The Selected Language Styles Of African Americans In An Urban Environment, Danielle R. England Dec 1999

The Selected Language Styles Of African Americans In An Urban Environment, Danielle R. England

McCabe Thesis Collection

The overall scope of this research is to define and explain the different styles of African American English. What are they and how do they affect the American society? The means by which many African Americans communicate is different from what American deems as standard American English (SAE). To this date, the voice of Black America has been categorizes as Black Dialect, African American Vernacular English, and Black English. Only until recently has the Black voice been regarded as Ebonics. Where did these language styles originate and why do we continue to speak it? Of course, there is nothing wrong …

Foreword To Gayle A. Levy, Refiguring The Muse, Marshall C. Olds Oct 1999

Foreword To Gayle A. Levy, Refiguring The Muse, Marshall C. Olds

French Language and Literature Papers

In the study that follows, Professor Levy explores the historically grounded topos of the Muse figure as it was developed by poets in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It is a movement of renewal, and one that could occur in large part because of a revolution in thinking-both poetic and social-about issues related to gender and representation. She has asked that I write a brief foreword, which I am happy to do with an observation prompted by reading her book.

Value And Social Mobility In Flaubert, Marshall C. Olds Sep 1999

Value And Social Mobility In Flaubert, Marshall C. Olds

French Language and Literature Papers

L’Education sentimentale may be construed as an historical novel at least insofar as it addresses questions of social change and enduring value as they are related to those of history and individual memory. As in Balzac and later in Proust, what is true for the individual applies to society. There is an especially Flaubertian understanding of movement in society and movement across time that remains tied more to demands of diegetic coherence than to laws of historical necessity, however. Singulative narration as it appears in the novel is a kind of smoke screen hiding a more pervasive iteration whereby the …

These are not encyclopedic articles, but they offer insights into the subjects by refemng briefly when relevant to important nineteenth- and twentieth-century novels. Each article is accommodated in about twenty pages. This book is a “real companion” to Slavic scholars, a boon to …

At The Limits Of Language : The Challenge Of Modernist Literature To Translation Theories And Practice, Nigel B. R Reeves Apr 1999

At The Limits Of Language : The Challenge Of Modernist Literature To Translation Theories And Practice, Nigel B. R Reeves

文學與翻譯研究中心 論文叢刊 Centre for Literature and Translation Occasional Paper Series

It is a great pleasure to be able to address colleagues and students at Lingnan College on a fresh occasion.* And on this occasion I would like to begin by talking Nonsense!

There was an old man of Hong Kong
Who never did anything wrong;
He lay on his back, with his head in a sack,
That innocuous old man of Hong Kong.

Fortunately I did not have to invent this nonsense-it is of course a limerick by Edward Lear, the Victorian humorist poet. It illustrates vividly the problem which I want to debate with you today-the challenge of Modernist …

Staging The Tyrant On The Seventeenth-Century French Stage, Nina Ekstein Jan 1999

Staging The Tyrant On The Seventeenth-Century French Stage, Nina Ekstein

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

The tyrant is a frequent figure of seventeenth-century theater. While not as ubiquitous as young lovers, fathers, or kings, the tyrant is a persistent subset of this last group throughout the period. Like so many elements of seventeenth-century theater, the tyrant has it origins in antiquity, both in terms of political theory and drama. Tyrants first appeared on the stage of fifth-century Athens, and the legends and histories of the tyrants of antiquity are often repeated on the French stage of the seventeenth century, from Hérode sending Marianne to her death, to Brute assassinating César, to Néron eliminating his rival …

Inner Darkness: Images Of The Unconscious In Virgil's Aeneid, Frank Peter Bendewald Jan 1999

Inner Darkness: Images Of The Unconscious In Virgil's Aeneid, Frank Peter Bendewald

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

Dark, dire images pervade the Aeneid, and the epic poem's final lines are decidedly unsettling. Through his images and symbols, Virgil depicts a conflict within Aeneas, and he seems to deliberately resolve it in a way that leaves his reader disquieted. Aeneas' conflict, like Achilles' inner struggle in the Iliad, is as a semi-divine hero, born of a goddess and a mortal man, torn between his mortal and divine sides, and it can been seen as the human conflict between body and spirit. In resolving this heroic, and indeed human, conflict, Virgil shows his hero darkly acquiescing to his divine …

