A Place-Based Canoe Unit For Middle School Students, Laura Davies May 2022

A Place-Based Canoe Unit For Middle School Students, Laura Davies

Education

Behavior problems are steadily increasing at the middle school as a result ofthe COVID-19 pandemic and the trauma it caused in the students’ lives. Not only do educators want to reduce the behavior problems, but we also want students to feel safe and know that their individual needs will be met. Educators are striving to find creative ways to increase academic success, inspire students, teach important life skills and address social-emotional needs. One way I would like to address this is by creating a four week interdisciplinary place-based education unit focused on the significance and importance of canoes in Southeast …

Coastal Wetland Carbon And Mineral Responses To Storm And Climate Change Through Time, At Cape Espenberg Alaska, Lindsey Michelle Smith May 2022

Coastal Wetland Carbon And Mineral Responses To Storm And Climate Change Through Time, At Cape Espenberg Alaska, Lindsey Michelle Smith

Geosciences

The Arctic is experiencing warming and ecological shifts due to climate change and the compounded effects of polar amplification. There is a deficit of information surrounding the carbon cycle response in Arctic Alaskan coastal marsh environments to these forces. The Cape Espenberg barrier beach system has been mostly preserved through time as a shoreline-parallel, linear geometry prograding geomorphic feature. This study determines the Arctic carbon and mineral accumulation trends in marsh environments at Cape Espenberg for both paleo (pre 1850 AD) and modern (post 1850 AD) timeframes. This project makes connections between the responses of carbon and mineral materials to …

Engineering

Microfluidics research is a constantly evolving and developing field of research in the biological, chemical, and medical sciences. To perform microfluidic analyses, various types of pump designs have been developed or optimized. These pumps are generally capable of pumping flow in the range of 0.1-100s of microliters (µL) per minute, with the goal of pumping fluid with an extremely consistent flow rate. These pumps include, but are not limited to, peristaltic, syringe, membrane, and lobe pumps. Both commercial and open-source designs have been developed to meet the needs of continued research. Commercial designs are very expensive, but offer limited flexibility …

An Analysis Of Turbulent Effects On Hydrokinetic Power Generation, Emily A. Browning May 2022

An Analysis Of Turbulent Effects On Hydrokinetic Power Generation, Emily A. Browning

Engineering

The effects of turbulence on power generation from a Current Energy Converter (CEC) are not fully understood. This thesis investigates the correlation between a vertical axis CEC's power output and the water velocity in the frequency and time domains. Chapter 2 shows the correlation between velocity and electrical power in frequency space. This correlation gives insight into the size of eddies that influence the CEC's power output. The results of this correlation analysis show that eddies of diameter around 0.8m have a noticeable impact on the power generation. Calculating the observed average integral length scale, the range of eddy diameters …

Will Reducing Drug Prices Slow Innovation?, Gregory Vaughan, Fred Ledley May 2022

Will Reducing Drug Prices Slow Innovation?, Gregory Vaughan, Fred Ledley

Natural & Applied Sciences Faculty Publications

The pharmaceutical industry has long argued that high drug prices reflect the high cost of innovation and that reducing drug prices would necessarily slow the pipeline of new drugs. These arguments have been bolstered by studies of large pharmaceutical companies showing statistical associations between the projected market size or revenue for pharmaceutical products and research & development (R&D) activity. Our analysis recognizes the increasingly important role of small biopharmaceuticals in drug development , companies that typically have little revenue and negative earnings, but are now responsible for more than 40% of new drug approvals. We examine the relationship between changes …

It was hypothesized that the catalyst nanoceria can increase oxidative

stress/inflammation from the basal state and reduce it from the elevated state .

