The Demand For Love And The Mediation Of Desire In La Traición En La Amistad, Matthew D. Stroud
The Demand For Love And The Mediation Of Desire In La Traición En La Amistad, Matthew D. Stroud
Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research
María de Zayas's comedia, La traición en la amistad [Friendship betrayed], presents us with a truly stunning demonstration of intrigue and deception in the service of love. Based on the relationships among nine people, we have women who deceive men, men who deceive women, women who betray each others' friendships, servants who are quick to comment on the absurdity of all these machinations, and a final scene in which most of the principals get married. What distinguishes this play is the presence of the ninth character, Fenisa, who acts and reacts just as the other women do before the …

A Woman's Tragedy: Catherine Bernard's 'Brutus', Nina Ekstein

The theater has traditionally been a male domain. The ranks of authors, directors, and even actors have long been overwhelmingly dominated by men. In Western drama, no women playwrights have gained admittance to the literary canon. While never absolute, the relative exclusion of women from dramatic authorship is even greater when the type of theater in question is tragedy. Carol Gelderman asks bluntly: "Why is it that no woman has ever written a great tragedy?". A number of explanations have been put forward that suggest deep-seated links between men and tragedy: Susan Gilbert and Susan Gubar find that "the structure …

Christ’S Body As Public And Private Signifier: A Study Of Blason In La Ceppède's Théorèmes, Russell J. Ganim
Christ’S Body As Public And Private Signifier: A Study Of Blason In La Ceppède's Théorèmes, Russell J. Ganim
Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications
Much of the concept of space in La Ceppède's Théorèmes is defined in the portrayal of Christ's body. In this text, space appears as distances or gaps—between God and humankind, grace and damnation, poet and reader—which must be overcome by contemplation of Christ's redemptive act. Within the poet's meditative framework, Christ's body acts as a physical, intermediate space in which the metaphysical principles of celestial will take form. For the meditant, the knowledge gained from reflection on Christ's body allows the transcendence from the external, physical spaces of the material world in which s/he lives, to the internal, spiritual spaces …

Review-essay on Inventing A-m-e-r-i-c-a; Spanish Historiography and the Formation of Eurocentrism, by José Rabasa.
In Inventing A-m-e-r-i-c-a: Spanish Historiography and the Formation of Eurocentrism, José Rabasa explores both the process of the creation of America via language and the gradual emergence of a European subjectivity key to the colonial enterprise of Europe. Although the author is on the side of those who believe that the New World was not discovered but invented, he disagrees with the notion of invention espoused by Edmundo O’Gorman in his classic La invención de América (1957; 1977). In the end, he states in his …

Martine Bercot's edition of the first Education sentimentale will be of use to Flaubert scholarship, and may well be the best one available for some time to come. As inexpensive as it is, this volume would also be an excellent addition to any graduate course on Flaubert.

Review Of Monic Robillard, Le Désir De La Vierge: Hérodiade Chez Mallarmé, Marshall C. Olds
French Language and Literature Papers
With this insightful though sometimes difficult book Monic Robillard has gone well beyond his earlier work on Stéphane Mallarmé's Hérodiade to offer a reading of the 30-year project where psychoanalytic paradigms and close reading create a lively and suggestive network that moves to the center of Mallarmé's poetics.

Saisons Riches Et Fécondes: Education Et Identité Africaine Dans Le Cinéma D'Euzhan Palcy, Russell J. Ganim
Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications
A Kiss Is Not Just A Kiss: The Use Of The Baiser In La Ceppède's Théorèmes, Russell J. Ganim
A Kiss Is Not Just A Kiss: The Use Of The Baiser In La Ceppède's Théorèmes, Russell J. Ganim
Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications
The combination of religious and erotic motifs plays a large role in shaping the artistic experience of the Renaissance. One thinks of paintings such as della Francesca’s Baptism of Christ (1540), as well as Michelangelo’s Last Judgment (1545). Lyric poetry also provides numerous examples of this aesthetic bond; among them Petrarch’s “Chiare fresche e dolci acque” and Ronsard’s “Je veux brûler, pour m’envoler aux cieux.” The lyric subgenre which perhaps most distinctly follows the trend of merging sexual and divine experience is the baiser, or kiss. Originally secular in nature, the baiser first appeared in epigram form in the …

