Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains underestimated in familial Mediterranean fever-associated AA amyloidosis (FMF-AA). We aimed to compare early markers of endothelial dysfunction and atherosclerosis in FMF-AA with a homozygous M694V mutation (Group 1 = 76 patients) in the Mediterranean fever (MEFV) gene and in patients with other genotypes (Group 2 = 93 patients). Measures of increased risk for future CVD events and endothelial dysfunction, including flow-mediated dilatation (FMD), pentraxin-3 (PTX3), and carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT), and fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) as a marker of atherosclerotic vascular disease were compared between groups. The frequency of clinical FMF manifestations did not differ …

Renal Volume Of Five-Year-Old Preterm Children Are Not Different Than Full-Term Controls, Jaime M. Restrepo, Laura Torres-Canchala, Juan Carlos Arias Cadavid, Michael Ferguson, Adriana Villegas, Oscar Ramirez, Martin Rengifo, Guido Filler May 2022

Renal Volume Of Five-Year-Old Preterm Children Are Not Different Than Full-Term Controls, Jaime M. Restrepo, Laura Torres-Canchala, Juan Carlos Arias Cadavid, Michael Ferguson, Adriana Villegas, Oscar Ramirez, Martin Rengifo, Guido Filler

Paediatrics Publications

Objective: In previous studies, smaller renal volumes were reported in prematurely born infants, however, these renal volumes were not corrected for body surface area, the main determinant of renal size. Given the rapid growth of the renal cortex after premature birth, the authors hypothesized that corrected volumes would not differ from healthy controls. Methods: Ambispective cohort study with prospective follow-up of prematurely born babies in a large specialized center and retrospectively recruited healthy control group. Children were assessed for renal length and renal volumes at age 5 by three independent ultrasonographers. Detailed anthropometry, blood pressure and renal function were also …

The objective of this study was to quantify the magnitude of absolute and relative oral health inequality in countries with similar socio-political environments, but differing oral health care systems such as Canada, the United States (US), and the United Kingdom (UK), in the first decade of the new millennium. Clinical oral health data were obtained from the Canadian Health Measures Survey 2007–2009, the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007–2008, and the Adult Dental Health Survey 2009, for Canada, the US and UK, respectively. The slope index of inequality (SII) and relative index of inequality (RII) were used to quantify …

Cardiovascular Response To Postural Perturbations Of Different Intensities In Healthy Young Adults, Patrick Siedlecki, J. Kevin Shoemaker, Tanya D. Ivanova, S. Jayne Garland May 2022

Cardiovascular Response To Postural Perturbations Of Different Intensities In Healthy Young Adults, Patrick Siedlecki, J. Kevin Shoemaker, Tanya D. Ivanova, S. Jayne Garland

Paediatrics Publications

The ability to regain control of balance is vital in limiting falls and injuries. Little is known regarding how the autonomic nervous system responds during recovery from balance perturbations of different intensities. The purpose of this study was to examine the cardiovascular response following a standing balance perturbation of varying intensities, quantify cardiac baroreflex sensitivity (cBRS) during standing perturbations, and to establish the stability of the cardiac baroreflex during quiet standing before and after balance disturbances. Twenty healthy participants experienced three different perturbation intensity conditions that each included 25 brief posteriorly-directed perturbations, 8–10 s apart. Three perturbation intensity conditions (low, …

Children’S School-Day Nutrient Intake In Ontario: A Cross-Sectional Observational Study Comparing Students’ Packed Lunches From Two School Schedules, Lisa J. Neilson, Lesley A. Macaskill, Jonathan M.H. Luk, Navreeti Sharma, Marina I. Salvadori, Jamie A. Seabrook, Paula D.N. Dworatzek May 2022

Children’S School-Day Nutrient Intake In Ontario: A Cross-Sectional Observational Study Comparing Students’ Packed Lunches From Two School Schedules, Lisa J. Neilson, Lesley A. Macaskill, Jonathan M.H. Luk, Navreeti Sharma, Marina I. Salvadori, Jamie A. Seabrook, Paula D.N. Dworatzek

Paediatrics Publications

This study compared the caloric and nutrient values of packed lunch contents and consumption in the Balanced School Day (BSD) (two 20 min eating periods) versus the Traditional Schedule (TS) (one 20 min lunch). Foods consumed during school were assessed by direct food observation in 321 grade 3 and 4 students, aged 7–10 years, at 9 BSD and 10 TS elementary schools in Ontario. Packed lunch contents in the BSD were significantly higher than the TS in energy (3128.14 ± 1100.36 vs. 2658.98 ± 951.34 kJ, p < 0.001, respectively). Similarly, carbohydrates, total sugar, protein, fat, saturated fatty acids (SFA), calcium, iron, and sodium were significantly higher in the BSD versus TS packed lunches. Correspondingly, students in the BSD consumed significantly more energy, carbohydrates, total sugar, and SFA compared to the TS. Overall, lunches brought by students in the BSD schedule provided more energy across all macronutrients, with only a few micronutrients showing increased amounts, suggesting two 20 min eating opportunities could contribute to excess caloric intake during school, potentially contributing to the prevalence of childhood overweight and obesity in Canada. Furthermore, packed lunches in both schedules had excess amounts of nutrients of concern and much work is needed to ensure that children in Canada receive nutritious lunches at school.

