Inferences Training Affects Memory, Rumination, And Mood, B. Perlman, N. Mor, Y. Wisney Jacobinski, A. Doron Zakon, N. Avirbach, Paula T. Hertel

Psychology Faculty Research

Making negative inferences for negative events, ruminating about them, and retrieving negative aspects of memories have all been associated with depression. However, the causal mechanisms that link negative inferences to negative mood and the interplay between inferences, rumination, and memory have not been explored. In the current study, we used a cognitive-bias modification (CBM) procedure to train causal inferences and assessed training effects on ruminative thinking, memory, and negative mood among people with varying levels of depression. Training had immediate effects on negative mood and rumination but not after recall of a negative autobiographical memory. Note that training affected memory: …

Oncology Providers Barriers To Providing Quality Healthcare Services For Caribbean Women Of Color With Breast Cancer, Michelle Charmaine Garcia Jan 2022

Oncology Providers Barriers To Providing Quality Healthcare Services For Caribbean Women Of Color With Breast Cancer, Michelle Charmaine Garcia

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Breast cancer is a global public health issue, and oncology healthcare providers (OHPs’) play a pivotal role in ensuring access to cancer care for their patient population. Caribbean women of color in the United States have the highest death rate of any racial or ethnic group. Strategies have been introduced to reduce this gap, and they still have not addressed the needs of Caribbean women of color, who tend to be diagnosed after developing late-stage breast cancer. No previous studies have explored OHPs' perceptions and lived experiences regarding barriers to healthcare service delivery and access for Caribbean women of color …

Psychiatric And Neuropsychological Sequelae Of Herpes Simplex Encephalitis, Carla F. Cabrera, Charles J. Golden Jan 2022

Psychiatric And Neuropsychological Sequelae Of Herpes Simplex Encephalitis, Carla F. Cabrera, Charles J. Golden

Archives of Assessment Psychology

Herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE) is caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV), often from the Type 1 (HSV-1) viral infection. This neurotropic double-stranded DNA virus impairs the integrity and permeability of the blood-brain barrier, allowing the virus to enter the brain. In several studies, HSV-1 impacts the temporal lobe, frontal lobe, and limbic system, leading to brain damage. While significant progress has occurred in understanding this infection, clinicians should be vigilant for acute and chronic complications associated with HSE, such as autoimmune encephalitis, differential diagnoses, and psychological disorders. A growing body of literature focuses on the evidence of an association …

Revisiting The Need For Age-Based Norms In Personality Assessment Using The Cleveland Adaptive Personality Questionnaire, Amir M. Poreh, Jennifer B. Levin Jan 2022

Revisiting The Need For Age-Based Norms In Personality Assessment Using The Cleveland Adaptive Personality Questionnaire, Amir M. Poreh, Jennifer B. Levin

Archives of Assessment Psychology

The need for age-based norms in personality assessment is of great interest given the trend of adjusting for demographic variables in neurocognitive evaluations. We examined the need for age-based norms using the Cleveland Adaptive Personality Questionnaire (CAPQ; Poreh & Levin, 2019) in 1,646 individuals ages 25 to 95 years (M = 44.5, SD = 16.1). Results showed that scores on the CAPQ clinical scales linearly declined across the lifespan in conjunction with a linear increase in measures of social desirability. Power analysis indicated that the CAPQ Avoidant scale produced the most significant effect, followed by a moderate effect for the …

Assessing Aggressivity With The Comprehensive System-Revised, Part I: The Rorschach Gacono & Meloy Extended Aggression Scores: An Updated Review, Carl B. Gacono, Jason M. Smith Jan 2022

Assessing Aggressivity With The Comprehensive System-Revised, Part I: The Rorschach Gacono & Meloy Extended Aggression Scores: An Updated Review, Carl B. Gacono, Jason M. Smith

Archives of Assessment Psychology

Determining a patient's aggressivity is a function of assessing multiple factors, including personality vulnerabilities, past behaviors, and potential future circumstances. Evaluating the nature and predominance of aggressive drive, impulse control, affect lability, inhibitory mechanisms, cognitive deficits, and conscious and unconscious attitudes (e.g., use of devaluation; the presence of internal identifications and imagery) is essential. All of these issues have correlates in the Comprehensive System (CS; Exner, 2003; also CS-R; Fontan & Andronikof, 2022) and supplemental Rorschach data (primitive defenses: Cooper et al., 1988; Lerner & Lerner, 1980; object relations phenomena: Kwawer, 1980; extended aggression scores: Gacono & Meloy, 1994). Pre-Oedipal …

Assessing Aggressivity With The Comprehensive System-Revised, Part Ii: The Gacono Aggressivity Cluster (Gac), Carl B. Gacono, Jason M. Smith

