Imperial Incentives And Individual Allegiances In Juan Antonio Correa’S La Pérdida Y Restauración De Bahía De Todos Los Santos, Matthew D. Stroud
Imperial Incentives And Individual Allegiances In Juan Antonio Correa’S La Pérdida Y Restauración De Bahía De Todos Los Santos, Matthew D. Stroud
Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research
Juan Antonio Correa's La pérdida y restauración de Bahía de Todos los Santos, written primarily to celebrate the successful recapture in 1625 of an important American colony from the Dutch and their allies, invites an investigation into why and how human beings can be motivated to support people and institutions that not only do not directly benefit them but may in fact operate in ways that are unfavourable to their own lives and causes. Informed by the political writings of Antonio Gramsci and Paulo Freire and the psychoanalytic theories of Jacques Lacan, this study explores the various reasons why …
The Dark Pastoral: Goethe And Atwood, Heather I. Sullivan
The Dark Pastoral: Goethe And Atwood, Heather I. Sullivan
Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research
The Anthropocene challenges the humanities to find means of representing and analysing our fossil-fueled practices that have spread industrial particulates over the entire globe, changed the climate, and reshaped landscapes into a “new nature.” In this essay, I propose the “dark pastoral” as an analytical trope, examining two framing texts from the Anthropocene: Goethe’s landmark 1797 pastoral German epic, Hermann and Dorothea, and Margaret Atwood’s 2003 postapocalyptic novel Oryx and Crake, the first installment of her MaddAddam trilogy which ends with a surprisingly pastoral flourish. At the early phases of the Anthropocene (as it is defined by Paul …

The Origin And Development Of Tigrinya Language Publications (1886 - 1991) Volume One, Abraham Negash
Staff publications, research, and presentations
Tigrinya is a Semitic language spoken in Eritrea and in the Tigray Region of Northern Ethiopia. Tigrinya is one of the nine languages in Eritrea. It was one of Eritrea's official languages (along with Arabic) during the short-lived federation with Ethiopia (1952-1962). When Ethiopia officially annexed Eritrea in 1962, Amharic also formally replaced Tigrinya and Arabic; and was established as an official language by the imperial government of Ethiopia. In 1993, when Eritrea officially declared its independence through referendum. Tigrinya regained its status as a working language.
Tigrinya has its own alphabet of 32 letters adopted from Ge'ez, a language …
Artificially Intelligent Computer Assisted Language Learning System With Ai Student Component, Denee M. Mcclain
Artificially Intelligent Computer Assisted Language Learning System With Ai Student Component, Denee M. Mcclain
Capstone Research Projects
Intelligent Computer Assisted Language Learning (ICALL) systems follow an accepted format, which utilizes an artificially intelligent tutor. The systems allow the user to input a sentence in the target language and the AI tutor analyzes the sentence and provides error correction. This approach can be expensive, impractical, and inflexible. Inflexibility can result in a lower quality of learning for the users of these systems. Here I present an alternative format for ICALL systems that utilizes an artificially intelligent student. This alternative is cost effective and practical because it does not require extra development time to make the artificial intelligence an …

The Cornelian Ethics Of Flight And The Case Of Horace, Nina Ekstein
The Cornelian Ethics Of Flight And The Case Of Horace, Nina Ekstein
Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research
Flight is a simple dramatic action, one that lends itself to any number of different plots. its implied movement can be represented on stage or merely recounted. So common is it that the words fuite and fuir appear in every one of Corneille’s 32 plays, from as infrequently as twice to as many as 32 times.1 The two terms belong to a broad semantic network including retraite, éviter, dérober, échapper, partir, quitter, abandoner, but differ in their suggestion of abrupt, precipitous movement as well as the element of fear implied. furetière begins …

Creating Knowledge
Dear Students, Colleagues, Alumni and Friends,
Throughout my career as faculty and administrator in higher education I have been honored with the opportunity to introduce and celebrate the publication of scholarly work by colleagues and graduate students in many disciplines and institutions around the world. After more than three decades of doing so, this is the first time that I have the pleasure of introducing a formal publication of work created by a talented group of undergraduate scholars. This honor is further magnified by the fact that beyond its formal format, this is a reviewed publication of extraordinary rigor and …
Don Quixote In Russia In The Eighteenth And Nineteenth Centuries: The Problem Of Perception And Interpretation, Slav N. Gratchev Phd
Don Quixote In Russia In The Eighteenth And Nineteenth Centuries: The Problem Of Perception And Interpretation, Slav N. Gratchev Phd
Modern Languages Faculty Research
This study examines the problem of the perception of Don Quixote in Russia in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. By using materials inaccessible to English-speaking scholars, I want to demonstrate that this process of appropriation was a long and a complex one, and there were specific reasons for that. The first modern novel, upon arrival in Russia, received minimal attention and was perceived as a simple, comical book; then, gradually, it started to gain significance. The majority of the materials that are used throughout this text are only available in Russian, are kept in the scientific libraries of Saint Petersburg …

