Dryland River Restoration Via Carnivore Reintroduction: Nonnative Fauna Dominate Diets Of River Otters Reintroduced To The Upper Rio Grande, Gabriela A. Wolf-Gonzalez, Sean M. Murphy, Matthew T. Springer, John T. Cox May 2022

Dryland River Restoration Via Carnivore Reintroduction: Nonnative Fauna Dominate Diets Of River Otters Reintroduced To The Upper Rio Grande, Gabriela A. Wolf-Gonzalez, Sean M. Murphy, Matthew T. Springer, John T. Cox

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Dryland rivers often harbor abundant populations of nonnative species that threaten native fauna and negatively alter ecosystem structure and function. Native semiaquatic carnivores, such as river otters (Lontra canadensis), that could predate nonnative fauna have been extirpated from many dryland rivers. During 2008–2010, river otters were reintroduced to the Upper Rio Grande (URG), a principal dryland river in the arid southwestern USA that has been colonized by dozens of nonnative fish and invertebrates. We conducted a scat-based food habits study and investigated whether otter reintroduction could be useful for managing nonnative aquatic fauna via predation. Across seasons, nonnative …

Introduction

Cardiac valvular diseases (CVDs) are the major cause of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality globally, with predominance of rheumatic heart disease (RHD) in developing countries. Congenital heart defects (CHD) diagnoses are delayed due to socioeconomic factors. This study aims to evaluate the post-operative surgical outcomes of CHD and valvular RHD.

Methods

This study is conducted with 50 patients from Chad, operated on between 2003 and 2012. Post-operative outcomes are evaluated from 2010 to 2012.

Results

With the follow-up of 19 RHD patients who underwent plasty, 8 (42.1%) had no complications, 4 (21%) presented with mild regurgitation, 7 (36.8%) required re-operation …

Sex Differences And Cognitive Maps: Studies In The Lab Don’T Always Reflect Cognitive Map Accuracy In Everyday Life, Chantelle M. Cocquyt, Nicole Youngson, Jennifer E. Sutton May 2022

Sex Differences And Cognitive Maps: Studies In The Lab Don’T Always Reflect Cognitive Map Accuracy In Everyday Life, Chantelle M. Cocquyt, Nicole Youngson, Jennifer E. Sutton

Neuroscience Institute Publications

The ability to create an accurate mental survey representation, or cognitive map, when moving through an environment varies widely across individuals, and we are still trying to understand the origins of these individual differences. Non-immersive virtual environments used to test for cognitive map accuracy in the laboratory have shown sex differences with a performance advantage for men in some studies but not others. When sex differences are demonstrated, it is unclear whether women’s performance generalizes to familiar and unfamiliar real-world environments. In Experiment 1, 98 participants explored the virtual environment Silcton and afterwards estimated directions between the landmarks in Silcton …

Center for Health Services Research Faculty Publications

Background

There is a dearth of research on successful interventions to improve nurse-physician communication (NPC). An important step is identifying what matters to bedside nurses and their perceptions of effective NPC communications and actions.

Methods

We conducted three focus groups with a total of 19 medical unit nurses across two hospitals in one academic medical center in the United States. Using a convenience sampling strategy, five to eight nurses voluntarily participated in each focus group. The recording was transcribed verbatim and two independent coders performed coding and resolved any discrepancies in codes. Qualitative content analysis was pursued to identify themes …

Comparing Relative And Absolute Reliability Of Short Versus Long Narrative Retells, Jenna Hollis May 2022

Comparing Relative And Absolute Reliability Of Short Versus Long Narrative Retells, Jenna Hollis

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the current study was to examine and compare relative and absolute reliability estimates between brief, linguistically compact narrative retells and longer, more linguistically diffuse narrative retells. The participants included 190 school-age children in firstsixth grade from Utah, Arizona, and Colorado. Participants completed two brief narrative retells using the Narrative Language Measures (NLM) Listening subtest of the CUBED assessment and one longer narrative retell using the wordless picture book Frog, Where Are You? (FWAY). These language samples were then analyzed for language productivity, complexity, and story grammar elements using the Systematic Analysis of Language Transcripts software program and …

Strategies To Improve The Use Of Live Synchronous Meetings In Blended, Remote, And Online Courses, Patrick R. Lowenthal, Mickinzie Johnson May 2022

Strategies To Improve The Use Of Live Synchronous Meetings In Blended, Remote, And Online Courses, Patrick R. Lowenthal, Mickinzie Johnson

