Working memory is a fundamental cognitive process for decision-making and is a hallmark impairment in a variety of neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases. Spatial working memory paradigms are a valuable tool to assess these processes in rodents and dissect the neurobiology underlying working memory. The trial unique non-match to location (TUNL) task is an automated touchscreen paradigm used to study spatial working memory and pattern separation processes in rodents. Here, animals must remember the spatial location of a stimulus presented on the screen over a delay period; and use this representation to respond to the novel location when the two are …

Background: Abnormalities of cortical morphology have been consistently reported in major depressive disorder (MDD), with widespread focal alterations in cortical thickness, surface area and gyrification. However, it is unclear whether these distributed focal changes disrupt the system-level architecture (topology) of brain morphology in MDD. If present, such a topological disruption might explain the mechanisms that underlie altered cortical morphology in MDD. Methods: Seventy-six patients with first-episode MDD (33 male, 43 female) and 66 healthy controls (32 male, 34 female) underwent structural MRI scans. We calculated cortical indices, including cortical thickness, surface area and local gyrification index, using FreeSurfer. We constructed …

Purpose: The ability to hear ourselves speak has been shown to play an important role in the development and maintenance of fluent and coherent speech. Despite this, little is known about the developing speech motor control system throughout childhood, in particular if and how vocal and articulatory control may differ throughout development. A scoping review was undertaken to identify and describe the full range of studies investigating responses to frequency altered auditory feedback in pediatric populations and their contributions to our understanding of the development of auditory feedback control and sensorimotor learning in childhood and adolescence. Method: Relevant studies were …

Introduction: The opioid epidemic persists in the United States. The use of opioid medications is often assessed by claims data but potentially underestimated.
Objectives: We evaluated the temporal trend in the use of opioid and nonopioid pain medications from a national survey.
Methods: Using data from the 2001 to 2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), we examined the current use of prescription analgesics in the past 30 days among 50,201 respondents aged 20 years or older. Joinpoint regressions were used to test statistically meaningful trends of opioid vs nonopioid analgesics.
Results: The mean percentage of people who had …

Take Me Outside! Balancing Children's Social-Emotional Lives Using A Forest School Approach, Kristi Downing
Take Me Outside! Balancing Children's Social-Emotional Lives Using A Forest School Approach, Kristi Downing
Education
As our fast-paced society brings children indoors at an increasing rate we are losing the essence of childhood experiences in nature. The ability to connect with the land, engage in our environment, and connect to the place we call home is essential for developing healthy social connections and skills. The Forest School ethos and principles uphold the sacredness of child-led, nature-based learning, and of giving children autonomy and agency in their lived experiences while exploring and learning outside. Forest School is based on a Swedish philosophy and way oflife, friluftsliv, literally “free air life” which has more recently been adopted across …
Experiences Of Alaska New Teachers: Are They Supported?, Ashley Posey
Experiences Of Alaska New Teachers: Are They Supported?, Ashley Posey
Education
Teaching is a stressful job. New teachers especially experience stress as they are not only experiencing the typical stresses of being a teacher, but also experiencing the stress of learning a new profession. Teacher attrition is a significant problem in Alaska. Losing effective teachers is detrimental to schools and students. Therefore, it is important to ensure that teachers feel supported so that they will stay in the teaching profession. Mat-Su school district teachers, within their first three years of teaching, were surveyed to determine whether they felt supported as they began their teaching careers. Survey questions asked whether teachers felt …
Hysteria, Melissa Stiefel
Hysteria, Melissa Stiefel
Art
My name is Melissa Stiefel, and I am seeking an MFA in Photography with a secondary in Sculpture. In this thesis body of work, I have taken the concept of self-portraiture, the examined life behind the portrait, and combined the story with portrait with photomontage. The subject matter is personal, but I hope relatable. I have looked at my project from multiple points of view and various angles to come up with works that spoke to me and told the story I wanted to share. The reason I have chosen self-portraiture is twofold. First, I chose self-portraiture because Covid happened …

Art
Botanicals is an exhibit of extremely close-up color photographs of flowers and plant materials which were created without the use of a camera. The 31 framed works reference the historical memento mori art movement intended to remind the viewer of the fragility of life. The work explores the details of a world unseen by the naked eye. The images were all made using a flatbed scanner at extremely high resolution but often seem more three-dimensional than would usually be expected from that process. There is something unusual about the lighting in these images but it’s hard to put one’s finger …