Left Brain Vs. Right Brain: An Analysis Of Cervantes' Don Quixote, Michael D. Scimeca
Left Brain Vs. Right Brain: An Analysis Of Cervantes' Don Quixote, Michael D. Scimeca
Honors Undergraduate Theses
El ingenioso hidalgo Don Quixote de la Mancha sits at the crossroads of two defined Spanish early modern contexts, combining Renaissance ideals with Baroque elements into one Golden Age masterpiece. The theme of duality present throughout the work finds true expression in Cervantes’ well-educated protagonist, Alonso Quijano. In him, the reader glimpses the struggle between antiquity versus early modernity, ideality versus reality, instability versus sanity, and unhealthiness versus healthiness. These medical themes and the underlying sociocultural facets will be investigated by thoroughly evaluating Cervantes’ treatment of human consciousness. In doing so, this study aims to explore the following questions: to …
Facilitating Lexical Acquisition In Beginner Learners Of Italian Through Task-Induced Involvement Load, Vanessa J. Natale Rukholm
Facilitating Lexical Acquisition In Beginner Learners Of Italian Through Task-Induced Involvement Load, Vanessa J. Natale Rukholm
The Coastal Review
This empirical study explores the facilitation of lexical acquisition and retention through an incidental experiment examining the effect of Involvement Load on Italian vocabulary growth among beginner learners. The experiment, with a pre-test/post-test design investigates the facilitative effects of elaborate processing on L2 lexical acquisition and retention. Participants in sections of the same first-year Italian course were divided into one of five groups consisting of a Control Group and four Treatment groups. Treatment groups were divided based on level of Involvement (Laufer & Hulstijn, 2001) such that some groups processed target words elaborately (Craik, 2002; Lockhart, 2002) through vocabulary exercises …

La Adquisición De Prestigio De Características No Estándares: El Caso De La Elisión De /-D-/ En El Andaluz, Carmen Ruiz-Sánchez
The Coastal Review
Most Andalusian characteristics lack overt prestige at the national level. However, Hernández-Campoy argues that adoption of non-standard features, like deletion of /-d-/, is taking place in standard Castilian areas, which entails a subsequent change in prestige. This study investigates the social manifestation of /-d-/ deletion in Alcalá de Guadaíra (Seville). The results indicate that the deleted variant is widespread in all the social groups. The phenomenon predominates among younger speakers, which could indicate that this process, already noted in the 16th century, is still vigorous and could indeed be acquiring overt prestige.

The Contribution Of Call To Advanced-Level Foreign/Second Language Instruction, Jack Burston, Kelly Arispe
World Languages Faculty Publications and Presentations
This paper evaluates the contribution of instructional technology to advanced-level foreign/second language learning (AL2) over the past thirty years. It is shown that the most salient feature of AL2 practice and associated Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) research are their rarity and restricted nature. Based on an analysis of four leading CALL journals (CALICO, CALL, LL&T, ReCALL), less than 3% of all CALL publications deal with AL2. Moreover, within this body of research, the range of languages involved is very restricted. Three languages, English, German and French, account for nearly 87% of the studies. Likewise, in nearly 81% of …

Entrevistas A María Reimóndez, Rosa Montero Y Julia Otxoa: El Arte De La Escritura Y El Activismo, Estrella Cibreiro
Spanish Department Faculty Scholarship
Writings by Spanish contemporary authors María Reimóndez, Rosa Montero, and Julia Otxoa display, not only a deep awareness of local and national matters, but also a noteworthy engagement with broader issues of a global nature. Their works highlight, furthermore, the diversity of female voices in Spanish literature as well as the pluralism of languages, cultures, and geographies that make up the Iberian Peninsula today. This article provides a brief description of this research project as a whole, a concise critical introduction to each of the author’s works, and interviews with the three writers. The introduction to María Reimóndez’s work focuses …

