Teacher Observations On The Success Of Hard-Of-Hearing Students In The Middle School Mathematics Classroom: A Case Study, Hannah Abbott Mcpherson

The purpose of this case study was to describe how deficits in foundational language among hard-of-hearing students influence mathematics instruction for general education middle school classroom teachers working to educate this student population in the South. The theory guiding this study was Paivio’s theory on dual coding, as it supports learning the necessary concepts needed to perform successfully in mathematics. The central research question for this study was: What are the experiences of middle school mathematics teachers working with hard-of-hearing students? E-Learning Strategies Implemented By Instructors For Individuals With Hearing Impairment, Sherin Joy, Archana Gundmi

The current study aims at exploring the strategies used by instructors to deal with e-learning of individuals with hearing impairment and identifying barriers encountered by instructors of individuals with hearing impairment through a telephonic interview. A set of validated probes was created, and a semi structured interview was conducted with 12 instructors who teach individuals with hearing impairment. The obtained data was subjected to inductive content analysis. Two major themes emerged from the data; challenges encountered by instructors and strategies adopted by instructors. The Experience Of Growing Up Deaf In A Hearing-Abled Family: A Phenomenological Study, Alison B. Wetmur

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

d/Deaf Americans constitute a cultural and linguistic minority in America. Most d/Deaf people, 90–95%, are born to hearing-abled parents. By a wide margin, hearing-abled families prefer that their d/Deaf children learn spoken English and enroll their children in oral-education programs. Existing literature must highlight the unique struggles d/Deaf people face when growing up in hearing-abled families. By interviewing 14 d/Deaf adults born into hearing-abled families, this study explored the lived realities of growing up different in ability than other family members. These d/Deaf adults spoke about their childhood feelings of shame and isolation and ongoing frustrations. Respondents also often spoke …

The Effectiveness Of Acceptance And Commitment Therapy Based On The Handicraft In Reducing Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Among Hearing Impaired University Students, Adel S. Abbady, Eman M. W. Ezzat

Information Sciences Letters

The present study aimed to assess the effectiveness of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) based on the use of handicrafts in reducing symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) among university students with hearing impairments. A total of 12 hearing impaired students were randomly assigned to either the experimental group (n=6, M=19.47, SD=3.55) or the control group (n=6, M=19.47, SD=3.55). Participants in the experimental group underwent fifteen sessions of group-based ACT using handicrafts. The researchers measured PTSD symptoms before, immediately, after, and two months after the therapy sessions. The findings revealed that ACT based on the use of handicrafts effectively reduced …

Objectives: Understanding speech-in-noise (SiN) is a complex task that recruits multiple cortical subsystems. Individuals vary in their ability to understand SiN. This cannot be explained by simple peripheral hearing profiles, but recent work by our group (Kim et al. 2021, Neuroimage) highlighted central neural factors underlying the variance in SiN ability in normal hearing (NH) subjects. The present study examined neural predictors of SiN ability in a large cohort of cochlear-implant (CI) users. Design: We recorded electroencephalography in 114 postlingually deafened CI users while they completed the California consonant test: a word-in-noise task. This exhibit briefly describes the origin and curation of the Deaf Catholic Archives and includes images of selected items.

This unique collection was founded by Rev. Joseph Bruce, S.J. in the 1970s and is housed in the Archives & Distinctive Collections Department at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts.
