Healthcare and mental healthcare disparities among rural communities in the United States remain a persistent and growing public health concern, driven by both structural barriers and sociocultural factors that continue to compromise rural community members’ utilization of healthcare services. Though structural barriers to rural healthcare are well-documented, there are continued gaps in the literature related to the understanding of sociocultural mechanisms contributing to these disparities. Anxiety is the most common mental health condition worldwide and contributes to substantial societal costs, personal distress, and impairment (World Health Organization, 2023). Given its high prevalence, low treatment utilization, and modest response rates, identifying protective factors to inform prevention efforts is critical (Mamede et al., 2022; Mendelson & Eaton, 2018). Mindfulness, or the ability to nonjudgmentally pay attention to the present moment, comprises five key facets: observing, describing, acting with awareness, nonjudging, and nonreactivity (Baer et al., 2006b). Consistent with Liberation theory, problematization is the process of creating critical reflection, a means by which critical consciousness occurs. It is a method for understanding issues faced by oppressed populations, while centering the perspective of these populations. Within Liberation spaces, problematization is critical for fostering critical consciousness, disrupting oppression, and promoting strength. However, problematization is a theoretical concept frame from narrative responses and lived experiences of marginalized individuals. Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are widespread and associated with significant and lasting psychological consequences, including posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and dissociation. Much of the existing literature has focused on adult trauma or narrowly examined childhood abuse and neglect, with comparatively limited attention given to other forms of childhood adversity such as witnessing intimate partner violence, parental separation, or household dysfunction. As a result, the differential psychological impact of distinct types of ACE exposure (i.e., maltreatment vs. household dysfunction) remains insufficiently understood. Alarm fatigue, a response to constant exposure to clinical devices’ alarms that can lead to a decrease in responsiveness and safety in healthcare settings. Although it’s well researched in practicing nurses, yet there isn’t much known if alarm fatigue can start in nursing school and how it affects nursing students when in clinical settings. This study examines the importance and effects of alarm fatigue among Georgia Southern University nursing students and the faculty/staff through a mixed-methods survey. Background:

Head louse pediculosis is a common problem among school-aged children. We assessed parental knowledge and practices about head louse infestations and factors contributing to the spread of head lice in families in Southeast Georgia.

Methods:

A self-administered questionnaire was completed by 197 parents, grandparents or guardians of school-aged children. Responses about participant’s demographics, knowledge about head lice, sources of information, treatment methods used, and behavioral practices that might contribute to head lice exposure and spread. Z-test or Chi-square test were used as appropriate, to identify population proportions across different variables with statistical significance (p-value) of < 0.05.

Background: Murine typhus, caused by Rickettsia typhi, is a flea-borne illness historically endemic to the southeastern United States, with initial cases reported in Atlanta, Georgia in 1913. Following vector control efforts, incidence declined significantly, and the disease was removed from the nationally notifiable disease list in 1987. While recent cases have been reported in select regions, murine typhus has not been documented in Georgia for decades. We present a pediatric case in Atlanta that may represent the first reported instance in nearly 40 years, suggesting possible reemergence in the Southeast.

In addition to outdated materials or a lack of resources that inaccurately depict Native Americans as well as stereotypes found in a variety of media, students are left with various misconceptions that they bring with them to the classroom. To begin to combat these hurdles, the author advocates for the use of high quality picture books written by Indigenous authors and shares a carefully curated list of texts and suggestions for classroom use. Artifacts offer opportunities for students to move beyond reading about the past to investigating evidence from it. In this article, we describe a museum-based artifact inquiry activity developed with teacher candidates and offers practical ways to adapt the activity for K–12 interdisciplinary classrooms. Beginning with a single artifact, learners make careful observations, distinguish observation from inference, develop compelling and supporting questions, investigate additional sources, construct evidence-based claims, and consider perspectives and limitations of the available evidence. This action research study evaluated the impact of three targeted instructional modifications designed to address a 9% decline in proficient and distinguished student performance on the Georgia Milestones End-of-Course (EOC) Assessment in High School U.S. History. Building upon district leadership initiatives, an instructional team implemented a triad of evidence-based interventions across 15 units: (a) transitioning from digital assessment platforms to traditional paper-and-pencil testing to protect academic integrity, (b) implementing "Launching with Intent" vocabulary bell-ringers utilizing Frayer models and interactive word walls, and (c) embedding weekly 10-item formative unit quizzes to leverage retrieval practice and memory reconsolidation. In politically uncertain times, social studies educators must cultivate classrooms where students feel valued, develop trust, take intellectual risks, and engage substantively with controversial issues and difficult histories. Drawing on our implementation of three community-building activities in a spring 2026 social studies education course, we describe how pre-service teachers (PSTs) experienced these activities as opportunities for relationship-building, identity exploration, and collaborative learning while preparing to teach difficult histories to local eighth-grade students. Each activity is paired with adaptations for middle and high school settings, including suggestions that attend to technology, student privacy, and diverse forms of expression. This article examines how weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) and the 2003 invasion of Iraq are represented in Georgia's social studies curriculum. Standard SSUSH23.a of the Georgia Standards of Excellence requires instruction on the War on Terror but does not specify how WMDs or the Iraq War's contested justification should be addressed, leaving curriculum deelopers significant discretion. This study analyzes two widely circulated U.S. history textbooks, The American Visoin and United States History: Reconstruction to the Present, finding that both emphasize WMDs as a central justification for invasion while giving limited attention to post-invasion findings that no stockpiles were discovered. …

Here we prove several results in support of this conjecture, where vertex-criticality and forbidden substructure conditions get us either close or all the way to containing $K_3 \lor E_6$.

Current Issues in Middle Level Education

Schools have been seeking alternatives to punitive discipline measures. As an alternative, restorative practices offer healing, community, and relationships. This case study examined a middle school that had been implementing restorative practices since the 2019–2020 school year, three full years at the time of study. A mixed-methods design was used in order to investigate whether the implementation of restorative practices had resulted in a decrease of student misbehaviors and an increase in staff perceptions of school climate. Background: This study evaluates the cost-effectiveness of accountability courts in Georgia, presenting them as a viable alternative in public health policy.

Methods: The research utilized survey data collected from 37 court programs across 40 distinct accountability court programs; it was conducted by the University of Georgia’s Carl Vinson Institute of Government in collaboration with the Council of Accountability Court Judges. The analysis includes a comparative assessment of cost savings, benefits, and differences among various court types, specifically focusing on drug courts, DUI courts, mental health courts, family treatment courts, and veterans treatment courts.