Casting Sound: Modality And Poetics In Gabriella Ghermandi’S Regina Di Fiori E Di Perle, Laura Dolp, Eveljn Ferraro
Modern Languages & Literature
This article investigates Gabriella Ghermandi’s novel Regina di fiori e di perle (2007) through two disciplinary perspectives: the first considers music as a historical and social practice through historical observation of Ghermandi’s characters who reference Ethiopian oral traditions; the second explores the contemporary dynamics of migration and transnational identity through textual analysis that critiques how storytelling practices are carried into an Italian context. We argue that the novel reflects a dissemination of oral memory across generations and gender and into a postcolonial setting, and that its characters reflect adaptations to institutional and twentieth-century technological change. Crucially, and more specifically, the …
Studying And Supporting Writing In Student Organizations As A High-Impact Practice, Brian Hendrickson
Studying And Supporting Writing In Student Organizations As A High-Impact Practice, Brian Hendrickson
Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications
Institutions of postsecondary education, and the field of writing across the curriculum and in the disciplines (WAC/WID) in particular, need to do more to trouble learning paradigms that employ writing only in service to particular disciplines, only in traditional learning environments, and only in particular languages, or in service to an overly narrow or generalized idea of who students are, where they're going, and what they need to get there. In relating a cross-section of a larger effort to study and support writing as a high-impact practice in a student chapter of an international nonprofit humanitarian engineering student organization, I …

La Dénonciation Du Patriarcat Dans La Littérature Maghrébine D’Expression Française : Le Cas De Tahar Ben Jelloun Dans L ’Enfant De Sable, Laurent K. Kadji
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Patriarchy, which literally means the rule of a patriarch, is defined as a form of social organization in which political, religious and economic powers are held by a male to the detriment of a woman. In this male-dominated system, women are oppressed and discriminated. Such practices, which are no longer acceptable nowadays, are the main characteristic of the Arabic-Muslim societies of the Maghreb. The denunciation of the patriarchal ideology, as well as calling into question of the conservative structures of the society is some of the essential themes of French language literature in the Maghreb.

Use Of Student Created Video Podcasts To Promote Foreign Language Grammar Acquisition In Middle School, Sergio Parra
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
The use of video podcasts in education has emerged as a phenomenon that has gained a considerable amount of attention over the last few years. Although video podcasting is becoming a well-established technology in higher education, new multimedia instructional strategies such as student-created video podcasts in grades K-12 are under-researched.
The study investigated the effects of video podcasts created by students to promote foreign language grammar acquisition at the middle school level and find how students described such experience. The current investigation was conducted by using the explanatory sequential design, which is a mixed methods research design that occurs in …

The Frequency Of The Twelve Verb Tenses In Academic Papers Written By Native Speakers, Uthman Alzuhairy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Because of the significant and sensitive role of verb tenses in learning English, the current study examined the occurrence of the twelve verb tenses that native writers (NWs) utilized in their selected academic papers at the college level. In doing so, the study created a baseline of relative frequency of verb tense usage that may benefit further studies, especially those connected with the teaching grammar to English learners. The main linguistic items targeted for tabulation in this study were the 12 verb tenses, modals, perfect modals, and imperatives. These items were elicited from an original corpus of 31 research papers …

The basis of the physician-patient relationship relies heavily on communication. It has been known that conversation between physician and patient is important in both diagnosing and providing therapeutic support. However, according to the US Census Bureau twenty percent of the US population does not use English as their first language. These residents face language barriers on a daily basis, including when they are being treated medically. The aim of this study was to research the physician’s perspective on the use of interpretive services and how it impacts the physician- patient relationship. The research consisted of surveying physicians who encounter patients …

Carving Characters In The Mind. A Theoretical Approach To The Reception Of Characters In Audio Described Films, Nazaret Fresno
Writing and Language Studies Faculty Publications
From early childhood on we are exposed to characters in books, cartoons, films, theatre plays, and video games. Through these media we enter fascinating fictional worlds that seduce our imagination with every page or scene. As the events unfold, we become captivated by the story and its protagonists, whose deeper feelings are outlined in a succession of words and/ or images that the audience needs to endow with meaning. In their search for comprehension, readers and spectators “picture” the situations described in their minds by creating multimodal representations (mental models) about the events taking place, the place and time in …
