Sweet Romance And A Ticking-Clock-Plot: Two Novels For Exploring Identity And Intersectionality, Kristin Bartley Lenz
Michigan Reading Journal
A “ticking-clock” plot keeps readers of all ages engaged in a story. The premises of two 2021 debut young adult novels sound similar at first glance: an unknown bully broadcasts the protagonists’ personal, private “to-do” lists to the entire school with mortifying and surprising results. Each story has a suspenseful countdown and themes of identity, intersectionality, and navigating a first romance, but with very different settings and characters. Teen readers will cheer them on and relate to their discoveries.

Writing As A Vessel For Thinking: Incorporating Self-Regulation, Metacognition, And Formative Assessment In The Middle School Ela Classroom, Alyssha N. Ginzel
Writing As A Vessel For Thinking: Incorporating Self-Regulation, Metacognition, And Formative Assessment In The Middle School Ela Classroom, Alyssha N. Ginzel
Michigan Reading Journal
This article examines three approaches to teaching writing: self-regulated instruction (Graham, 2018; Graham, 2020; Graham & Perin, 2007), metacognitive strategies (Hacker, 2018; Madison et al., 2019), and formative assessment (Black & Wiliam, 1998; Fleischer, 2013; Madison et al., 2019). Implementing these approaches, secondary ELA teachers can strike a balance between order and chaos while empowering adolescents to recognize, develop, and take ownership of their thinking and writing. Writing can and should be about grappling with big ideas that ultimately help us come to deeper, fuller understandings of ourselves and the world. This article explores how secondary ELA teachers can help …
The Stance, The Text, And The Talk: Three Components Of A Critical Race-Oriented Interactive Read Aloud, Rebecca Witte
The Stance, The Text, And The Talk: Three Components Of A Critical Race-Oriented Interactive Read Aloud, Rebecca Witte
Michigan Reading Journal
The flexible structure of an interactive read aloud (IRA) provides a platform to address issues of race for those educators who have the desire, but may not know how or where to start. Using a visual of a three circle diagram, the paper illustrates the importance of aligning a critical racial stance, the text, and the talk together to maximize student learning. One text, Can I Touch Your Hair? (Latham & Waters, 2019) is highlighted as a model to show the possible convergence of the three components. In addition, the author notes the importance of reflexivity and provides suggestions on …

Socially Just Literacy Teaching Within Virtual Spaces: Using Woods’ Model For Evaluating Practice, Elizabeth Isidro, Laura Teichert
Michigan Reading Journal
This study inquires into pre-service teachers’ teaching experiences within a virtual tutoring practicum in a literacy methods course. Using Woods’ (2018) model of Socially Just Literacy Pedagogy, we approach the research question: What are undergraduate pre-service teachers’ experiences in virtual tutoring that align with socially just literacy teaching? Drawing from interviews, we engaged in Narrative Inquiry as a way to highlight participants’ experiences while providing us rich contextual, temporal, and social understandings of their experiences that move towards socially just literacy teaching. Our findings suggest socially just literacy teaching practices along the dimensions of knowledge and skills in literacy pedagogy, …

Zeitgeist: A Journal of Politics, History, and Philosphy
Welcome to Zeitgeist. Yes, that is one of those relatively amorphous German words, roughly meaning the “spirit of the times,” or of the “age.” It is a neat projection of the early 19th century European urge to place the unknowable, the “feeling,” into words. And words in any of the formats that writers engage in. With that in mind the term makes a good title for this effort to sweep together a sample of writing, gathered from the willing, here at IMSA. These are student writers, expressing ideas, feelings and making an effort to understand some fragment of the world …

Prediction Of Functional Threshold Power From Graded Exercise Test Data In Highly-Trained Individuals, Eanna Mc Grath, Bernard Donne, Alessio Benavoli, Neil Fleming, Nicholas Mahony
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 15(4): 747-759, 2022. The purpose of the current investigation was to derive an equation that could predict Functional Threshold Power (FTP) from Graded Exercise Test (GxT) data. The FTP test has been demonstrated to represent the highest cycling power output that can be maintained in a quasi-steady state for 60-min. Previous investigations to determine a comparable marker derived from a Graded Exercise test have had limited success to date. Consequently, the current study aimed to predict FTP from GxT data to provide an additional index of cycling performance. FTP has been reported to provide an …

The Relationship Between Eating Disorders, Weight Control Methods, And Body Satisfaction In Elite Female Runners Competing At The 2020 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials, Sophia Charitou, Kelly Pritchett, Dana Ogan, Abigail Larson
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 15(2): 721-732, 2022. Athletes participating in endurance sports report frequent attempts to lose weight and greater training volumes in attempt to gain a competitive advantage. Increased exercise energy expenditure through training, weight periodization, and prevalence of eating disorder (ED) may affect energy availability. Low energy availability (LEA) is associated with negative physiological effects and an increased risk of bone fractures and illness in athletes. This study investigated the relationship between self-reported history of an ED with training, body satisfaction, and weight-control methods among female Olympic marathon trials participants. Female runners (n = 146; 30.8 …

