Spatio-Temporal Variability In Drifting Fish Aggregating Device (Dfad) Beaching Events In The Seychelles Archipelago, Isla Macmillan, Martin J. Attrill, Taha Imzilen, Christophe Lett, Simon Walmsley, Clarus Chu, David M. Kaplan May 2022

Spatio-Temporal Variability In Drifting Fish Aggregating Device (Dfad) Beaching Events In The Seychelles Archipelago, Isla Macmillan, Martin J. Attrill, Taha Imzilen, Christophe Lett, Simon Walmsley, Clarus Chu, David M. Kaplan

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Abstract Purse-seine fisheries use drifting Fish Aggregating Devices (dFADs), human-made floating objects, to facilitate the capture of tropical tunas. Currently, the majority of dFADs are constructed primarily of highly durable non-biodegradable materials and there is no legal obligation to recover dFADs after deployment, leading to beaching events and potentially negative environmental impacts. We assessed beachings as a function of intra- and inter-annual trends, water depth, distance from land, seasonality, and benthic habitat within the local context of the Seychelles Archipelago using trajectories of dFADs deployed by French purse seiners over 2008–2020. Overall, 3842 beaching events associated with 2371 distinct dFAD …

A Review Of Factors Influencing The Quality And Sensory Evaluation Techniques Applied To Greek Yogurt, Rabin Gyawali, Xi Feng, Yan Ping Chen, Jose M. Lorenzo, Salam A. Ibrahim

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Greek yogurt is one of the fastest growing products in the dairy industry. It is also known as strained yogurt, which is obtained after draining the whey. As a result of the draining process, Greek yogurt has higher total solids and lower lactose than regular yogurt. Since it is a concentrated yogurt, its sensory characteristics are different from regular yogurt. However, there is little information about factors influencing the quality of Greek yogurt and sensory evaluation techniques applied to Greek yogurt. This review aims to describe the effects of ingredients, starter cultures, processing techniques and other parameters on quality characteristics …

A Concise Synthetic Method For Constructing 3-Substituted Piperazine-2-Acetic Acid Esters From 1,2-Diamines, Srinivas Chamakuri, Sunny Ann Tang, Kevin A Tran, Shiva Krishna Reddy Guduru, Peter K Bolin, Kevin R Mackenzie, Damian W Young

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

We report a short synthetic route for synthesizing 2,3-substituted piperazine acetic acid esters. Optically pure amino acids were efficiently converted into 1,2-diamines that could be utilized to deliver the title 2,3-substituted piperazines in five steps with a high enantiomeric purity. The novel route facilitated, for the first time, the synthesis of 3-phenyl substituted-2-piperazine acetic acid esters that were difficult to achieve using other methods; however, in this case, the products underwent racemization.

MAF1, a key repressor of RNA polymerase (pol) III-mediated transcription, has been shown to promote mesoderm formation in vitro. Here, we show that MAF1 plays a critical role in regulating osteoblast differentiation and bone mass. Global deletion of MAF1 (Maf1-/- mice) produced a high bone mass phenotype. However, osteoblasts isolated from Maf1-/- mice showed reduced osteoblastogenesis ex vivo. Therefore, we determined the phenotype of mice overexpressing MAF1 in cells from the mesenchymal lineage (Prx1-Cre;LSL-MAF1 mice). These mice showed increased bone mass. Ex vivo, cells from these mice showed enhanced osteoblastogenesis concordant with their high …

A Pan-Canadian Comparison Of Cyanobacteria Bloom Management Policies, Programs, And Practices, Rebecca Gasman May 2022

A Pan-Canadian Comparison Of Cyanobacteria Bloom Management Policies, Programs, And Practices, Rebecca Gasman

International Conference on Toxic Cyanobacteria (2022)

Across the globe, reports of cyanobacteria blooms are on the rise. The increasing occurrence of cyanobacteria blooms and cyanotoxins is attributed to phosphorous (P) loading, climate change, among a mix of other factors. While eutrophic lakes have a higher risk of blooms, oligotrophic and mesotrophic lakes are also experiencing blooms. This means governments’ need to develop a robust cyanobacteria management strategy (prevent, control, and mitigate) to protect public health. In Canada, water management is a shared responsibility among the federal, provincial, and local governments; however, cyanobacteria management is mainly a provincial and local government responsibility. This research compares and contrasts …

Near-Real-Time Cyanobacterial Identification And Cell Counts Using Artificial Intelligence And Digital Microscopy, Igor Mrdjen, Bryan Arndt, Christopher Nack

International Conference on Toxic Cyanobacteria (2022)