Expending The Content Of Curriculum : Implementation Of The World Wide Web Into Foreign Language Teaching, Ping Gao Jan 1999

Expending The Content Of Curriculum : Implementation Of The World Wide Web Into Foreign Language Teaching, Ping Gao

Graduate Research Papers

This study investigated the factors that impact the decisions to integrate the World Wide Web into foreign language curriculum. This inquiry involved a combined approach -- including a survey and a case study. The current status of the technology application in foreign language instruction at a state university in the United States was assessed through the survey. It revealed that integrating the Web was the least immediate concern of most foreign language professors due to their limited knowledge, their inadequate training, and their ambiguous attitudes. A case study of an innovator's practice of integrating the Web in foreign language instruction …

Manuscripts And Markets: The Case And Cause Of Authors In Search Of Publishers, Russell J. Ganim Jan 1999

Manuscripts And Markets: The Case And Cause Of Authors In Search Of Publishers, Russell J. Ganim

Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications

In November 1996, the New Yorh Times ran a front page article dealing with the crisis in publishing monographs in the humanities. The piece opened with the experience of a young scholar in Oregon who had sent a book manuscript on Theodor Adorno to a major university press who refused to read it for reasons of "marketability" (Al). As the report continued, it outlined the economic and editorial reasons why many researchers in the humanities, especially at the beginning of their careers, encountered significant difficulty landing contracts at presses that would have published their work in the past. At the …

Hacia Una Estética Del Análisis De Códigos Poéticos, William Martínez Jan 1999

Hacia Una Estética Del Análisis De Códigos Poéticos, William Martínez

World Languages and Cultures

World Languages and Cultures

Vladimir Galaktionovich Korolenko, 1853-1921, Radha Balasubramanian Sep 1998

Vladimir Galaktionovich Korolenko, 1853-1921, Radha Balasubramanian

Russian Language and Literature Papers

Vladimir Galaktionovich Korolenko is well known not only as a publicist and a humanitarian, but also as a writer. His voluminous publicistic writing, based on his service to the people, championed truth and justice. It ranges from exposing activities of the local gentry in their manipulation of the city’s bank, court, and local zemstvo, to condemning the revolutionaries openly, after they took over power, for not complying with the law and for forcing changes too rapidly. As a writer of fiction, Korolenko’s contribution to Russian narrative prose is in the form of short stories.

Future Mallarmé (Present Picasso): Portraiture And Self-Portraiture In Poetry And Art, Marshall C. Olds Jul 1998

Future Mallarmé (Present Picasso): Portraiture And Self-Portraiture In Poetry And Art, Marshall C. Olds

French Language and Literature Papers

Let us turn to what might at first seem the improbable encounter between Stéphane Mallarmé and Pablo Picasso. On the face of it, so much separates them: the one patiently mining a limited set of aesthetic notions, spending years perfecting some of his major works, the other incessantly exploring all possibilities of visual representation, moving through styles sometimes weekly, creating prodigiously in different media, living dozens of careers. In their separate ways, though, they both were extreme examples of creativity. Whether or not for that reason, Picasso turned toward (if not to) Mallarmé at two distinct points in his career: …

Elaboración De Una Poética En Los Ensayos Tempranos De Octavio Paz, J. Agustín Pastén B. Jun 1998

Elaboración De Una Poética En Los Ensayos Tempranos De Octavio Paz, J. Agustín Pastén B.

Consolation And The Work Of Mourning In Angéline De Montbrun, Thomas M. Carr Jr. May 1998

Consolation And The Work Of Mourning In Angéline De Montbrun, Thomas M. Carr Jr.

