Species-Specific Interactions In Avian–Bryophyte Dispersal Networks, Matthew Chmielewski, Sarah Eppley Jan 2022

Species-Specific Interactions In Avian–Bryophyte Dispersal Networks, Matthew Chmielewski, Sarah Eppley

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Studies from seed plants have shown that animal dispersal fundamentally alters the success of plant dispersal, shaping community composition through time. Our understanding of this phenomenon in spore plants is comparatively limited. Though little is known about species-specific dispersal relationships between passerine birds and bryophytes, birds are particularly attractive as a potential bryophyte dispersal vector given their highly vagile nature as well as their association with bryophytes when foraging and building nests. We captured birds in Gifford Pinchot National Forest to sample their legs and tails for bryophyte propagules. We found 24 bryophyte species across 34 bird species. We examined …

Phylogenetics And Genetic Variation Of Heligmosomoides Thomomyos In Western Pocket Gophers (Thomomys Spp.), Malorri R. Hughes, Alexandra A. Gibson, Emily R. Wolfe, Cecily D. Bronson, Deborah A. Duffield

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The host specificities and systematics of North American Heligmosomoides species remain particularly uncertain. The primary aim of this study was to verify that a species described previously based only on morphology, H. thomomyos, from pocket gopher (Rodentia: Geomyidae) hosts in Oregon represented a monophyletic lineage. In order to address this aspect, as well as to further understand relationships and geographic patterns, we carried out phylogenetic, genetic diversity, and population dynamic analyses using partial 18S rRNA and COI mtDNA sequences of Heligmosomoides specimens. Phylogenetic analyses suggested that there are likely multiple Heligmosomoides species present in these hosts. This was supported by …

Spending All Your Money On Me: Influencer Marketing’S Impact On Engagement, Rebecca A. Vanmeter, Michael C. Peasley, Parker J. Woodroof

AMTP Proceedings 2022

Influencer marketing has been around for a few years and is rapidly approaching a $15 billion industry by 2022. In its nascency, the research is limited which investigates factors that substantiate the growth and popularity of advertising tools. In this study, we propose and explicate how two different types of influencers, namely mega- and macro-influencers, impact their audience's engagement with sponsored posts. Utilizing secondary data from more than 650 Instagram posts, our results suggest mega-influencers are able to mitigate the negative effect of utilizing various post attributes, including meta-tags and product prominence.

The Effects Of Shape-Taste Congruence On Product Evaluations, Jurui Zhang, Raymond Liu, Yufang Jin, Menglin Li

AMTP Proceedings 2022

The background design of a product presented online is important to attract consumers’ attention and further help them make proper judgments about the product. Although many studies have investigated factors of advertising background design, few focus on the effect of shape feature in the background on product evaluations. The present research investigates the influence of congruency between the shape in the background design and product taste perception on consumer product evaluations by using a pretest and three experiments. The results show that shape-taste congruency intensifies product evaluations with an increase evaluation of sweet-taste products and a decreases evaluation of sour-taste …

Money, Medals, And Championships: Politically Driven Conspiracy Of Silence, Model Development; Implications To Diversity And Inclusion., Ania Izabela Rynerzewska

AMTP Proceedings 2022

Athletic organizational image and reputation management often require careful consideration of values shared and enacted to create a flawless image with which many fans identify and often admire. However, under the cover of perfect brand image covered with medals, championship and glory, there is often a hidden world of abuse and active participation in silencing the victims to protect the image. This paper analyzes relatively recent cases of two sex scandals in sports: Jerry Sandusky case and Larry Nassar case. Both individuals held higher positions within their organizations’ network of supporters who participated in a conspiracy of silence. This paper …

Testimonios De Las Atravesadas: A Borderland Existence Of Women Of Color Faculty, Katherine S. Cho, Racheal M. Banda, Erica Fernandez, Brittany Aronson

Education: School of Education Faculty Publications and Other Works

The temporalities of COVID-19 and resultant economic crisis, along with increased visibility of white supremacy and anti-Blackness, have exacerbated the longstanding chal-lenges Women of Color (WOC) faculty experience, particu-larly around negotiating labor and navigating the academy. Through Anzaldúa's borderlands framework, and an inter-woven methodology of testimonios and pláticas, this paper's findings illuminate how the fixed, shifting, and messy bound-aries of academic work have, especially for WOC faculty working through COVID-19, violated the limits of the personal and professional, intruded into the homes as sacred spaces, and continued and expanded demands to provide labor. Institutions have placated these fraught borders with …

Perception Of Health Care Access In Rural Georgia: Findings From A Community Health Needs Assessment Survey, Elisa M. Childs, Tiffany R. Washington

Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association

Background: Limited access to health care services has been cited as a barrier to care for individuals who live in rural areas, contributing to significant health disparities in this population. While perception of services has been cited as a determinant of utilization of health services, it is unknown how perception of services influences health care access in rural areas. The paucity of studies specific to areas in the United States that are medically underserved, necessitated this study and its quantification of the issues that are relevant to individuals living in rural Georgia.

