Infantile Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension: Case Report Of An 8-Month-Old Child, Deniz Yasar, Cihan İnan, Bilge Akkaya, Nesrin Ceylan, Berna Ucan, Nilden Tuygun
Journal of Pediatric Neurology
Background: Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH), a clinical disorder also known as pseudotumor cerebri, is characterized by increased intracranial pressure of unknown causes. Although it is most commonly observed in young obese women, IIH can also occur in the pediatric population; however, it is exceptionally rare in infancy. Infants do not typically exhibit characteristic signs and symptoms of IIH, making it challenging to diagnose. Additionally, treatment modalities for this disease remain uncertain. Case Description: We report a 8-month-old female admitted to the pediatric emergency department with IIH, to report and emphasize our approach. Our patient presented initially with fever, vomiting and …

Severe Hypoplasia/Aplasia Of The Medullary Arcuate Nucleus In A Further Patient With Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, Elvio Della Giustina, Tiziana Salviato, Luca Fabbiani, Luciano Mancini, Antonino Maiorana, Luca Reggiani Bonetti
Journal of Pediatric Neurology
The aim of this study was to verify and confirm the close correlation between the absence of the medullary arcuate nucleus and sudden death in a 4-month-old infant. Careful neuropathological examination of the cerebral hemispheres, basal ganglia and cerebellum was irrelevant to the death. The brainstem region, normally occupied by the nuclei was cut into several serial sections so as not to lose any details. The largest median part of the medullary arcuate nucleus was completely absent and only very small groups of residual neurons in its most lateral part were still detectable; the rest of the brainstem showed no …

Area Postrema Syndrome As The Onset Of Neuromyelitis Optica In A Pediatric Patient: Case Report, Juan Martín Mancera-Alzate, Taina Yubelys Brito Hurtado, Christian Andrés Rojas Ceron
Journal of Pediatric Neurology
Introduction: Area postrema syndrome, characterized by nausea, emesis, and persistent hiccups can be initial manifestation of demyelinating diseases of the central nervous system. Clinical case: we report a 4-year-old girl who presented with intractable vomiting that was noted to have signs of demyelination in the area postrema. MRI spine revealed longitudinally extensive myelitis in the cervical and thoracic spine. Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder was suspected. Serum anti-aquaporin 4 antibodies were positive. Oligoclonal bands in cerebrospinal fluid were negative. Conclusion: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders are extremely rare in the pediatric population, this being the second case reported in Colombia. . It’s …

Opsoclonus In Children: Diagnosis, Etiology And Ophthalmologic Assessment Of Patients At A Tertiary Children’S Hospital, Melissa Yuan, Jacqueline Jeon-Chapman, Tais Estrela, Ryan Gise
Journal of Pediatric Neurology
Introduction: Opsoclonus is often associated with serious neurologic and paraneoplastic pathology. Pediatric ophthalmologists play an important role in its diagnosis. Methods: Retrospective chart review of patients seen for suspicion of opsoclonus. Results: 259 patients were identified for whom opsoclonus was suspected, of which 83 (32%) were found to be true opsoclonus. The ophthalmology consultation changed the course of workup in 44 of the 117 patients that received ophthalmologic evaluation (38%). 16 (9%) were found to have primary ophthalmic diagnoses. Of the 83 children with opsoclonus, 36 (43%) had paraneoplastic opsoclonus-myoclonus-ataxia syndrome (OMAS), 32 (39%) had non-paraneoplastic OMAS, 1 (1.2%) had …