Nanoceria are cleared by macrophages. To test the hypothesis, M0 (non-polarized),

M1- (classically activated, pro-inflammatory), and M2-like (alternatively activated,

regulatory phenotype) RAW 264.7 macrophages were nanoceria exposed. Responses

were quantified by arginase activity, IL-1ß level, cell oxygen consumption rate (OCR),

the glycolysis stress test (GST), morphology determined by light microscopy,

macrophage phenotype marker expression and morphology using a novel three

dimensional immunohistochemical method, and RT-qPCR. Nanoceria blocked

arginase and IL-1ß effects, increased M0 cell OCR and GST …

Long Runs Of Homozygosity Are Correlated With Marriage Preferences Across Global Population Samples, Samali Anova Sahoo, Arslan A. Zaidi, Santosh Anagol, Iain Mathieson

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

Children of consanguineous unions carry long runs of homozygosity (ROH) in their genomes, due to their parents’ recent shared ancestry. This increases the burden of recessive disease in populations with high levels of consanguinity and has been heavily studied in some groups. However, there has been little investigation of the broader effect of consanguinity on patterns of genetic variation on a global scale. Here, we collect published genetic data and information about marriage practice from 395 worldwide populations and show that reported preference for cousin marriage has a detectable association with the distribution of long ROH in this sample, increasing …

A Competence-Based Online Learning Video And In-Situ Simulation To Improve Perioperative Anesthesia Nurse Practitioner Self-Efficacy In Responding To Anesthesia Emergencies, Sara Durgerian

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Background: Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are broadly educated to the population-based role in which they practice. Further education in subspecialties is essential as more NPs are working autonomously in highly specialized care areas.

Problem: In the Department of Anesthesia at a large urban hospital, perioperative anesthesia NPs lack formal training in the subspecialty of anesthesia, which contributed to a lack of self-efficacy when responding to anesthesia emergencies.

Methods: An asynchronous multimodal brief instructional video accompanied by an in-situ simulation of an anesthesia emergency was developed to increase knowledge and confidence in perioperative anesthesia nurse practitioner response to anesthesia emergencies.

Results: A …

Sodium Mediates Developmentally Plastic Responses In Plants And Herbivores, Luis Santiago-Rosario May 2022

Sodium Mediates Developmentally Plastic Responses In Plants And Herbivores, Luis Santiago-Rosario

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Sodium plays a crucial role in organismal performance, trophic-level interactions, and eco-evolutionary dynamics. For plants, sodium impacts osmoregulation, growth, and water uptake. For animals, sodium is essential influencing osmoregulatory processes, muscle and neural development, and blood regulation. My dissertation aims to disentangle why sodium mismatch affects resource-consumer interactions and its influence on morphological and behavioral plasticity. First, I identified how sodium impacts plant performance and sodium accumulation strategies. I initially focused my research on understanding how increasing substrate sodium affects plant growth and tissue sodium accumulation strategies in controlled settings using a systematic review approach. I found that saltier plants …

Zauthly: A Zero Trust Oauth2 Authorization Tool, Matthew Robert Perry May 2022

Zauthly: A Zero Trust Oauth2 Authorization Tool, Matthew Robert Perry

Computer Science

Controlling authentication and authorization is a pivotal part of managing modern web resources. Over the past decade, Oauth and OpenID Connect have shown that they are capable and secure protocols used for secure communication between the Identity Providers (IdP) and requesting parties that consume them. Zero Trust (ZT) architectures are based on authenticating individual requests instead of machines or networks. ZT has shown a pathway that enables a more secure flow oftrusted communication. This is done by defining the control systems and their counterpart the data systems. Zauthly applies ZT principles to Oauth2 flows to create a middleware service that …

Optimization And Forecasting Algorithms For Converter Dominated Distribution Networks Using Blockchain And Ai, Chinmay Shah May 2022

Optimization And Forecasting Algorithms For Converter Dominated Distribution Networks Using Blockchain And Ai, Chinmay Shah

Engineering

Integration of power electronic converter-based distributed energy resources (DERs) in electric power distribution networks is growing exponentially with the recent interest in reducing carbon emissions from fossil fuel-based generation. As the contribution of renewable energy sources in the DER mix continues to increase, so does the incorporation of battery energy storage systems and other controllable loads to compensate for the high variability and uncertainty in the generation from renewable DERs and grid demand. Strategies for increasing the contribution of renewable energy sources and using reserves to accommodate for variations and uncertainty in generation and load include distributed optimal power flow …

Experimental Investigation Of Nonthermal Enhanced Oil Recovery Techniques For Improving Oil Recovery On Alaska North Slope, Yaoze Cheng May 2022