Archives of Assessment Psychology

The coding of Rorschach aggressive imagery, while essential, is not sufficient for assessing aggressivity. This evaluation requires an analysis of multiple personality domains and functions, such as nature and predominance of aggressive drive, impulse control, affect lability, inhibitory mechanisms, cognitive deficits, and conscious and unconscious attitudes (e.g., use of devaluation; internal identifications & imagery; Finney, 1955; Rose & Bitter, 1980). As personality attributes correlate with Rorschach variables and indices, the Rorschach contributes to identifying and confirming the nature and quality of an individual’s vulnerabilities. Ultimately, however, a determination of an individual's aggressivity must be considered not only through the lens …

Nurses, Politics And Policy: Moving A Critical Initiative Forward Through Education, Inspiration And Motivation For Political Activity, Elizabeth Clark

Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses

Texas has the highest rate of uninsured and underserved residents in the United States. Texas also is one of the most restricted states for advanced practice registered nurses (APRN) to practice. As shown in other states, one means of obtaining full practice authority for APRNs is by gaining more of a nursing presence in the legislature. This project created a program to educate, motivate and inspire Texas nurses for political involvement. The project was completed in collaboration with the Texas Nurses Association. 78 nurses participated in surveys focusing on nurses’ attitudes and opinions, knowledge level, mental preparedness for political involvement …

Assessing Risk For Right Heart Failure After Left Ventricular Assist Device Implantation, Mary-Ann Lombardi Cyr Jan 2022

Assessing Risk For Right Heart Failure After Left Ventricular Assist Device Implantation, Mary-Ann Lombardi Cyr

Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses

The lives of more than six million people in the United States are negatively impacted by the diagnosis of Advanced Heart Failure. Financial burden, repeated hospitalizations, and declining quality of life account for poor outcomes. Implantation of a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) has offered the promise of improved financial, clinical, and functional outcomes for those awaiting or ineligible for heart transplantation. Right Heart Failure (RHF), however, threatens positive outcomes as it remains the leading cause of mortality and morbidity following LVAD placement. Despite extensive research, there is no comprehensive tool for RHF risk assessment and stratification for this population. …

Enhancing The Assessment Of Suicidal Ideation In The Long-Term Care Environment: A Quality Improvement Project, Carissa Ann Tufano Jan 2022

Enhancing The Assessment Of Suicidal Ideation In The Long-Term Care Environment: A Quality Improvement Project, Carissa Ann Tufano

Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses

Abstract Despite high rates of depression and risk factors for suicide, there is a knowledge deficit and lack of protocol surrounding the assessment of suicidal ideation in the long-term care setting. Although studies examining suicide in the long-term care setting are lacking, the prevalence of suicidal ideation is high. This DNP quality improvement project addressed this problem by creating a suicide assessment and management inservice for frontline clinical staff at a skilled nursing facility in Connecticut. The inservice integrated use of an adapted suicide assessment algorithm and a suicide screening tool, the P4 Screener. A SAMHSA toolkit was utilized as …

The Application Of Poka-Yoke To Administration Functions Within An Organisation., Craig Dixon Woodward Jan 2022

The Application Of Poka-Yoke To Administration Functions Within An Organisation., Craig Dixon Woodward

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Poka-yoke is a quality assurance technique developed by Shigeo Shingo in the 1960s. It is based on the theory that errors and defects have a cause and effect relationship. A defect is purely the effect of an error and by employing poka-yoke devices within processes to remove errors, defects can also be eliminated. The use of poka-yoke has made a significant contribution to organisations' ability to effectively control their core manufacturing processes but little attention has been given to the mistake-proofing of the surrounding administration or support processes. This thesis provides a definition of "administration" and justifies the need for …

Buckling Behaviour Of Cold-Formed Steel Beams With Web Perforations, Nanting Yu Jan 2022

Buckling Behaviour Of Cold-Formed Steel Beams With Web Perforations, Nanting Yu

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Cold-formed steel (CFS) members are widely used in the constructional industry, because CFS has high strength-to-weight ratio and can be easily fabricated into different shapes. In order to accommodate services like electric wires and pipelines, perforations are commonly punched into the web of CFS beams. However, the appearance of web openings may reduce the properties of the cross section and hence change the stress distribution along the longitude axis. As a result, the perforated cold-formed steel (PCFS) beam is more susceptible to lateral-torsional buckling. For specific cross sections controlled by distortional buckling, the restraint of web on the flange weakens …

Machine Learning-Based Exploration Of Blood-Based Biomarkers For Alzheimer’S Disease Diagnosis, Chima Stanley Eke Jan 2022

Machine Learning-Based Exploration Of Blood-Based Biomarkers For Alzheimer’S Disease Diagnosis, Chima Stanley Eke