Freedom From Discrimination Or Freedom To Discriminate? Discursive Tensions Within Discrimination Policies In Medical Education, Javeed Sukhera, Helly Goez, Allison Brown, Wael Haddara, Saleem Razack May 2022

Paediatrics Publications

The importance of advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion for all members of the academic medical community has gained recent attention. Academic medical organizations have attempted to increase broader representation while seeking structural reforms consistent with the goal of enhancing equity and reducing disproportionality. However, efforts remain constrained while minority groups continue to experience discrimination. In this study, the authors sought to identify and understand the discursive effects of discrimination policies within medical education. The authors assembled an archive of 22 texts consisting of publicly available discrimination and harassment policy documents in 13 Canadian medical schools that were active as of …

O-Glcnacylation And Regulation Of Galectin-3 In Extraembryonic Endoderm Differentiation, Mohamed I. Gatie, Danielle M. Spice, Amritpal Garha, Adam Mctague, Mariam Ahmer, Alexander V. Timoshenko, Gregory M. Kelly May 2022

O-Glcnacylation And Regulation Of Galectin-3 In Extraembryonic Endoderm Differentiation, Mohamed I. Gatie, Danielle M. Spice, Amritpal Garha, Adam Mctague, Mariam Ahmer, Alexander V. Timoshenko, Gregory M. Kelly

Paediatrics Publications

The regulation of proteins through the addition and removal of O-linked β-N-acetylglucosamine (O-GlcNAc) plays a role in many signaling events, specifically in stem cell pluripo-tency and the regulation of differentiation. However, these post-translational modifications have not been explored in extraembryonic endoderm (XEN) differentiation. Of the plethora of proteins regulated through O-GlcNAc, we explored galectin-3 as a candidate protein known to have various intracellular and extracellular functions. Based on other studies, we predicted a reduction in global O-GlcNAcylation levels and a distinct galectin expression profile in XEN cells relative to embryonic stem (ES) cells. By conducting dot blot analysis, XEN cells …

Neuroscience Institute Publications

Background: Health research agendas are often set by researchers or by industry and may not reflect the needs and priorities of end users. This priority-setting partnership (PSP) for epilepsy was undertaken to identify the most pressing unanswered questions about epilepsy and seizures from the perspective of people with epilepsy (PWE) and their care providers. Methods: Using the methodology developed by the James Lind Alliance (JLA), evidence uncertainties were gathered via online surveys from stakeholders across Canada. Submissions were formed into summary questions and checked against existing evidence to determine if they were true uncertainties. Verified uncertainties were then ranked by …

Multi-View 3d Transesophageal Echocardiography Registration And Volume Compounding For Mitral Valve Procedure Planning, Patrick Carnahan, John Moore, Daniel Bainbridge, Elvis C.S. Chen, Terry M. Peters

Neuroscience Institute Publications

Three-dimensional ultrasound mosaicing can increase image quality and expand the field of view. However, limited work has been done applying these compounded approaches for cardiac procedures focused on the mitral valve. For procedures targeting the mitral valve, transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is the primary imaging modality used as it provides clear 3D images of the valve and surrounding tissues. However, TEE suffers from image artefacts and signal dropout, particularly for structures lying below the valve, including chordae tendineae, making it necessary to acquire alternative echo views to visualize these structures. Due to the limited field of view obtainable, the entire ventricle …

Characterization And Correction Of Time-Varying Eddy Currents For Diffusion Mri, Jake J. Valsamis, Paul I. Dubovan, Corey A. Baron

Neuroscience Institute Publications

Purpose: To develop and test a method for reducing artifacts due to time-varying eddy currents in oscillating gradient spin-echo (OGSE) diffusion images. Methods: An in-house algorithm (TVEDDY), that for the first time retrospectively models eddy current decay, was tested on pulsed gradient spin echo and OGSE brain images acquired at 7 T. Image pairs were acquired using opposite polarity diffusion gradients. A three-parameter exponential decay model (two amplitudes and a time constant) was used to characterize and correct eddy current distortions by minimizing the intensity difference between image pairs. Correction performance was compared with conventional correction methods by evaluating the …

