Making Faces critiques the naturalization of gender norms and asserts that all gender expression is learned and imitative. With respect to my work, “naturalization” refers to the attribution of patterns of behavior to an unbreakable essence at the core of a person; the distinct qualities that place masculinity and femininity in opposition are often attributed to natural characteristics of the male and female sexes. This thesis examines the historical formation of the "rooftop Korean," the racial figure of the armed Korean American shopkeeper that emerged during the 1992 Los Angeles Uprising and has since been mobilized repeatedly in service of anti-Black counterinsurgency. Drawing on the framework of racial capitalism, this thesis argues that the rooftop Korean was not a spontaneous product of the Korean-Black conflict in South Central Los Angeles but the culmination of decades of U.S.-Korea relations, South Korean militarization, and the racial geography of capitalist development on both sides of the Pacific.

This thesis analyses the practice of documenting and uploading roadside memorials in the Western United States as a socially transformative process facilitated between two distinct kinds of noticing. Drawing on (auto)ethnographies of roadside memorial sites in Colorado and California, interviews with photographers and cartographers working primarily in the American Southwest, and Google Street View media, this research examines how recognition of the social negotiations involving memory and mortality that are already present in the physical shrines evolves when documenters capture and transpose them online. This thesis argues that notifications are not merely features of digital devices but infrastructural forces that quietly reorganize the conditions under which communication is perceived, enacted, and understood. Drawing on Science, Technology, and Society (STS) frameworks, specifically Actor-Network Theory and Langdon Winner's concept of Forms of Life, the first chapter traces how notifications produce a Form of Life organized around continuous responsiveness, in which incoming information appears as a pending demand, silence carries new moral weight, and the capacity for self-determined availability is structurally foreclosed. When we think of birds, we think of flight. Because of this, scientific research often focuses on how birds evolved flight and how their wings function during flight. However, not all birds can fly or fly well, as wings wax and wane on developmental, seasonal, and evolutionary time scales (Dial and Heers 2021). Consequently, rudimentary wings can be found in developing birds, secondarily flightless or semiflightless birds, birds that undergo simultaneous molts, and extinct theropods with “protowings” (structures that preceded fully functional wings). This thesis applies just war theory to Suzanne Collins's The Hunger Games trilogy, arguing that while the districts' rebellion satisfies the principles of jus ad bellum (justice in going to war), it systematically violates jus in bello (justice in the conduct of war) and jus post bellum (justice after war), and ultimately replicates the oppressive structures of the Capitol it sought to overthrow.

The U.S. social welfare system includes programs aiming to increase access to nutritious food to reduce nutrition insecurity. However, studies suggest that immigrants continue to face disproportionate risks of nutrition insecurity and may face barriers to enrollment due to legal status. This study, using secondary data from the 2023 California Health Interview Survey, examines the associations between food stamp participation, food insecurity, and clinical diagnosis of diabetes among adult U.S.-born, naturalized, and non-citizen adults in California. The findings suggest that those enrolled in food stamps are more likely to report food insecurity than those who are not enrolled, and that …

This quality improvement project evaluated the impact of a teach-back refresher course on nurses’ discharge education practices within an inpatient adolescent behavioral health setting. Nurses participated in refresher training and completed pre- and post-intervention surveys, while patient surveys assessed discharge understanding and readiness. Findings demonstrated positive patient satisfaction, understanding of discharge instructions, and confidence managing care at home. Ongoing workflow and communication barriers highlighted the need for continued staff development and reinforcement of teach-back to support consistent discharge education practices and improve transitional care outcomes.

Background: Post-stroke depression (PSD) is a common complication following stroke and is associated with poor rehabilitation, reduced quality of life, increased rehospitalization, and higher mortality. PSD remains underrecognized and undertreated due to limited emotional health education during discharge planning. Objective: This quality improvement project evaluated whether video-based education improved stroke survivors’ knowledge of PSD, coping strategies, and available healthcare resources before hospital discharge. This case study presents a 40-year-old female in for an annual echocardiogram. Diagnostic evaluation included a transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE), cardiac CT, MRI, and genetic testing. Echocardiographic findings demonstrated prominent trabeculation consistent with left ventricular non-compaction (LVNC). Cardiac function was otherwise normal with an ejection fraction of 55% and no hemodynamically significant valvular heart disease. Cardiac CT further supported the diagnosis by revealing prominent right-sided trabeculi. Despite these structural abnormalities, the patient remained fairly asymptomatic with management consisting of routine TTE every 6-12 months and a 14-day Holter patch to monitor for arrhythmias. The liver is the most common site for metastatic spread of colorectal cancer and contributes significantly to cancer-related morbidity and mortality worldwide. Patients with colorectal cancer are likely to develop liver metastases within the first few years of diagnosis. This case study presents a 58-year-old female who underwent a liver ultrasound examination following a prior computed tomography finding of liver metastasis from colorectal cancer. The ultrasound further demonstrated the extensive spread of cancer throughout the liver using 2D grayscale and Doppler imaging. Acute renal infarction is a rare and frequently misdiagnosed condition that often presents with nonspecific abdominal or left flank pain. Renal infarction is commonly associated with cardioembolic etiologies, making echocardiography evaluation essential. In the case presented, a 60-year-old male had presented with a sudden onset of left flank pain, and a computed tomography (CT) confirmed renal infarction. A transthoracic echocardiogram was performed to assess cardiac structures, function, and potential intracardiac thrombus. This report describes the case of a 31-year-old postpartum woman with a six-month history of abdominal pain and bloating. This case highlights the limitations of imaging modalities in the evaluation of large lesions. A focused abdominal ultrasound examination was performed, revealing an intra-abdominal vascular mass.