Experimental Investigation Of Nonthermal Enhanced Oil Recovery Techniques For Improving Oil Recovery On Alaska North Slope, Yaoze Cheng

Engineering

Exploitation of viscous and heavy oils on Alaska North Slope (ANS) requires nonthermal enhanced oil recovery (EOR) techniques. Currently, three nonthermal EOR methods, including solvent injection, low salinity water (LSW) flooding, and low salinity polymer (LSP) injection, have been proved to be useful on ANS. ANS viscous and heavy oils can be developed effectively by combining those three nonthermal EOR techniques. In this dissertation, lab experiments have been conducted to investigate the potential of the proposed hybrid nonthermal EOR techniques, including HSW (high salinity water)-LSW-softened LSW flooding, HSW-LSW-LSP flooding, CO₂-enriched LHS (light hydrocarbon solvent)-alternating-LSW flooding, LHS-alternating-LSW flooding, CO₂-enriched LHS (light …

Study On Emulsification/Demulsification Behavior And Mechanism Of Produced Liquid From Polymer Flooding On Alaska North Slope, Hongli Chang May 2022

Study On Emulsification/Demulsification Behavior And Mechanism Of Produced Liquid From Polymer Flooding On Alaska North Slope, Hongli Chang

Engineering

Heavy oil reservoirs on Alaska North Slope (ANS) are unconsolidated and contain abundant clay minerals, where the first-ever field pilot is currently implemented to validate the use of polymer floods for heavy oil enhanced oil recovery (EOR). The polymer molecules and/or fine clay particles carried with the produced liquid could potentially affect the oil/water separation, which is one of the major concerns for field operators. This dissertation aims to investigate the emulsification behavior of produced liquid, understand the emulsifying mechanism, and seek an adaptive and cost-effective method to treat the produced liquid from polymer flooding. Emulsions were prepared by mechanically …

Calculation Of Sublimation From Tundra Snowpack In Alaska, Kelsey Stockert May 2022

Calculation Of Sublimation From Tundra Snowpack In Alaska, Kelsey Stockert

Engineering

Snow sublimation is the direct transfer of water between the snowpack and the atmosphere, playing a fundamental role in the winter water balance. To date, there are few studies that quantify sublimation by direct measurements. This study uses Eddy Covariance (EC) data from 2010 to 2020 to calculate sublimation from three locations within Imnavait Creek watershed, a small Arctic watershed (2.2 km2) located on the North Slope of Alaska. EC fundamentally measures only surface sublimation, which underestimates total sublimation since it does not consider sublimation from blowing snow. Complementary data were collected at each EC measurement site and analyzed in …

A series of recommendations are included within this document …

Performance Of Gaussian Naïve Bayes For Classification With Dependencies From Archemedian Copula, Hugh E. Winston May 2022

Performance Of Gaussian Naïve Bayes For Classification With Dependencies From Archemedian Copula, Hugh E. Winston

Mathematics and Statistics

Naive Bayes is an application of Bayes theorem in which the likelihood function is factored into marginals by making the assumption that the variables are independent. Naive Bayes is typically used for classification problems in which the goal is to find the class with the largest probability given the data on hand. When the data on hand are continuous real numbers we can further assume they are class conditionally normally distributed, which is a particular version of Naive Bayes called Gaussian Naive Bayes. This paper explores when Gaussian Naive Bayes classification problems work well vs when they do not. Typically …

Control Problems For The Wave And Telegrapher's Equations On Metric Graphs, Gazi Mahmud Alam May 2022

Control Problems For The Wave And Telegrapher's Equations On Metric Graphs, Gazi Mahmud Alam

Mathematics and Statistics

The dissertation focuses on control problems for the wave and telegrapher's equations on metric graphs. In the first part, an algorithm is constructed to solve the exact control problems on finite intervals. The algorithm is implemented numerically to solve the exact control problems on finite intervals. Moreover, we developed numerical algorithms for the solution of control problems on metric graphs based on the recent boundary controllability results of wave equations on metric graphs. We presented numerical solutions to shape control problems on quantum graphs. Specifically, we presented the results of numerical experiments involving a three-star graph. Our second part deals …
