Bioerosion And Encrustation As Paleoenvironmental Indicators In Upper Cretaceous Corals, Aruma Formation, Saudi Arabia, Abdelbaset S. El-Sorogy, Huriye Demi̇rcan, Khaled Al-Kahtany, Taisser Zumlot, Talal Alharbi, Mohamed Tawfik

This study documents and interprets bioerosion and encrustation traces on Upper Cretaceous scleractinian corals from the Hajajah Member of the Aruma Formation in northern Khashm Buwaibiyat, central Saudi Arabia. Fieldwork in 2023 and 2024 involved detailed bed-by-bed stratigraphic logging, ichnological assessment, and fossil collection across marl and limestone units. A total of 213 coral specimens with bioerosional features were analyzed, leading to the identification of 10 ichnospecies across 5 ichnogenera, including Gastrochaenolites, Entobia, Caulostrepsis, Rogerella, and Labyrintichnus. These traces reflect a range of ethological categories, primarily domichnia, indicating permanent dwelling structures by polychaetes, sponges, bivalves, barnacles, and crustaceans. The Hajajah …

Meet Me At The Rock: The Behavioral Patterns Of Collective Violence In Prison, Hayden P. Smith

This study explores the behavioral dynamics of collective violence in prisons, focusing on the largest prison riot in the United States in twenty-five years at Lee Correctional Institution, using an ethnographic approach and Crime Script Analysis (CSA). The sample consisted of twenty-five incarcerated men, predominantly African American, aged 25 to 61, with extensive incarceration histories, experiences of violence, and influencer status within the prison community. It identifies key factors such as situational awareness, gang affiliations, and chronic understaffing that escalate violence. Themes include the "pressure cooker" environment, elevated tensions, and stages of confrontation, escalation, and de-escalation. A key finding is …

Since the summer of 2020, police agencies across the United States have continued to experience police staffing shortages. The consequences of understaffed police agencies are well studied, but little is known about whether the public is aware of the staffing problem and its consequences for public safety and police behavior. This study presents a pre-registered factorial survey experiment to 3105 US adults, varying the information respondents see on the consequences of staffing shortages (e.g., public safety, police behavior) and the messenger of this information (e.g., police chief, mayor). Parties to the Antarctic Treaty have set Antarctica aside for peace, scientific research, and environmental protection. However, they have yet to take concrete actions to protect Antarctica’s wilderness values as agreed under the 1991 Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty. Meanwhile, pristine areas that are free from human interference are declining as human activity escalates. This study examines perceptions of Antarctic wilderness through the lens of integral ecology. Data from 1,640 people and 16 study populations were extracted from four published studies. Hydroxyapatite (HAp) is an effective inorganic gene delivery carrier due to its ability to transport genetic cargo across cell membranes, protect it from proteolysis, and enable escape from late endosomes via pH-controlled dissolution. However, its transfection efficiency remains lower than that of viral agents, prompting studies of hybrids with cationic molecules or phases to enhance the gene delivery performance. This study reports on the synthesis of HAp in regular and reverse micellar regions of a ternary microemulsion system composed of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), 1-hexanol and water. Beyond Free Trade: Adam Smith On Slavery And Implications For American Capitalism, Amy Ehinomen Eremionkhale, Dollie Davis, Alexandra Digby

Contemporary invocations of Adam Smith in policy debates frequently overlook his opposition to slavery and discriminatory institutions. This paper examines how Smith’s integrated economic and moral critique of slavery provides a framework for analyzing current debates over racial equity, particularly regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs and affirmative action in higher education. Smith argued that discriminatory institutions fundamentally undermined “perfect liberty” and market prosperity. The analysis reveals a “paradox of selective intervention” where government action to address racial inequalities faces resistance while interventions perpetuating existing hierarchies remain unchallenged. A genuinely Smi- thian approach would recognize addressing systemic racial inequality …

This qualitative study examined the troubling intersection of parental separation, domestic violence and paternal filicide, issues that profoundly challenge societal and legal frameworks. Although domestic violence and marital dissolution are recognized risk factors for child maltreatment, their role in paternal filicide, specifically when motivated by parental separation, has been understudied. Using a purposeful and criterion-based sampling strategy, cases were drawn from the Center for Judicial Excellence database of children murdered during divorce, parental separation, and child custody disputes. BACKGROUND: Cysteine-cysteine chemokine receptors 2 (CCR2) and 5 (CCR5) contribute to immune suppression in tumor microenvironments. CCR2 and CCR5 antagonists have demonstrated antitumor activity in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) and colorectal cancer (CRC), respectively. This phase 1b/2, open-label study evaluated BMS-813160, a CCR2/5 dual antagonist, in combination with chemotherapy±nivolumab in advanced PDAC or metastatic CRC.

METHODS: Part 1 included patients with metastatic untreated (first-line (1L)) PDAC, 1L CRC, or previously treated (second or third line (2/3L)) microsatellite stable (MSS) CRC. Patients received 2 weeks of BMS-813160 monotherapy (300 mg two times a day, 600 mg once daily, 300 mg once …

Transforming waste polymers into materials with improved properties offers a compelling strategy for advancing the sustainable use of polymers, echoing the Chinese proverb: “Blue comes from indigo but surpasses it in blueness.” Herein, we report a photo-oxidative deconstruction and upcycling method for unsaturated rubber waste. Under 390 nm LED irradiation at room temperature, in the presence of a nitroarene oxidant, diverse unsaturated polymers─including natural rubber, polybutadiene, nitrile rubber, styrene–butadiene rubber, and even cross-linked nitrile gloves─are selectively converted into carbonyl-terminated oligomers. The aldehyde-functionalized products are cross-linked via dynamic imine chemistry with p-phenylenediamine to yield reprocessable elastomers with markedly improved tensile strength …
