Sparklines As Effective Graphics, George Francy

This research explores a method of graphical display called a sparkline. Sparklines are a valid method to convey statistical information, supported by an easy familiarity among users and a desire, expressed by information design expert Edward Tufte, for greater density in data display. The subject is examined in light of the broader concept of the integration of pictures and text, tracing this tradition back to medieval illuminated texts, through history to Galileo, and to such diverse modem techniques as emoticons. There was a kind of steamy delight on that day when I realized that the secret language in her love letters-the "m's", the "tb", and the "w" -were not the Yiddish words I imagined them to be, nor the clandestine political messages, but a playful way to dodge the Comstock law against sending obscenity through the mail. I started having second thoughts about giving a paper on the subject of working with classified documents almost as soon as I agreed to do it. In the first place, I'm not editing classified documents-or any kind of documents, for that matter-now. I used to, though: for over a quarter of a century I edited the papers of Dwight David Eisenhower at Johns Hopkins University. My duties there included handling all matters of classification and declassification, as well as physical, personnel, and information security.

Track and field throwing events (discus, javelin, hammer and shot put), originating in ancient Greece and pre-Medieval Ireland and Scotland, require complex physical interaction. An historical analysis of the features of traditional media which have been used as coaching tools in these events - books, video, audio, diagrams, photographs and hypertext - provides the foundation on which future multimedia tools can be developed.

In July 1995, I joined the faculty in the Special Collections Department of Bailey/Howe Library at the University of Vermont (UVM). I was expected to put the descriptions of their holdings online. I knew the little collections were easy (MARC records in the university's online catalog would do), but what about the longer inventories-some as long as 300 pages? That problem had me flummoxed. From Philadelphia to Lenawee County, Michigan Territory, Remember the Distance that Divides Us offers the correspondence of Elizabeth Margaret Chandler (1807-1834), her family and friends. Remember the Distance is the first publication of Chandler's writing since Benjamin Lundy published her essays and poems in 1836 shortly after her death. An active abolitionist and author, Chandler wrote for the Genius of Universal Emancipation, an early antislavery newspaper edited by Benjamin Lundy. In 1830 Elizabeth, her brother Thomas, and her aunt, Ruth Evans, moved to Michigan territory. The letters begin 12 February 1830, as the three prepare to migrate west. They continue …

Linda A. Fisher, MD, 58, former director of the Fairfax County Health Department, in Fairfax, VA died Monday, 23January 2006 at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD of complications following a heart transplant. A resident of Annandale, VA for the past five years, she had resided in St. Louis from 1975 until 2000.

Dr. Fisher was an active member of the ADE and a graduate of Camp Edit. She was a recipient of a travel grant and attended the 2003 ADE Annual Meeting in Chicago. Dr. Fisher had published two articles in Documentary Editing, an article about Missouri businessman Joseph …

In 1825, the community of Cornwall, Connecticut was in an uproar over the impending marriage of Harriett Gold, the daughter of one of its leading citizens, to Elias Boudinot, member of the Cherokee Indian Nation and former student of the town's assimilation-focused Foreign Mission School. The second white woman in the community to establish a relationship with a Foreign Mission School student, Harriett's determination to marry Elias resulted in an exchange of heated correspondence among her family members. Traditional human-computer interaction (HCI) is based on 'cold' models of user cognition; that is, models of users as purely rational beings based on the information processing metaphor; however, an emerging perspective suggests that for the field of HCI to mature, its practitioners must adopt models of users that consider broader human needs and capabilities.