Methods: This study examined the perception of health …

Automating manufacturing systems can achieve competitive advantage leading to growth in profits through efficiency gains and other advantages including safety of workers and quality of produced products. However, without accurate specification there is no guarantee of realising return on investment. Automated systems are becoming more complex as the need for customisability and variability of products increases and can only be satisfied through flexibility of production processes. To aid companies in specifying automation and mitigate the risks of project failure an approach is needed that guides users choices. The aim of the research was to investigate approaches to specify automated manufacturing …

An Empirical Study Of The Effects Of Regulatory Systems On The Collection Of Late Payment Of Commercial Debts Owed To Micro And Small Businesses In The Uk, Ashley Mark Smith

Plymouth Business School Theses

Trust is the foundation of trade credit. Failure to pay on time affects the supplier’s business, causing stress and potential bankruptcy. Small businesses employ formal (solicitors, debt collectors, statutory demands) and informal (discounts, extended payment terms, violence) techniques to enforce payment. The Government has enacted measures requiring larger buyers to report their payment practices and has given businesses the right to claim interest, yet businesses are either unaware or do not use these provisions. The research phase of this thesis was conducted in 2018/19 and incorporated an initial survey with 74 respondents followed by a second survey with 250 respondents. …

Intimacy, Identity And Loyalty: Exploring The Mediation Pathways Towards Donor Loyalty And The Moderating Role Of Donor Identity Esteem, Dejie Kong

Plymouth Business School Theses

As the global economic and political situation is increasingly prominent, donor loyalty is one of the biggest challenges facing the charity sector in many countries today. Research in fundraising has shown that even a small improvement in donor loyalty can have a huge impact on charity income in the long term. Although marketing scholars have examined factors such as trust, commitment and satisfaction—the key to drive donor loyalty — the complex nature of donors’ underlying psychological processes toward donor loyalty remains unclear. This thesis aims to enhance our understanding of donor loyalty by studying the role of intimacy and donor …

An Evaluation Of Supply Lead Time In The Nigerian Oil Downstream Sector: A System Dynamic Approach, Mac-Daniel Uhuka

Plymouth Business School Theses

MAC-DANIEL UHUKA. AN EVALUATION OF SUPPLY LEAD TIME IN THE NIGERIAN OIL DOWNSTREAM SECTOR: A SYSTEM DYNAMIC APPROACH. This thesis presents a system dynamics (SD) approach for investigating the demand amplification problem, also known as the bullwhip effect, which has been studied extensively in the literature. The demand amplification occurs when supply chain moves upstream from the downstream. The problem of bullwhip effect can be costly and disruptive, and this is a problem supply chain managers normally seeks to minimise. The causes of bullwhip effect can be poor system design, poor policies, structure of the company and delays in material …

Investigating Employment In The Nigerian Offshore Oil And Gas Industry: Is Gender A Prerequisite?, Victor Olufunmilade Apiafi

Plymouth Business School Theses

This study evaluates the factors influencing the inclusion of females into the Nigerian offshore industry. After extensive literature reviews, it is concluded that there is a shortage of females employed in this industry due to the patriarchal nature of Nigerian society. Evidently, the patriarchal nature of this country influences the rate of inclusion of females into the Nigerian offshore industry. Patriarchy in the Nigerian society also influences gender roles, male domination and gender discrimination, resulting in the limited inclusion of females into the Nigerian offshore industry. In Nigeria, the social conception of females as naturally incommensurate to males has given …

Resource Curse, Economic Growth And Development: Panel Data Evidence From Natural Resources-Rich Countries, Marwan Mohamed Alssdek Alssadek Jan 2022

Resource Curse, Economic Growth And Development: Panel Data Evidence From Natural Resources-Rich Countries, Marwan Mohamed Alssdek Alssadek

Plymouth Business School Theses

This thesis examines three plausible explanations for the natural resource curse phenomenon– the Dutch disease, institutional quality, and human capital. The phenomenon implies that countries rich in natural resources tend to have lower economic growth and development compared to countries that have fewer natural resources. The examination of this phenomenon has been organised into three empirical essays in the thesis. The first empirical essay applies the panel data fixed effect with Driscoll and Kraay’s standard errors and cross-sectional augmented distributed lag (CS-ARDL) approaches to examine the Dutch disease problem. Our results show strong evidence that the spending and the resource …

Exploring The Effect Of Branding On Heritage Tourism Management In China, Xia Yin Jan 2022

Exploring The Effect Of Branding On Heritage Tourism Management In China, Xia Yin

Plymouth Business School Theses

China's World Heritage Sites have increasingly been developed to exploit local tourism and alleviate poverty. However, this destination brand may lack a vital destination branding process, which must combine brand components to increase tourist visitation and create loyalty. As a result, the destination image will be negatively affected, which would damage the financial gain needed for heritage conservation. This research contributed to the theory by establishing a novel conceptual framework of destination branding, deploying destination identification, attachment, and satisfaction to predict destination image and loyalty. Based on an objective perspective, this study adopted a positivist philosophy and the approach of …