Cesáreo Bandera published Mimesis conflictiva in 1975, at least a decade ahead of its time in terms of its reception by the comediantes. Using the ideas of René Girard, Bandera focuses primarily on Don Quixote, but a significant section of the monograph is devoted to a discussion of La vida es sueño. His discussion is wide ranging, dealing with the relationship between subject and object; the nature of, and processes surrounding, the sacrificial victim; the necessary relationship between truth, violence, civilization, reason, and illusion; the role of desire and (in)differentiation in rivalry; and the all-pervasive influence of …
Emblem As Meditative Icon In La Ceppède’S Théorèmes , Russell J. Ganim
Emblem As Meditative Icon In La Ceppède’S Théorèmes , Russell J. Ganim
Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications
While full comprehension of the divine image in La Ceppède’s Théorèmes is at times quite remote, understanding of the human image is often more accessible. I will argue that many of La Ceppède’s sonnets can be read as emblems which, both didactically and aesthetically, reveal the human in the divine through the iconographic portrayal of images, either written or graphic. By icon, I refer to the sacred representation and interpretation of images for the purpose of collective worship. Icons become the artistic means by which a devout subject, either poet or meditant, may identify and envision a religious object. In …

German Language and Literature Papers
In medieval city chronicles of northern Germany we find an inter esting instance of polysemy in the word “schicht,” which is used to mean both “history” and “uprising”. Th is semantic overlap suggests a strong association in the contemporary imagination between the processes of historical change and the manifestation of disorder. This association is reflected in the practice of city chronicle writing in the medieval and late medieval period, which frequently was undertaken in the aftermath of an uprising. The chronicle documented the legitimacy of the restored order, and served the specific purpose of perpetuating the city’s present legal status, …

Spatial Form And Character Revelations: Korolenko's Siberian Stories, Radha Balasubramanian
Spatial Form And Character Revelations: Korolenko's Siberian Stories, Radha Balasubramanian
Russian Language and Literature Papers
Vladimir Galaktionovich Korolenko's (1853-1921) short stories unravel spatially rather than temporally--that is, juxtaposition of episodes in a moment of time takes precedence over sequential presentation. Past and present are often "fused in one comprehensive view," giving them a spatial form. Korolenko's narrator, proceeding along a road, unexpectedly meets interesting individuals and soon witnesses their actions and/or shares with them events from their past that have shaped their present world view through a recollection. It is as though the very volatility of the protagonists' present situation helps disclose a moment of decision from their past. This distinct present is portrayed through …

The Task Of The Historian In El General En Su Laberinto, Isabel Alvarez-Borland
Spanish Department Faculty Scholarship
In El general en su laberinto, García Marquez offers a critique of the historical process and examination of the methodology of history as a discipline in several interrelated dimensions. Central to a vision of the novel as "historiographic metafiction" are the author's disclosure of his own methodology in compiling the story of Bolivar an the relationship between oral versions and written documents within the fiction itself.

The rapid transmission of data in machine readable formats has for many years now been a staple of the business world. Now, in a number of fields, the same technology is being applied to scholarly subjects, including French and English literatures. The availability of primary texts ready to be read by one's own computer is almost as great a revolution in textual dissemination as the invention of the printing press. Other disciplines, in which scholars can exchange texts either on diskette or by uploading and downloading to a network, are far ahead of Spanish literature, but there is both a …