Modeling Empirical Stock Market Behavior Using A Hybrid Agent-Based Dynamical Systems Model, Daniel A. Cline, Grant T. Aguinaldo, Christian Lemp
Northeast Journal of Complex Systems (NEJCS)
We describe the development and calibration of a hybrid agent-based dynamical systems model of the stock market that is capable of reproducing empirical market behavior. The model consists of two types of trader agents, fundamentalists and noise traders, as well as an opinion dynamic for the latter (optimistic vs. pessimistic). The trader agents switch types stochastically over time based on simple behavioral rules. A system of ordinary differential equations is used to model the stock price as a function of the states of the trader agents. We show that the model can reproduce key stylized facts (e.g., volatility clustering and …
Evaluating The Brain-Enhancing Mitohormesis Of N-Propargylglycine, A Suicide Inhibitor Of Proline Dehydrogenase, To Offset The Proteotoxic Mechanisms Underlying Neurodegeneration In Huntington’S Disease And Evaluating The Phenotype Of A Mutant Pdia3 Knock-In Mouse Line As A Novel Genetic Model Of Neurological Disorders, Fadzai Teramayi
Natural Sciences and Mathematics | Biological Sciences Master's Theses
Huntington’s Disease (HD) is characterized by atrophy of the striatal and cerebral cortical neurons producing a variety of severe, and life-shortening neurologic symptoms including motor dysfunction, cognitive decline, psychiatric disturbances, and weight loss. As with other life-threatening neurodegenerative disorders, HD has no effective treatment capable of preventing or mitigating its underlying hallmark, subcellular and pathogenetic mechanism, that is, proteotoxicity. While it has been suggested that inducing brain mitohormesis might offer a promising therapeutic strategy, to date, no brain-penetrating mitohormesis-inducing agent has yet been identified or tested in any neurodegenerative disease mouse model. Recently, N-propargylglycine (N-PPG) was shown …

Embodiments of the invention are directed to methods and systems for telephonic payment credential collection. A user, via a communication device 101, can establish a telephonic connection to a client device (e.g., associated with a resource provider) to initiate a transaction. The client device can join an automated payment collection assistant (APCA) application 102 to prompt the user for fields relating to a payment device, translate the fields into text, and authenticate the speech of the user (e.g., by comparing the voice of the user with a stored biometric voice print previously provided by the user). Data relating to the …
Mechanism To Enhance Security Of The Quic Based Communication, Niranjan M M
Mechanism To Enhance Security Of The Quic Based Communication, Niranjan M M
Defensive Publications Series
Quick UDP Internet Connections (QUIC) is based on UDP/HTTP and TLS. While TLS provides adequate security, it is not very far to crack it with the increasing compute power of the devices, as TLS is based on Public Key Infrastructure (private/public key) methods, where-in keys are derived mathematically. As we know, asymmetric encryption (PKI) methods are not immune to cryptanalysis attacks from quantum computers, whereas symmetric encryption (with sufficiently large key sizes) is immune to cryptanalysis attacks. Hence there is renewed interest in symmetric encryption methods to deploy quantum secure networks. In short, currently QUIC uses TLS based method to …
Compliant Coherent Module Functional Management, Anonymous
Compliant Coherent Module Functional Management, Anonymous
Defensive Publications Series
The present disclosure relates to compliant coherent module functional management. As network operators disaggregate the purchasing of network elements and co-resident modular coherent technology, it is now important to control the behavior of the pluggable coherent module to match the known-good configuration that has been validated and approved for deployment. Network operators wish to have a single product usable for deployments generally across any/all network equipment. However, different network platforms place different and unique requirements on the pluggable modem. Such unique requirements must be verified and validated at the system level, and once verified, network operators would want to avoid …
Finding A Closest Match For An Elf File Based On Proximity Matching Of Extracted Identifiers, Armijn Hemel
Finding A Closest Match For An Elf File Based On Proximity Matching Of Extracted Identifiers, Armijn Hemel
Defensive Publications Series
A common task for companies is to find the provenance of binary files that they receive from an upstream source. Several methods exist to fingerprint a binary, including string searches, looking at function names, using code clone detection, and so on. Some of these methods use a scoring mechanism or chop a file up in smaller pieces, compute a hash and look hashes up in a database. This document describes a method to turn a sequence of strings and other identifiers into a locality sensitive hash using TLSH, which can then be searched in a special datastructure called Vantage Point …

Improving Point Of Load Efficiency By Decreasing Inductor Series Resistance, Joel Goergen, Kami Hurst, Mary Kathryn Laue, Shobhana Punjabi
Defensive Publications Series
The manufacturers of electronic devices are constantly searching for efficiency improvements in point-of-load (POL) devices. To address that need, techniques are presented herein that support using low-cost graphite powder to improve inductor series resistance and conductivity. Under aspects of the presented techniques, multi-layer graphene may also be used to achieve significantly higher efficiency gains. It is anticipated that application of the presented techniques will yield a nominal gain of between 0.1% and 0.2%, which is significant when such a solution is applied to the many POLs that reside within a single design and across the millions of units that are …