French Language and Literature Papers

The dynamics of this foundational text of Canadian literature come from its heroine's drive to resolve her overwhelming sense of loss. Angéline loses her father, her beauty, and the love of her fiance Maurice within the space of three pages against a backdrop formed by memory of the loss suffered at the Conquest. Indeed, reading the novel under the sign of resignation is a commonplace. Critics as diverse as the early Catholic reviewers, more recent biographically-oriented researchers, and Freudian and feminist commentators have underscored Angeline's attempts to resign herself to this succession of losses. To a lesser extent they have …

Review Of Emblems And Alchemy, By Alison Adams & Stanton J. Linden, Eds., Russell J. Ganim Mar 1998

Review Of Emblems And Alchemy, By Alison Adams & Stanton J. Linden, Eds., Russell J. Ganim

French Language and Literature Papers

Combining revived interest in both the emblem and alchemy, this volume is the third in a series of works on emblem studies published by the French Department at the University of Glasgow. Its ten essays, divided among three major categories entitled, “A Theoretical Perspectives”, “The English Alchemists”, and “Continental Manifestations”, stress inter disciplinarity as they explore the relationships between text, image, and alchemical practice. Broad in scope but detailed in its analyses, the compendium raises several intriguing questions about the correspondence between literature, art, and pseudo-science. Despite the diversity of its topics, the collection is often surprisingly unified in its …

Less Or More Black And White? Reassessing Genet's Les Nègres In Light Of Both Published Versions, Brian G. Kennelly Jan 1998

Less Or More Black And White? Reassessing Genet's Les Nègres In Light Of Both Published Versions, Brian G. Kennelly

World Languages and Cultures

Each of the five plays by Jean Genet performed before his death in 1986 exists in more than one published version.2 Critics have discussed the differences between the various published versions of each play3 with the exception of Les nègres: the drama commissioned by Raymond Rouleau, first published by Marc Barbezat in 1958, first performed in a production by Roger Blin at the Thèâtre de Lutèce in Paris in 1959, and published in a revised edition the following year.

Why have the changes Genet made to Les nègres remained undiscussed? Perhaps the attention of critics, like that …

Mithridate, Displacement, And The Sea, Nina Ekstein Jan 1998

Mithridate, Displacement, And The Sea, Nina Ekstein

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

When Mithridate opens, the king is rumored dead in Colchide, killed by the Romans in battle. His return by sea at the end of the first act is not merely a surprise, but also a temporal, geographical, and almost metaphysical displacement. Mithridate's homecoming turns everything upside down and brings the full force of incest to the amorous rivalry between Phamace and Xipharès. Having successfully spread rumors of his own demise, Mithridate seems to return from the dead, arriving after an absence of a year, from a relatively distant land by the waters of the Pont-Euxin (the Black Sea). Life and …

Pedro Calderón De La Barca, Matthew D. Stroud

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

Don Pedro Calderón de Ia Barca was born on January 17, 1600, to parents of noble lineage. Although little is known of the early years of his life, it has been determined that Calderón attended the Jesuit Colegio Imperial in Madrid from about 1608 to about 1613. His mother died in 1610, after which his brother Diego left abruptly for Mexico, his sister Dorotea entered a convent, and his youngest sister Antonia went to live with her grandmother. In 1614, Pedro entered the University of Alcalá, and in 1615, after the death of his father, he went to study at …

A number of studies have shown that learning through the use of computers is more efficient than traditional methods and arouse students motivation (Johnson & Osguthorpe, 1986; Jung, 1992 ). The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of Computer-Assisted Instruction (CAI), to investigate the immense potential of Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL), and then to identify ways in which computers can be used to enhance foreign language learning.

Ramón López Velarde 1888–1921, J. Agustín Pastén B. Dec 1997

Ramón López Velarde 1888–1921, J. Agustín Pastén B.

Spanish Language and Literature Papers

Modern Mexican poetry begins with Ramón López Velarde. He is undoubtedly one of the most genuine poetic voices to inhabit that hard-to-classify period in Spanish American literature that stretches from Modernism to the vanguard poets. As a major representative of Spanish American postmodernismo (that is, the period that followed Modernismo), he is the first writer in Mexico to thematize the Mexican province in a new way. But he ought not be reduced to being the poet of the province. López Velarde was above all the creator of a new poetic language; this alone distinguishes him from González Martínez, for example. …