Designing Neighborhood-Scale Green Infrastructure (Gi) To Improve The Health And Well-Being Of Industry-Adjacent Communities Through Air Pollution Mitigation In Joppa, Texas, Lauren Wardwell
Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive
Ambient outdoor air pollution kills roughly 4.2 million people every year worldwide and is linked as a contributing factor to diseases such as asthma, cancer, infertility, and neurological disorders. In the United States, minority communities are more likely to live near sources of air pollution, such as highways and industrial sites, and therefore face higher risks of developing the associated health difficulties. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), people of color (POC) are exposed to disproportionately higher levels of ambient fine particulate matter (PM) air pollution, regardless of income levels or region. While the EPA monitors and enforces outdoor …

Background: The emergence of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has resulted in a pandemic that has significantly impacted healthcare systems at a global level. Health care facilities in Nepal, as in other low- and middle-income countries, have limited resources for the treatment and management of COVID-19 patients. Only critical cases are admitted to the hospital resulting in most patients in home isolation.
Methods: Himalaya Home Care (HHC) was initiated to monitor and provide counseling to home isolated COVID-19 patients for disease prevention, control, and treatment. Counselors included one physician and four nurses. Lists of patients were obtained from district and municipal …

Maximizing Social Equity As A Pillar Of Public Administration: An Examination Of Cannabis Dispensary Licensing In Pennsylvania, A. Lee Hannah, Daniel J. Mallinson, Lauren Azevedo
Political Science Faculty Publications
Public administration upholds four pillars of an administrative practice: economy, efficiency, effectiveness, and social equity. The question arises, however, how do administrators balance effectiveness and social equity when implementing policy? Can the values contributing to administrative decisions be measured? This study leverages the expansion of medical cannabis programs in the states to interrogate these questions. The awarding of dispensary licenses in Pennsylvania affords the ability to determine the effect of social equity scoring on license award decisions, relative to criteria that represent the other pillars. The results show that safety and business acumen were the most important determining factors in …

How I’M Spending My Summer (Getting Acclimated To The Physical Workplace), Olivia Smith Schlinck
Library Staff Online Writings
It’s mid-May which, in the law school world, means finals, grading, graduation and the impending summer. As the spring semester winds to a close, I’ve been finding myself staring at a mostly blank – beautifully, thankfully blank – summer calendar and wondering: how will I fill my time?

Lipid Accumulation In Three Species Of Neocalanus Copepod In The Northern Gulf Of Alaska, Delaney M. Coleman
Lipid Accumulation In Three Species Of Neocalanus Copepod In The Northern Gulf Of Alaska, Delaney M. Coleman
Oceanography
The Northern Gulf of Alaska experiences pronounced seasonality and inter-annual variability characterized by a significant bloom of phytoplankton in the spring. Neocalanus copepods in the NGA have evolved to match their lifecycle to the seasonality of the Gulf of Alaska and feed upon the spring phytoplankton bloom. All three of these Neocalanus species utilize diapause as an over-wintering strategy; acquiring large stores of lipid to sustain them through winter hibernation and subsequent reproduction. Zooplankton were sampled with 150 and 505 µm mesh nets from 0 to 1200 m along the Seward Line and within Prince William Sound in the Northern …
Acoustic Detection And Characterization Of Sea Ice And Surface Waves In The Northeast Chukchi Sea, Savannah J. Sandy
Acoustic Detection And Characterization Of Sea Ice And Surface Waves In The Northeast Chukchi Sea, Savannah J. Sandy
Oceanography
Monitoring the status of Arctic marine ecosystems is aided by oceanographic moorings that autonomously collect data year-round. Near Hanna Shoal in the northeast Chukchi Sea, the Chukchi Ecosystem Observatory moorings include an ASL Environmental Sciences Acoustic Zooplankton Fish Profiler (AZFP) datalogger, a multi-frequency upward-looking sonar that is programmed to collect data from across the upper 30 m of the water column every 10-20 seconds. Using six years of nearly continuous data, here we describe a statistical analysis of the datalogger's 455 kHz acoustic backscatter return signal. When used in conjunction with a selforganizing map machine learning algorithm, these data allow …

At The Edge Of Somewhere: Journeying On The Dalton Highway, Charlotte A. Wheeler
Arctic and Northern Studies
Some journeys need to be made. In At the Edge of Somewhere, the writer embarks on a cycle ride from Fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay on Alaska's remote and dangerous Dalton Highway. Drawn obsessively to the Arctic sea ice some years earlier and, now, onto "the road," her journey attempts to bring closure to the long-standing need to be on the move, at once not able or even wanting to settle but also seeking a place within herself, and therefore a physical location, she might call home. She travels with a found notebook, acquired unexpectedly at the start of her ride, …
