The Vipeholm Experiments: A Case Study Of Unethical Dental Research, Lainie Ross Md, Phd

Modern-day research ethics training often begins with a discussion of the medical research atrocities committed by Nazi health care professionals and the resulting 10-principle Nuremberg Code, which is often considered to be the beginning of modern-day medical research regulations. It is occasionally mentioned that Nazi dentists also conducted unethical research in the concentration camps, and a few were brought to trial. In this manuscript, I compare two studies (one medical and one dental) conducted after World War II that violated the Nuremberg Code.

The digital transformation of higher education institutions (HEIs) has introduced unprecedented connectivity and operational efficiency, but it has also heightened their exposure to cyber threats. South African HEIs, in particular, face increasing vulnerability due to their reliance on technology, openness, and diverse user communities. This study examines the influence of the institutional cybersecurity environment on employee cybersecurity-compliant behaviour (CCB), emphasising the critical roles of awareness, policy engagement, and experience. This article examines how a sixth-grade pathways course at Kamehameha Schools in Hawai‘i leveraged Game-Based Learning (GBL) and Indigenous knowledge to foster student agency, creativity, and environmental stewardship. Designed and taught by school librarian Patricia Louis with support from a multidisciplinary instructional team, the Nā Lawai‘a Hawai‘i (Fishing, Hawaiian Style) elective engaged students in researching the ‘Ama‘ama (Hawaiian striped mullet) and the ecological challenges it faces, then translating their learning into the design of a board game, ‘Ama‘ama Escape. Can Palm Logs Float? Evaluating The Physical Viability Of Raft Transport For Rapa Nui Moai, Carl Philipp Lipo, Terry L. Hunt

Recent suggestions that palm log rafts may have transported moai statues on Rapa Nui require evaluation of whether fresh palm wood can provide sufficient buoyancy for multi-ton cargo. This analysis integrates experimental flotation tests, structural analyses of palm stem anatomy, and buoyancy calculations using modern palm analogs to reconstruct the extinct Rapa Nui palm. Fresh palm logs sink when placed in water because of their internal structure: stems consist of approximately 20% liquid by volume, contained within thousands of water-filled vascular tubes, surrounded by a thin, brittle cortex. This yields effective densities of 800-1,200 kg/m³ that approach or exceed seawater …

This dissertation in practice examined whether a targeted professional learning   intervention could shift school leaders’ use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) from efficiency-oriented tasks toward innovation-oriented strategic problem solving. AI is typically adopted to accelerate existing routines, which can deepen “cognitive debt” by reinforcing ineffective practices rather than improving systems. This study advanced a “cognitive equity” frame, positioning AI as a tool that can expand principals’ cognitive capacity to address complex problems and lead adaptive change. Managers confronting important strategic decisions often receive diagnostic information sequentially over time. As new information becomes available, they may need to update their understanding of the situation and possibly revise their preferences. During a decision, as a preference develops for one alternative course of action, a nonconscious goal of maintaining consistency between that preference, however tentative, and the new information can lead to an interpretation of that information so as to support the current preference. The Fair Chance at a Bright Smile (FCAABS) program represents a humanistic, community- centered approach to dentistry that redefines access, education, and dignity in oral health. Developed and refined through a year-long pilot partnership with the San Francisco Unified School District, FCAABS integrates preventive dental care, oral health education, and career exposure for students from pre-kindergarten through high school. This manuscript argues that beyond clinical outcomes, FCAABS reveals a deeper truth: oral health is intrinsically social, emotional, and moral. How are Black and Indigenous education in the US related? How are antiBlackness and settler colonialism interconnected? This essay addresses these questions, reexamining the history of one of the only US schools to educate both groups: Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute. To explore the contemporary legacies of Hampton, we bring together a race-centered historical methodology and Black and Indigenous studies perspectives. We argue that three enduring legacies – subhumanity, genocide and self-determination – with roots in the school itself frame the present, collective struggle for Black and Indigenous justice in education. Natural polysaccharides, such as chitosan, offer promising avenues for drug delivery due to their cytocompatibility and ability to interact with cell surfaces. However, the endothelial glycocalyx, a glycan-rich extracellular matrix, presents a barrier that must be navigated for effective intracellular delivery. This study investigates how cationic poly(glucosamine)-based polymers, functionalized with guanidinium or ammonium groups, interact with key glycocalyx components including hyaluronan (HA) and heparan sulfate (HS). We demonstrate that these cationic polymers form tunable biomolecular condensates with glycans, with stronger binding observed for sulfated glycans, HS and heparin, than unsulfated HA. Business is commonly understood as a parent discipline of tourism research, making business journals essential for epistemological inquiry. This paper reviews tourism literature in business journals, analysing the presence of Critical Tourism Studies, which addresses limitations of management-oriented approaches. Our analysis reveals limited engagement with Critical Tourism Studies in business journals, only 27% of reviewed articles aligning with its tenets. We propose a framework for Critical Tourism Business Studies that identifies knowledge gaps and highlights future directions for scholars publishing tourism-related topics in business journals. Evaluating The Role Of Bank Specific, Macroeconomic, And Institutional Factors In Determining Banking Sector Performance: Evidence From South Asian Economies, Samia Nasreen, Mehwish Gulzar, Xuan-Hoa Nghiem, Saira Arsh

This study investigates the bank-specific, macroeconomic, and institutional factors affecting the performance of the banking sector specifically profitability and stability in South Asian countries from 2011 to 2020. Using a two-step system GMM estimation method on a balanced panel dataset, the study identifies key determinants, including bank size, operating expenses, economic growth, exchange rates, and economic freedom. Institutional factors, particularly corruption, significantly influence banking sector profitability and stability. The findings offer several policy recommendations to enhance banking sector performance in the region.

Re-Visiting The Debt–Output Nexus From The Perspectives Of Long-Term Trend And Short-Term Volatility: An Application Of The Threshold Model, Hong Chen, Diviya Narayan, Baljeet Singh

Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking

Using the Hamilton filter and the panel threshold model, this study provides new evidence of the threshold effects of debt on output in 14 Asia-Pacific countries over the period 2005 to 2019. In the long term, we found a threshold debt value of 73.5 percent of GDP, below which debt has a positive effect on GDP, and the positive effect turns negative when debt goes above the threshold level. In the short term, we noted that debt volatility reduces output volatility, and the impact is greater with larger negative fluctuations in debts. The findings have important policy implications.

The court credited the tenant's testimony that he received only a one-page renewal without the rider, bolstered by subpoenaed DHCR records showing the landlord's practice of omitting riders, and took judicial notice that a single first-class stamp covers only up to one ounce — insufficient to cover the weight of two copies of a renewal with the seven-page rider attached.

Design And Functionalization Of A Hierarchical Cu-Btc/Zeolite A4 Composite With Tannic Acid For High-Performance Heavy Metal Removal: Synergistic Adsorption Mechanisms, Kinetic Insights, And Reusability Evaluation, Samar A. Salim

This study presents the development of a novel multifunctional adsorbent Cu-BTC (HKUST-1)/Zeolite A4 composite functionalized with tannic acid—for the efficient removal of toxic heavy metal ions (Pb²⁺, Cd²⁺, Cr(VI)) from aqueous solutions. The composite was synthesized via a solvothermal process and systematically characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM-EDS, and BET surface area analysis. The resulting material exhibited a high specific surface area (1050 m²/g), a hierarchical pore structure, and a homogeneous distribution of active sites. Batch adsorption experiments revealed superior adsorption capacities of 220 mg/g for Pb²⁺, 180 mg/g for Cd²⁺, and 150 mg/g for Cr(VI) at pH 6, surpassing those …