The Expression And Function Of Glutamate Aspartate Transporters In Bergmann Glia Are Decreased In Neuronal Nitric Oxide Synthase-Knockout Mice During Postnatal Development, Vasiliki Tellios, Matthew J.E. Maksoud, Wei Yang Lu

Neuroscience Institute Publications

Bergmann glia (BG) predominantly use glutamate/aspartate transporters (GLAST) for glutamate uptake in the cerebellum. Recently, nitric oxide (NO) treatment has been shown to upregulate GLAST function and increase glutamate uptake in vitro. We previously discovered that neuronal nitric oxide synthase knockout (nNOS−/−) mice displayed structural and functional neuronal abnormalities in the cerebellum during development, in addition to previously reported motor deficits. Although these developmental deficits have been identified in the nNOS−/− cerebellum, it is unknown whether BG morphology and GLAST expression are also affected in the absence of nNOS in vivo. This study is the first to characterize BG morphology …

Alcohol use is a contributor in the premature deaths of approximately 3 million people annually. Among the risk factors for alcohol misuse is circadian rhythm disruption; however, this connection remains poorly understood. Inhibition of the circadian nuclear receptor REV-ERBα is known to disrupt molecular feedback loops integral to daily oscillations, and impact diurnal fluctuations in the expression of proteins required for reward-related neurotransmission. However, the role of REV-ERBα in alcohol and substance use-related phenotypes is unknown. Herein, we used a Rev-erbα knockout mouse line and ethanol two-bottle choice preference testing to show that disruption of Rev-erbα reduces ethanol preference in …

Introduction: Behavioural dysfunction is a key feature of genetic frontotemporal dementia (FTD) but validated clinical scales measuring behaviour are lacking at present. Methods: We assessed behaviour using the revised version of the Cambridge Behavioural Inventory (CBI-R) in 733 participants from the Genetic FTD Initiative study: 466 mutation carriers (195 C9orf72, 76 MAPT, 195 GRN) and 267 non-mutation carriers (controls). All mutation carriers were stratified according to their global CDR plus NACC FTLD score into three groups: asymptomatic (CDR = 0), prodromal (CDR = 0.5) and symptomatic (CDR = 1+). Mixed-effects models adjusted for age, education, sex and family clustering were …

Several CSF and blood biomarkers for genetic frontotemporal dementia have been proposed, including those reflecting neuroaxonal loss (neurofilament light chain and phosphorylated neurofilament heavy chain), synapse dysfunction [neuronal pentraxin 2 (NPTX2)], astrogliosis (glial fibrillary acidic protein) and complement activation (C1q, C3b). Determining the sequence in which biomarkers become abnormal over the course of disease could facilitate disease staging and help identify mutation carriers with prodromal or early-stage frontotemporal dementia, which is especially important as pharmaceutical trials emerge. We aimed to model the sequence of biomarker abnormalities in presymptomatic and symptomatic genetic frontotemporal dementia using cross-sectional data from the Genetic Frontotemporal …

Tau is one of several proteins associated with frontotemporal dementia. While knowing which protein is causing a patient's disease is crucial, no biomarker currently exists for identifying tau in vivo in frontotemporal dementia. The objective of this study was to investigate the potential for the promising 18F-MK-6240 PET tracer to bind to tau in vivo in genetic frontotemporal dementia. We enrolled subjects with genetic frontotemporal dementia, who constitute an ideal population for testing because their pathology is already known based on their mutation. Ten participants (three with symptomatic P301L and R406W MAPT mutations expected to show tau binding, three with …

Education And The Pandemic: Engaging In Epistemic Humility To Question Assumptions, Institutions, And Knowledges, Prachi Srivastava, Prachi Srivastava

Education Publications

Education systems are the formal institutionalisations of the knowledges and values our societies privilege, who they privilege, how, and on what terms. They are imbued with assumptions. These assumptions inform how systems are structured. The pandemic has exposed existing global and local inequalities, non-binary dynamics of inclusion and exclusion, and dysfunctions of education systems. This paper argues that the global scale and severity of the education disruption challenges taken-for-granted distinctions that privilege systems of the ‘West’ as referential for ‘the Rest’. It argues that the existing overarching technicist knowledge regime is inadequate for recovery, and proposes an alternative approach.

