilian Cultural Differences Evidenced In The Translation Of A Popular Computer Text, Angela M. Ferrao

This thesis examines the translation of a popular American computer book and its translation into Brazilian Portuguese to determine whether current discourses on computers and technology are being literally translated or culturally adapted for their target audience. The selected text adopts a humorous approach to learning new software applications and replaces complicated technical explanations with culturally-bound examples that are inextricably tied to American attitudes toward technology.

An analysis of the translation reveals that the ideologies and social codes at work in the book threaten to impede the Brazilian reader's understanding due to the translator's failure to adapt the text for …

Reproductive Health

To raise public awareness of reproductive health (RH) issues, the Population Council’s Frontiers project and the Futures Group’s Policy project jointly organized four press briefings and provided background materials to key journalists from Arabic newspapers and magazines. From May 1999 to June 2000, project staff worked closely with 20 Egyptian journalists, including editors of women’s pages and senior editors. The press briefings covered youth, marriage patterns, contraceptive technology, and menopause. The press kit prepared for each briefing contained fact sheets, reference materials, a contact list of key experts, and an evaluation sheet. To assess RH reporting and track coverage resulting …

Committee of Correspondence one of the most exciting letters, not only in this two-volume edition of selected Alien Family correspondence, but arguably in the entire annals of American military and political history.
