Justice For Animals In Climate Change Integrated Assessment Models, Bob Fischer, Avram Hiller

Philosophy Faculty Publications and Presentations

Integrated assessment models (IAMs) exclude individual non-human animal welfare, despite clear evidence that climate change will harm billions of animals through habitat loss, extreme weather, and ecosystem disruption. We argue that this is a significant moral oversight. Further, incorporating animal welfare into IAMs is technically feasible, using traditional economic methods or novel ones. Crucially, accounting for animal welfare in IAMs need not undermine considerations of justice for humans.

Handwritten Opinion. This non-payment proceeding involved a tenant's motion for summary judgment based on rent-impairing violations. The court granted the tenant's motion, finding a rent-impairing violation under MDL § 302-a and awarding a 100% rent abatement for arrears accruing after July 2024. The tenant had properly pleaded the defense and deposited the rent amount, satisfying MDL § 302-a(3)(c). Despite the landlord's self-serving affidavit, HPD violation reports showed the condition remained uncorrected for over six months, warranting the abatement. The tenant's request for attorney's fees was denied as they were not the prevailing party and lacked a lease clause.

This paper evaluates Sand Compaction Pile (SCP) and Dynamic Compaction (DC) methods for enhancing soft soil in the Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) project. Targeted interventions were required for the stratified soil profile, consisting of liquefiable sand (3–5 m thick) over soft clay (SPT ∼5): dynamic compaction for densifying the sand layer and soil-cement piles for stabilizing the underlying clay. Post-treatment Standard Penetration Test (SPT) values indicated that DC significantly improved the sand layer (SPT rose to 15–25) while SCP effectively strengthened the clay (SPT increased to 8–12). Discovery And Characterization Of A Novel Pseudomonas Phage Of A New Genus

Background: Bacteriophages exhibit great diversity and are classically divided into lytic and temperate lifestyles. Commonly, bioinformatics is used to predict the temperate lifestyle. As the nosocomial pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa is common in freshwater, this biome represents an ideal location for the discovery of Pseudomonas phages.

Materials and methods: We characterized a genetically distinct species of Pseudomonas phage using next-generation sequencing and conventional microbiological methods. We characterized its lifestyle by purifying infected colonies and identifying persistent phage production.

Results: Genetics revealed a phage of a novel genus. Characterization showed a narrow host range and bioinformatics suggested a lytic lifestyle. Experimental data …

Due to the significantly increasing impacts of urban heat, cities are seeking to expand tree canopy, parks and other forms of greenery to reduce temperatures. Despite these efforts, few studies have examined the relationship between neighborhood-scale thermal conditions and changes in green spaces. The present study drew on high-resolution, near-surface air temperature measurements in 33 U.S. cities to answer two research questions: (1) to what extent did these cities’ greenery change from 2013 to 2022? and (2) did these study areas have an increase in greenery within neighborhoods exhibiting the hottest air temperatures? Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are capable of initiating tumour development and causing recurrence after treatment. The objective of this study was to determine the miRNAs, downstream target mRNAs, and signalling pathways in CSCs isolated from doxorubicin-sensitive and doxorubicin-resistant canine mammary adenocarcinoma cell lines. MicroRNA expression was profiled using Agilent SurePrint^® microarrays. MicroRNA data were analyzed using Agilent GeneSpring^® software, and TargetScan and WikiPathways were used to identify genes and pathways targeted by the differentially expressed miRNAs. This study developed rapid detection of Megalocytivirus using visual and real-time loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assays. The primer was designed with the major capsid protein gene of Megalocytivirus, including red sea bream iridovirus (RSIV), infectious spleen and kidney necrosis virus (ISKNV), and turbot reddish body iridovirus (TRBIV). The visual and real-time LAMP assays were evaluated using DNA extracted from symptomatic betta fish that tested negative for Megalocytivirus by the broad-range PCR assay, as well as a chemically synthesized Megalocytivirus DNA template. This article aims to test and compare different statistical methods applied to literary texts in order to measure the lexical proximity between two texts of a corpus. The Hyperbase functions will be tested, the measurement of the "intertextual distance" which is based on Jaccard's indices and Labbé's method but also the evaluation of the "lexical connection". The tree analysis, which highlights the classification hierarchy of texts, will be used to present the distribution of high and low frequencies as a criterion of differentiation. Then, we shall distinguish three functions of the proper noun: the reference function, the function vocative and the function of appointment. We shall present, finally, a thematic classification of the proper nouns appearing in the corpus of the romantic works of Maupassant, supplied by the Hyperbase software.

Objective: To analyze the most cited plastic surgery articles from Saudi Arabia, focusing on publication trends, leading contributors, collaboration patterns, and thematic areas.

Methods: We conducted a bibliometric analysis using the Web of Science Core Collection (1990–2025). Keywords covering plastic surgery subfields were combined with geographic identifiers (“Saudi Arabia,” “KSA,” “Kingdom of Saudi Arabia”) using Boolean operators. Only English-language original and review articles were included. Citation metrics, authorship networks, and keyword co-occurrence were analyzed with VOSviewer and the bibliometrix R package.

Method: A retrospective record-based cross-sectional study was performed evaluating data of all consecutive adult patients who had CT and bronchoscopies performed in a period of 2 years (between Jan. 2023 to Jan. 2025).
