Preparing Undergraduate Students To Understand The Nutritional Difficulties Of Food Insecurity, Joanne Sullivan, Regina Subach

Journal of Dietetic Education

College students often face the unknown whether they are traditional or non-traditional students, yet not every college student faces the same question of how they will feed themselves throughout the year. This question is becoming increasingly familiar to college students as an average of 41% face food insecurity. Because federal assistance is inadequate, universities bear the responsibility of supporting students who have no other resources to combat food insecurity. The description of this educational teaching strategy focuses on providing nutrition educators with an innovative classroom assignment.

Objective: To examine graduate dietetics students’ experiences completing a public policy course outside of their discipline. Methods: Participants were 40 graduate dietetics students at a university in the Western United States. At the conclusion of a public policy course offered through another department, students completed online surveys with fixed-response and open-ended items. Quantitative data were analyzed using paired t tests, and qualitative responses were examined using codebook thematic analysis. Results: Three themes included (1) Recognizing the interconnection between policy and dietetics practice, (2) From policy hesitancy to policy understanding; and (3) Humanizing policy: public policy and holistic client care. Students (N = 135) pursuing degrees in health-focused programs participated in an interprofessional virtual journal club during the spring semesters of 2022 and 2023. The journal club was integrated into multiple courses and facilitated through the university’s learning management system and a web conferencing platform. Students applied the 2016 Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) Core Competencies throughout the activity. The journal club included four pre-selected articles on ethics in healthcare, and students developed one discussion question per article to guide synchronous virtual discussions. The purpose of this study was to compare differences in Nutrition Care Process (NCP) confidence and documentation quality across two different undergraduate student cohorts. This quasi-experimental trial was conducted with n = 29 total undergraduate dietetic students (2023 cohort), then compared with results from the previous years’ (2022) cohort (n = 43). NCP confidence was measured before and after students completed traditional case studies (time 1 and time 2) and after completing an ANDHII case study using an electronic and interactive NCP documentation platform (time 3) for each cohort, then compared between cohorts. The 20 March 2019 Acıpayam earthquake (Mw 5.7) offers a valuable opportunity to examine the complex seismotectonic behavior of the Fethiye-Burdur Fault Zone (FBFZ), a transtensional structure in southwestern Türkiye. This study integrates field observations and focal mechanism data with differential interferometric synthetic aperture radar (DInSAR) analysis to reassess the geometry of the causative fault. In contrast to previously proposed northeast-dipping blind fault models, the data obtained in this study indicate a southwest-dipping listric normal-fault system centered on the Yeniköy Fault, projecting beneath alluvial cover. Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The magnesite deposit of the Edige region in Ankara-Elmadağ District of Türkiye is hosted in serpentinite/serpentinized ultramafic rocks, which are mainly harzburgite and dunite. Mineralogical and petrographic studies have shown that ultramafic rocks are composed of serpentine, olivine, and pyroxene with serpentinization preceding magnesite formation. The X-ray diffraction results reveal that dolomite, quartz, calcite, and clay minerals are the main minerals in magnesite samples from serpentinite/serpentinized ultramafic units. Olivine, pyroxene, serpentine, chromite, and iron oxide minerals are also present. Scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectrometry results show that magnesite in rhombohedral and cryptocrystalline forms is the dominant mineral accompanied …

Remote sensing enables large-scale, image-based assessments of river dynamics, offering new opportunities for hydrological monitoring. We present a publicly available dataset consisting of 281,024 satellite and aerial images of U.S. rivers, constructed using an Application Programming Interface (API) and the U.S. Geological Survey’s National Hydrography Dataset. The dataset includes images, primary keys, and ancillary geospatial information. We use a manually labeled subset of the images to train models for detecting rapids, defined as areas where high velocity and turbulence lead to a wavy, rough, or even broken water surface visible in the imagery. Background/Objectives: Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) can enhance post-stroke aphasia recovery. The right Inferior Frontal Gyrus is the most common target in rTMS studies for inhibitory stimulation. However, lexicosemantic processes involve a large brain network including the Anterior Temporal Lobe (ATL). We hypothesize that rTMS targeting the ATL will improve lexicosemantic impairments in people with post-stroke aphasia.
