This dissertation examined preservice teachers’ expectations of their social studies methods course. Methods courses serve as a transition point helping preservice teachers to take content knowledge and learn how to use it as an educator. Social studies methods was selected due to its unique position in elementary education. It is a subject area that is no longer a core subject. Despite that, teachers are still expected to provide students with the content knowledge. The expectations matter because of how they influence preservice teachers’ approaches to the course.

A minoritized group that struggles in science, though it spans many genders, and racial/ethnic identities, are LGBTQIA+ individuals. These students face challenges such as a lack of social acceptance manifesting in microaggressions, prejudice and violence, as well as challenges in their studies due to non-inclusive curriculum. These challenges impact the learning experience of these students and reduce retention rates, especially in the sciences. In addition, the climate of social acceptance for LGBTQIA+ students at community colleges is worse than that of four-year institutes. Low reading proficiency in urban districts highlights an urgent need for effective instructional systems, but research on the "Walk to Learn" (WTL) model remains sparse. This study addresses the knowledge gap regarding how teachers perceive large-scale school-wide shifts to structured literacy using WTL. The study examined teacher perceptions of implementing a differentiated WTL literacy model using the Lippitt-Knoster framework for managing complex change. This qualitative case study involved interviews with 12 certified educators at an urban elementary school. However, abiotic stresses significantly threaten their growth and overall yield by disrupting essential physiological, cellular, and biochemical processes. It is well known that publications with collaborators from external institutions increase citations. This effect scales with spatial distance. There are also many barriers to long-distance collaborations, including linguistic differences, funding constraints, and the incremental costs of remote collaboration. This paper uses the Gulf of Mexico as a case study to examine long-distance research collaboration because it consists of three countries with diverse development levels and two prominent diplomatic languages, within a singular regional ecosystem of tremendous natural and economic value. Social vulnerability to flooding is shaped by intersectional social marginalization, yet most quantitative assessments employ indicators of single populations. This study applies spatial machine learning to examine how the intersectional social vulnerability indicators of poverty-race, poverty-housing tenure, and race-housing tenure compare with traditional discrete indicators of single populations in predicting flood exposure in California. Using geographically weighted random forests and partial dependence plots, we model spatial heterogeneity and non-linear relationships between social vulnerability and exposure. We quantified flood exposure using a population-adjusted measure derived from building footprints and modeled 500-year fluvial and pluvial flood hazard. The results reveal distinct explanatory …

These changes call for a significant re-evaluation of the role of deterrence in today's world. China’s rapid economic rise and unique development trajectory have long been the subject of scholarly debate, often framed through the concept of the “Beijing Consensus” as an alternative to the Washington Consensus. While initial conceptualizations highlight innovation, sustainability, and national sovereignty, later analyses highlighted elements like state capitalism and authoritarianism, particularly in the wake of the 2008 Global Financial Crisis. This research assesses the characteristics of today’s Africa–China relations using dependency theory, world systems theory, neocolonialism, and South-South cooperation, using comparisons between historical African dependence on European colonial powers and recent reliance on China in terms of trade, infrastructure, debt, and technology. This research identifies how contemporary cooperations either continue previous patterns of economic and political subordination or create a transformation of those relationships or provide a challenge to them. This paper will evaluate how security governance contributes to both the development of democracy and the establishment of stable institutions within newly independent post-colonial states in Africa. Security governance is examined here as it relates to the long-term influence of colonial legacy, military presence, and the politicization of the security services. The authors have based their analysis of this issue on qualitative data gathered from Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Kenya. The BDSM community has become an increasingly popular subject of study in relation to consent culture; however, the bulk of this research has been qualitative and lacks comparison to non-BDSM practitioners. The theory of planned behavior was used to design a measure comparing consent culture across 668 BDSM practitioners and non-practitioners. As predicted, the relationships specified by theory of planned behavior was replicated for both BDSM practitioners and nonpractitioners. Contrary to predictions, no significant differences were found between BDSM practitioners and non-practitioners for norms or behavioral intentions; however, BDSM practitioners reported significantly higher perceived behavioral control. Word knowledge is highly valuable to Autistic individuals, and although much research has characterized Autistic children’s vocabulary breadth (i.e., the number of lexical entries), less attention has been paid to vocabulary depth (i.e., the richness with which one understands a given word). In this exploratory post-hoc study, 11 Autistic children (one assigned female at birth) participated in novel and real word learning paradigms in which child-friendly referents were paired with CVCV word forms. This study aimed to explore how children of Latino immigrants described their attachment and substance use experiences. The narrative that formed implies that throughout their adolescence, children of Latino immigrants use substances in part to cope with their parents’ heightened expectations for the participants to perform well in school/work/life. Additional results find that children of Latino immigrants also form a sense of exoneration for their parents upon reaching young adulthood. Parasitism is one of the most common and diverse life history strategies, yet relatively little is known about the role of parasites as invasive species. Invasive species, which present one of the greatest threats to biodiversity, often need to overcome adverse environmental conditions as they establish and spread in new habitats. Invasive parasites are subject to these same conditions, though the effects may be mediated through their hosts. This study examines the factors shaping state responsiveness to U.S. nuclear counterproliferation efforts by building on Posture Optimization Theory (POT) and introducing Counterproliferation Responsiveness Theory (CRT). CRT proposes that nuclear posture conditions how states respond to external counterproliferation pressure by generating distinct operational consequences, particularly differences in operational visibility, strategic autonomy, and escalation requirements. These operational characteristics shape the political and strategic costs associated with resisting coercive pressure. This thesis explores nuclear war–related media (i.e., media involving “the Bomb”) from the late twentieth century, beginning in the early 1950s and ending in the late 1990s, although media from the 2000s and beyond are briefly touched on.