Current methods of cyanobacteria monitoring rely heavily on laboratory analysis or sensor and/or fluoroprobe systems. These methods can prohibit frequent and efficient monitoring due to expense and logistical challenges (sample shipment to lab, analysis by expert, need for microscopy to ID cyanobacteria). Here, we present a cellphone-based microscopy method to rapidly identify and enumerate cyanobacterial concentrations. In this study, digital imaging microscopes were deployed to eight (8) volunteers across Wisconsin and New York. Volunteers collected cyanobacterial samples and images using the provided digital microscope. Images were emailed to a trained scientist, for cyanobacterial cell ID and processing of cyanobacterial counts. …

Refinements Of The Qpcr And Rt-Qpcr Detection Assays For Detecting Microcystin Producers: An Early Warning System For Microcystin Production, Nathan D. Sienkiewicz

International Conference on Toxic Cyanobacteria (2022)

The frequent occurrence of CHABs is a threat to human and ecological health by their toxin products, particularly Microcystin. Microcystin is the most common cyanotoxin produced, with the major toxin-producing genera during CHABs being Microcystis and Planktothrix. Previously, we’ve demonstrated that qPCR and RT-qPCR can be used as an early warning detection system for microcystin production in fresh surface waters. However, to form a more robust detection system, certain PCR methods need to be defined and validated. For example, target nucleic acid concentrations and biomass derived from environmental samples can range from low levels (undetectable) to extremely high levels …

Investigation Of Novel Chemical In-Situ Treatment Methods To Mitigate Cyanobacteria Harmful Algal Blooms In Surface Waters, Eleni Keliri, Panayiota Adamou, Maria G. Antoniou

International Conference on Toxic Cyanobacteria (2022)

As water scarcity is becoming a universal problem to address, it is essential to maintain a high surface water quality and protect the biodiversity of current aquatic biotopes worldwide. Surface water contamination events caused by high nutrient and organic matter loads lead to the formation of cyano-HABs, which are mostly unpredictable. Therefore, highly efficient methods are required for the in-situ restoration of water quality. Several methods have been applied over the years to mitigate cyano-HABs with varying efficiencies. Current trends ask for more environmentally friendly approaches to be implemented in order to safeguard the overall aquatic ecosystems and reduce treatment …

A Walmart With No Televisions, Samuel A. Bickford May 2022

A Walmart With No Televisions, Samuel A. Bickford

LSU Master's Theses

A Walmart with No Televisions is a deconstructed novel about the perils and heartbreak of adolescent drug addiction. What begins as a fad, a social affectation, quickly becomes a guiding light. The novel illustrates hope as a potentiality, and escape from oneself as something always in question. Happiness is uncertain, but the experience is not.

The Operation Successful, But The Patient Died. The Gradual Elimination Of The Central European Peasantry In The Light Of Globalization And Interwar Processes, Janos Fritz

Journal of Global Awareness

In terms of “depeasantisation," it was with the EU accession in 2004 when Central Europe – including Hungary – reached the stage where England had already arrived in the 18th and Germany in the 19th century. The gradual disappearance of the peasantry in the continent is doubtless in connection with the tendencies of globalization, a phenomenon that could not be stopped even by the authoritarian regimes of the interwar period – the time period examined by the dissertation. However, in a latent way, the question had already arisen at the time: is peasantry necessary at all? Nevertheless, as a consequence …

Journal of Global Awareness

Short-term faculty-led study abroad programs are high-impact pedagogical practices designed to enhance students' global competency. However, there is a gap in our understanding regarding the specific educational components of short-term faculty-led study abroad programs that promote global competency. This systematic review examined nearly two decades of research on such programs (n=86) to assess the educational components associated with increases in students' global competencies using Steinberg's (2017) educational components as a framework. Results indicated that the educational components included in global competency-building education abroad courses varied substantially across programs and global regions. The components most strongly supporting enhanced global competency were …

A Note On Volcanism And The Book Of Mormon, Matt Roper May 2022

A Note On Volcanism And The Book Of Mormon, Matt Roper

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

The account of the great destruction at the death of Christ in Third Nephi relates that many cities at the time were destroyed by fire (3 Nephi 8:14; 9:3, 9–11). In an article published in 1998, geologist Bart Kowallis argued that the destructive events, including the burning of cities described there, are consistent with the effects of a significant volcanic event. The volcanic interpretation fits particularly well in a Mesoamerican setting where volcanic events are historically common. Additional support for this interpretation can be found in Mormon’s description of the aftermath of these events. In his abridgement of the subsequent …