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease with typical clinical symptoms in the form of progressive cognitive impairment and memory loss. To facilitate early diagnosis of AD and a greater understanding of the mechanisms underlying its clinical expression, the use of biomarkers is necessary. Furthermore, it is believed that biomarkers provide a more objective and accessible means of diagnosis. Currently, established biomarkers include neuroimaging markers, such as those based on positron emission tomography (PET), and biochemical markers such as cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) markers. However, neuroimaging is expensive and may not be widely available and CSF testing is invasive. Blood-based biomarkers …

Graphene Based Electrochemical Biosensors For The Detection Of Blood Biomarkers Of Alzheimer’S Disease, Jagriti Sethi Jan 2022

Graphene Based Electrochemical Biosensors For The Detection Of Blood Biomarkers Of Alzheimer’S Disease, Jagriti Sethi

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects millions of people around the world with no available treatments to cure, reverse or even slow down the disease progression. Detection of AD in the early stages, before the massive neuronal loss, is key to developing disease-modifying treatments and preventive strategies. The current AD diagnosis is largely based on evaluation tests such as Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), imaging techniques such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Positron Emission Tomography (PET), and postmortem autopsies. It is expensive and only available at the later/severe stages when the brain of the patient is already damaged …

A Case For Openness – Book Publishing And The Role Of Amazon, Antje Kreutzmann-Gallasch, Simone Schroff Jan 2022

A Case For Openness – Book Publishing And The Role Of Amazon, Antje Kreutzmann-Gallasch, Simone Schroff

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

The presence of Amazon is ubiquitous, especially in the online bookstore and e-book market. The introduction of the “Kindle” further cemented Amazon’s dominant position and business model in the market, having negative implications for authors, publishers and consumers. Publishers have less control over setting the price to have access to Amazon’s customer base. This will affect the authors’ remuneration and attribution. On the other hand, Kindle users are locked-in consumers, limited to Amazon’s e-book offering. This not only affects consumer choice but also reinforces Amazon’s market power due to the significant network effects. The European Commission attempted to increase competition …

Peninsula Medical School

Introduction Recurrent pulmonary exacerbations lead to progressive lung damage in cystic fibrosis (CF). Inhaled medications (mucoactive agents and antibiotics) help prevent exacerbations, but objectively measured adherence is low. We investigated whether a multi-component (complex) self-management intervention to support adherence would reduce exacerbation rates over 12 months. Methods Between October 2017 and May 2018, adults with CF (aged ≥16 years; 19 UK centres) were randomised to the intervention (data-logging nebulisers, a digital platform and behavioural change sessions with trained clinical interventionists) or usual care (data-logging nebulisers). Outcomes included pulmonary exacerbations (primary outcome), objectively measured adherence, body mass index (BMI), lung function …

Nurses’ Role In Reducing Mental Health Stigma In Health Care, Angel Vivian Mbome

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Many patients with mental illness around the world face mental health-related stigma. Compared to other health care workers, nurses express the highest level of stigmatizing attitudes toward mentally ill patients. The purpose of this project was to change staff nurses’ attitudes in a long-term care facility by educating them on mental health stigma. The practice-focused question guiding this study was whether educating staff nurses on mental health stigma changed nurses’ attitudes and behavioral intentions towards people with mental illness. This project was guided by the constructivist theory of learning. Seventeen staff members voluntarily participated in a 30-minute nursing staff education …

Social Contagion's Impact On Decision-Making Among Millennial Parents Seeking A Christian School, Laura Alysson Farien

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Connections in a social network influence people in both positive and negative ways (Christakis & Fowler, 2009), and this study describes how connections in a virtual network affect school choice decision-making in a market heavily saturated with school choice options. This is a qualitative ethnographic study of millennial parents who experience social contagion across online platforms. Participants have at least one child enrolled in a private school in Shelby County, Tennessee. Social contagion is what flows between participants in a social network and influences decision-making (Christakis & Fowler). This study examined influence as the specific social contagion impacting school choice …

Premarital Counseling And Christianity: A Composition Of Couples Intuition And Understanding As It Relates To Marital Satisfaction, Sheila Delores Salley Jan 2022

Premarital Counseling And Christianity: A Composition Of Couples Intuition And Understanding As It Relates To Marital Satisfaction, Sheila Delores Salley

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Increasing divorce rates in the United States of America have resulted in Premarital Counseling (PMC) gaining grave popularity over the last couple of decades. There has been a proliferation of premarital counseling programs in the United States of America since the 1930s with a thrust toward building and sustaining satisfying marriages. Traditional premarital counseling programs focus on ensuring satisfaction once the couple is married; however, there is a significant gap in researching the impact of incorporating Christian values as a means of therapeutic intervention. This study involved eight Christian, African American, heterosexual couples who received Christian-based PMC (CPMC) and have …