Review Of Zwischen Revolution Und Orthodoxie? Schelling Und Seine Freunde Im Stift Und An Der Universität Tübingen: Texte Und Untersuchungen. By Wilhelm G. Jacobs, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy
German Language and Literature Papers
This volume makes a significant contribution to our understanding of the education Schelling and his contemporaries received at the Tübingen Stift in the last decades of the eighteenth century. The book consists of three parts: first Jacobs's discussion of the academic setting of the Stift, and then two sections of previously unpublished texts-a selection of eight Specimina (masters' essays) written between 1785 and 1795 by some of the lesser lights at the St$, followed by a list of the titles of all dissertations and Speciminawritten at the Stift during the same time period. While earlier studies have pointed …
The Destabilization Of The Future In Racine's Iphigénie, Nina Ekstein
The Destabilization Of The Future In Racine's Iphigénie, Nina Ekstein
Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research
The action of Racine's Iphigénie is only a prelude, a pretext, to a much greater future event. The Trojan War looms large before the entire dramatic universe, drawing the characters inexorably forward. The force of the future in this play has long been evident: Georges Poulet discussed it in relation to the weight of the past in Andromaque: "[o]uvrant ou fermant un récit, le moment de l'action perd donc presque entièrement sa valeur propre, sa qualité de seul moment 'présent.' . . . Sa 'réalité' n'est pas assez riche en soi pour triompher d'un passé ou d'un futur. Le …
The Desiring Subject And The Promise Of Salvation: A Lacanian Study Of Sor Juana's El Divino Narciso, Matthew D. Stroud
The Desiring Subject And The Promise Of Salvation: A Lacanian Study Of Sor Juana's El Divino Narciso, Matthew D. Stroud
Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research
Both Sor Juana's El divino Narciso and Jacques Lacan's psychoanalytic writings deal with the nature of humankind and the nature of God. This article examines the play and its religious philosophy in light of Lacan's imaginary, symbolic, and real registers, as well as Lacan's important concepts of the Other, the divided subject, jouissance, and the death drive. Ultimately, both Lacan and Sor Juana arrive at the same conclusion, that the basis of the religious experience is grounded in the "lack" in both the subject and God, and that only death can bring the promised state of purity.

Shades Of Borges: The Construction Of Identity In 'The Mirror And The Mask', Timothy Baland
Shades Of Borges: The Construction Of Identity In 'The Mirror And The Mask', Timothy Baland
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
Shades of Borges is an explication of "The Mirror and The Mask" using theories, terminologies, and methodologies presented by Jean Baudrillard and Michel Foucault. In the story, the king of Ireland orders his court poet to compose three successive odes, each surpassing its predecessor. The story ends with the death of the bard and the disenthronement of the king. The thesis analyzes the differences and similarities between the individual poems using Baudrillard's theories of the four "successive phases of the image" and the ascension of simulation over representation. The transition within the story from merely representational discourse to discourse that …

The Weight Of The Future In Racine's Theater, Nina Ekstein
Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research
The future has a curious status in the theater. Like the past, it cannot be represented on stage, but is limited to the field of discourse. The future can be spoken, but not literally pre-figured. Purely textual, lacking any referent, concretized or otherwise, the future appears essentially alien to the theater. For Anne Ubersfeld, "le problème fondamental du temps au théâtre est qu'il se situe par rapport à un icimaintenant ... le théâtre est ce qui par nature nie la présence du passé et du futur. L’écriture théâtrale est une écriture au présent." Yet the future constitutes an important …
Genre And Lack In The Comedia, Matthew D. Stroud
Genre And Lack In The Comedia, Matthew D. Stroud
Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research
The history of genre studies is almost a textbook case of critical self-deconstruction. Beginning with Aristotle himself, we are faced with irreconcilable differences between description and prescription, literary cause and psychological effect, the written Poetics and the promised but lacking sequel on comedy. The temptation to compromise on a definition (or multiple definitions) of a genre has been met with startlingly rigid manifestos for limiting our use of a word such as "tragedy" only to those plays that fulfill the particular narrowly- conceived requirements of one critic or another. Given Jacques Lacan's penchant for jumping into the middle of thorny …