Do Environmental Regulations Affect The Decision To Export?, Jevan Cherniwchan, Nouri Najjar May 2022

Do Environmental Regulations Affect The Decision To Export?, Jevan Cherniwchan, Nouri Najjar

Business Publications

This paper investigates how a common form of environmental regulation—air quality standards—affects exporters. We develop a simple theoretical model to show how the design of these standards causes (i) some firms to stop exporting and (ii) a reduction in the export volumes of affected continuing exporters. We exploit quasi-experimental variation resulting from the design of Canadian air quality standards to test these predictions empirically. Our estimates confirm our model's predictions: we find that for the most affected manufacturers, regulation reduced export volumes by 32 percent and increased the likelihood plants stop exporting by 5 percentage points. (JEL D12, F14, F18, …

A Descriptive Study Of College Students’ Preferences Toward Rhetorical Devices In Advertisements, Rachel Beyer May 2022

A Descriptive Study Of College Students’ Preferences Toward Rhetorical Devices In Advertisements, Rachel Beyer

Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Undergraduate Honors Theses

Advertisements are specifically created to convince people of the importance to either buy a product or subscribe to an ideal. Companies are the primary users of advertisements, where advertisements are designed to increase profitability (Roberts, 2020). The advertising industry in America is quite large. Food is a diversified and competitive industry, this competition in the food industry causes companies to be dependent on consumer preference and knowledge (UC Davis Nutrition Department, 2020). With Generation Z on the rise, there should be an increased focus on their preferences and needs in all industries, including the food industry (Southgate, 2017). The purpose …

Supporting A T-Shaped Identity Through Professional Associations: A Graduate Student Perspective, Suthanit Wetcho, Rebeca Peacock, Okan Arslan

University Author Recognition Bibliography: 2022

T-shaped identity has been suggested as an effective way to help graduate students develop strong disciplinary expertise and breadth of knowledge. To cultivate this T-shaped identity, graduate students may benefit from participating in professional associations. These professional associations can help graduate students learn and develop through the community's numerous activities such as developing knowledge and skills, presenting and discussing research, learning across the standards, and stepping into leadership roles. This paper discusses three graduate students' viewpoints on their experiences on how engaging in professional organizations has helped shape their identities.

Evidence-Based Practice Guideline Development: Selection Of Local Anesthetics And The Additive Dexamethasone In Brachial Plexus Blocks, Alexandra Mcguire May 2022

Evidence-Based Practice Guideline Development: Selection Of Local Anesthetics And The Additive Dexamethasone In Brachial Plexus Blocks, Alexandra Mcguire

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Brachial plexus blocks (BPB) are a type of regional anesthesia that inhibits the sensory and motor function of the upper extremity. The efficacy of a BPB depends on the type and dose of local anesthetics (LA), as well as the use of any additive agent. The selection of LA depends on the type, concentration, and volume of LA. Certain additives, such as dexamethasone, when added to BPB, were shown to increase motor and sensory block duration.

A chart audit conducted by the pharmacy and anesthesia departments revealed a significant variability of clinical practice in the use of LA and additives …

Evidence Based Practice Strategies: Using Price Lists And Peer Coaching To Improve Medication Cost Containment And Documentation Practices In Anesthesia Providers At An Urban Level One Trauma Center, Abigalle Ryan Sparrow

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

According to the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) guidelines for Documenting Anesthesia Care Practice and Policy Considerations, anesthesia provider documentation represents a detailed account of the patient’s anesthesia care during various phases of anesthesia during their hospital stay (Documenting Anesthesia Care: Practice and Policy Considerations, 2016). The primary purpose of anesthesia documentation is to capture accurate and comprehensive information communicating a patient’s anesthetic experience, which includes the documentation of all administered medications. The patient’s electronic or written medical record is a legal document, which is also referenced for reimbursement, quality improvement, and review by external organizations for …

Change For The Ohio Nurse Practitioner Treating Worker's Compensation Patients: A Needs Analysis, Jessica Huff May 2022

Change For The Ohio Nurse Practitioner Treating Worker's Compensation Patients: A Needs Analysis, Jessica Huff

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Autonomous nurse practitioners are an effective and useful member of the healthcare team, particularly when given a less restrictive scope of practice at the state level. The autonomous nurse practitioner can help improve patient outcomes/needs as a decision-making health care team member.

Ohio nurse practitioners treating worker’s compensation patients are limited in treating the injured worker not because of the nurse practitioner scope of practice, but because of the bureaucratic paperwork worker’s compensation requires of its patients/providers. The purpose of the project was to conduct a needs analysis regarding a legislative change proposal for the practice authority of nurse practitioners …

“Strumpet,” “Huswife,” “Whore”: Centering Othello’S Bianca, Phoebe Merten May 2022

“Strumpet,” “Huswife,” “Whore”: Centering Othello’S Bianca, Phoebe Merten

English (MA) Theses

Is Bianca a sex worker? What meanings change if she is or isn’t? Not enough artistic or critical attention has been paid the character. It seems likely that the initial lack of attention stemmed from Bianca’s status as a purported sex worker, as though this makes her somehow categorically different from the other women in the play, or inherently less interesting. There has in the past decade or so been a marked increase in scholarship on sex work, but this too largely skims over Bianca, likely because of the ambiguity surrounding her profession.

In my introduction I go over some …
