Peirce And Hegel On Absolute Meaning, Gary Shapiro Jan 1981

Peirce And Hegel On Absolute Meaning, Gary Shapiro

Philosophy Faculty Publications

When Peirce's philosophy is approached in terms of his theory of meaning, it is usual to think of the connections between the pragmatic maxim and the more reductive accounts of classical empiricism or modern operationalism. The point of this paper is to suggest that this angle of approach is narrow and makes several aspects of Peirce's philosophy difficult to understand; on the positive side, I want to show how both the glories and miseries of Peirce's philosophical endeavor are thrown into high relief by noting his affinities and breaks with Hegel's dialectical theory of meaning. Peirce himself often pointed to …

Propositional And Nonpropositional Perceiving, Dan D. Crawford Dec 1974

Propositional And Nonpropositional Perceiving, Dan D. Crawford

Department of Philosophy: Faculty Publications

The general theory of perception proposed by Roderick Chisholm in his book Perceiving: A Philosophical Study1 has gained considerable acceptance among contemporary philosophers of perception. In this paper, I will review and evaluate one part of this theory and show where I believe an important modification is necessary.

Chisholm distinguishes what he thinks are two importantly different senses of “perceive,” a propositional and a nonpropositional sense, and then proposes a definition of each. The propositional sense of “perceive” is expressed in contexts in which what is perceived is referred to by a propositional clause, as in

1. George perceives …

The Philosophy Of Gabriel Marcel, Mark Coppenger Jan 1969

The Philosophy Of Gabriel Marcel, Mark Coppenger

Honors Theses

The first contact I had with the writings of Gabriel Marcel was in his book, Being and Having. The book had the effect of cooling me toward Marcel because so often I really had to struggle to get what he was saying. Next, Homo Viator came a little more easily but was still difficult, especially the parts about hope and Rilke. Finally, I read the two-volume work, The Mystery of Being. The first volume was a lot clearer than the first two books, but in the second volume, I really started to get the feel for his writings. …

Paul Feyerabend's Telegram, Rudolf Kaehr

Rudolf Kaehr

6-page telegram from Paul Feyerabend (London) to Rolf Kaehr (Westberlin) Telegram 1 I am ill. Please let the seminar continue in my absence. Inform Prof Landmann and Prof Huebner, cancel the hotel reservation and read the following final message to my class on tuesday 1pm: I am sorry that I cannot give what Telegram 2 would have been my last lecture to you. In this lecture I would have elaborated on Verons argument and would have tried to show that it also excludes consience, self expression, identification. Turning back to the empiricist methodology and demand for theoretical unification I would …

The Concept Of Spirit As Related To The Knowledge Of God In The Thought Of Paul Tillich And Nicholas Berdyaev, Wilbur W. Brannon Jan 1967

The Concept Of Spirit As Related To The Knowledge Of God In The Thought Of Paul Tillich And Nicholas Berdyaev, Wilbur W. Brannon

OBU Graduate Theses

The problem of knowing God has not been solely a twentieth century phenomenon, but the current "death of God" theology has brought the problem into focus within the Christian community in terms of secular involvement. A "Christian agnosticism" has emerged from within the Church criticizing archaic ecclesiastical structures and confessions. Those criticisms have been leveled by radical theologians, represented by Altizer, Hamilton, and Van Buren, who have denied for humanity a living God and consequently a knowledge of God.

Modern man has suffered the loss of life's meaning and its supportive Reality. "God", therefore, has become a term without meaningful …

The Education Of The Whole Man, Ralph Borsodi

School of Living Documents

The Education of the Whole Man is essentially two books in one volume. The first is a general treatise. This book opens with a challenge to Borsodi’s Indian friends. They must choose a national destiny: Gandhi or Western industrialization. The second section addresses the problem of education in 30 chapters. There are many forms of education: Physical education, emotional education, perceptual education, introspection education, axiological education, volitional education, etc. But these are not different things. They are part of a whole. There are stages of development, from infancy through age twelve, sixteen, eighteen, higher education, adult education. Chapter by chapter …

Dialectic As A Philosophical Method, Pierre Grimes Jan 1958

Dialectic As A Philosophical Method, Pierre Grimes

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Philosophy is the quest for wisdom and hence it may share a common end with religion. Not all philosophies are, however, concerned with this end, nor, again are all religions involved with a quest for wisdom. There may be different techniques and tools employed in the accomplishment of wisdom, but this dissertation is concerned only with the study of the nature and use of reason. In the philosophy of Plato reason is employed in diverse fields including mathematics, myths, and elaborate analogies, but when he turns to reason itself, then it becomes important to this analysis. Reason may be utilized …