Educational Technology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Distance education over the years has been defined by the ability of students to learn at any time, from anywhere. Thus, it is not surprising that most online courses rely solely on asynchronous text-based online communication, such as email and discussion forums. However, the COVID- 19 pandemic and the rise of emergency remote teaching have sparked an increased interest in using web conferencing software (e.g., Zoom, WebEx, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams) to hold live synchronous meetings, often on a set day and time each week, instead of asynchronous discussions. But as convenient as it can be to move classroom instruction …

The Lasting Effects Of The Pandemic On Graduate And Professional Education, Robert Kelchen May 2022

The Lasting Effects Of The Pandemic On Graduate And Professional Education, Robert Kelchen

Journal of Student Financial Aid

The coronavirus pandemic caused a shift in the American higher education system. Many institutions switched from in-person to virtual platforms. Since graduate and professional students are more likely than undergraduate students to enroll in a hybrid or online program, they were less affected by the transition to online education. However, the decrease in undergraduate enrollment during the pandemic further squeezed institutional finances showing a decline in international graduate enrollment in the United States. As universities place additional scrutiny on program finances, departments will face pressure to reduce the number of assistantships that are not supported by external grants and contracts, …

Current And Future Biomarkers In Multiple Sclerosis, Jennifer Yang, Maysa Hamade, Qi Wu, Qin Wang, Robert Axtell, Shailendra Giri, Yang Mao-Draayer

Neurology Articles

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a debilitating autoimmune disorder. Currently, there is a lack of effective treatment for the progressive form of MS, partly due to insensitive readout for neurodegeneration. The recent development of sensitive assays for neurofilament light chain (NfL) has made it a potential new biomarker in predicting MS disease activity and progression, providing an additional readout in clinical trials. However, NfL is elevated in other neurodegenerative disorders besides MS, and, furthermore, it is also confounded by age, body mass index (BMI), and blood volume. Additionally, there is considerable overlap in the range of serum NfL (sNfL) levels compared …

Transcriptional Analysis Of Maize Under Drought Stress And The Impact Of Plant Maturity, Oliver J. Oviedo May 2022

Transcriptional Analysis Of Maize Under Drought Stress And The Impact Of Plant Maturity, Oliver J. Oviedo

Biology ETDs

Climate change related drought is projected to harm maize production. Water use strategies can help mitigate the impact of drought on crop yield. However, little is known about maize metabolic response to drought at different developmental stages. To shed light on this, drought conditions were applied to maize at the six-leaf stage (V6), twelve leaf stage (V12), and tassel stage (VT). V6 and VT took eight days to achieve a low stomatal conductance threshold, but V12 took 16 days. Differential gene expression analysis of the transcriptome indicates that V6 showed the most response with 53 impacted metabolic pathways, many of …

Inheritance, Katherin Machalek May 2022

Inheritance, Katherin Machalek

Theses and Dissertations

Inheritance is a feature documentary that investigates the concept of spiritual inheritance, that which is passed from parent to child. More precisely, it examines how the experiences and struggles of an individual may be transferred and reprocessed by their children. Life experience is studied not as personal, but rather a continuous process that transcends the parent and projects onto the children. The film is a hybrid composed of experimental sequences and false starts, which all bring attention to the nuances of a not-so-straightforward story. The film begins as an essay focusing on an investigation into my parents’ divorce with the …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Grape disease is a significant contributory factor to the decline in grape yield, typically affecting the leaves first. Efficient identification of grape leaf diseases remains a critical unmet need. To mitigate background interference in grape leaf feature extraction and improve the ability to extract small disease spots, by combining the characteristic features of grape leaf diseases, we developed a novel method for disease recognition and classification in this study. First, Gaussian filters Sobel smooth de-noising Laplace operator (GSSL) was employed to reduce image noise and enhance the texture of grape leaves. A novel network designated coordinated attention shuffle mechanism-asymmetric multi-scale …

Creating Alternative Narratives Of Educational Policy: Using Foucauldian Archaelogy To Contextualize Neoliberal Policy, Barrett Schwarz May 2022

Creating Alternative Narratives Of Educational Policy: Using Foucauldian Archaelogy To Contextualize Neoliberal Policy, Barrett Schwarz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation follows a three-article format that build upon each other to examine and analyze how the Complete College Tennessee Act of 2010 (CCTA) both emerges from and reinforces a broader project of neoliberal reform within institutions of higher education through a Foucauldian Archaeologic framework. The first article unpacks and examines the functioning of the CCTA through common methodologies for policy analysis. Through this examination, the first article also highlights how these methodologies for policy analysis miss certain aspects for the functioning and flowing of power through the CCTA within a broader neoliberal context. The second article unpacks and examines …
