“Before my hearing for my order of protection, I knew that he would try to contact me through other people, send me flowers, send presents to the kids, and all of those things will make me feel powerless when I have to go into court and see him face-to-face. I knew after all of that I would tell the judge that I changed my mind and that I am going to give him another chance. But being on the screen, I tell you, gave me a sense of empowerment. When the judge asked me if I wanted an order of …

Manufacturers today need to optimize their fabrication runtime decision by meeting short customer order due dates externally and managing the potentially unreliable machines and manufacturing processes internally. Outsourcing and overtime are commonly utilized strategies to expedite fabricating time. Additionally, detailed analyses and necessary actions on inevitable product defects (i.e., removal of scraps) and equipment breakdowns (such as machine repairing) are prerequisites to fabrication runtime planning. Motivated by assisting today’s manufacturers decide the best batch runtime plan under the situations mentioned above, this study applies mathematical modeling to a hybrid fabrication problem that incorporates partial overtime and outsourcing, inevitable product defects, …

Prevalence Of Preterm Birth And Risk Factors Associated With It At Different Gestational Ages: A Multicenter Retrospective Survey In China, Yi-Jie Zhang, Yan Zhu, Li Zhu, Cheng-Qiu Lu, Chao Chen, Lin Yuan
Saudi Medical Journal
Objectives: To investigate the prevalence of preterm birth (PTB) and the risk factors for different gestational age subgroups of preterm birth in China. Methods: We carried out a descriptive cross-sectional study encompassing all singleton live births (24 +0 to 41 +6 weeks) with completed data in 23 provinces in China from 2010 to 2017 during investigation period. We compared both the preterm group (24 +0 to 36 +6 weeks) and preterm subgroups (<32 weeks, 32 +0 to 33 +6 weeks, and 34 +0 t0 36 +6 weeks) with the term group (37 +0 to 41 +6 weeks). We collected information on maternal and fetal characteristics from medical records. Logistic regression was use. Results: The prevalence of PTB was 7.4% (15,833/215,254) in singleton births. After adjusting for maternal age, parity, and potential risk factors in univariate analysis, the high-risk factors for PTB at <32 weeks were placental abruption (aOR=41.52; 95% CI, 25.89–66.58), placenta previa (aOR=40.04; 95% CI, 32.00–50.09), chorioamnionitis (aOR=11.06; 95% CI, 8.738–14.02), and hypertension disorders in pregnancy (HDP) (aOR=3.564; 95% CI, 2.930–4.335). Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) was significantly associated with PTB at 34–36 weeks (aOR=5.763; 95% CI, 5.049–6.577), particularly with spontaneous PTB (aOR=10.04; 95% CI, 8.79–11.47). Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) was significantly associated with PTB at 34–36 weeks only (aOR=1.156; 95% CI, 1.054–1.267). Conclusion: Placental abruption, placenta previa, chorioamnionitis, and HDP were more predictive of early PTB; GDM and ICP were more predictive of late PTB.

This paper concerns the business of law, a subject ignored by legal academia and sugarcoated by the organized bar. If law professors express little or no interest in this subject, their students most certainly do. Indeed, I have found that students are desperately hungry for information on the day-to-day realities of working in a law firm. Students are especially keen to learn about possible paths for career advancement within firms, across them, or across the organizations served by the firms.
Paths for career advancement do exist, but they are not easy to find or pursue. Law firms are hardly going …

Corpus Linguistics Criticisms Of Heller Misuse Corpus Linguistics, Michael Showalter
SMU Law Review Forum
A number of linguistics experts have asserted that new corpus-linguistics evidence undermines the U.S. Supreme Court’s conclusion in District of Columbia v. Heller that the Second Amendment phrase keep and bear arms means to possess and carry weapons. At the time of ratification, the term bear arms carried both an idiomatic sense meaning “to serve as a soldier” and a literal sense meaning “to carry weapons.” The Heller majority concluded that the Second Amendment uses the literal sense, partly because the idiomatic reading has the absurd implication of causing the Amendment to protect a right to serve as a soldier. …

The protective human antibody response to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) focuses on the spike (S) protein, which decorates the virion surface and mediates cell binding and entry. Most SARS-CoV-2 protective antibodies target the receptor-binding domain or a single dominant epitope ("supersite") on the N-terminal domain (NTD). Using the single B cell technology called linking B cell receptor to antigen specificity through sequencing (LIBRA-Seq), we isolated a large panel of NTD-reactive and SARS-CoV-2-neutralizing antibodies from an individual who had recovered from COVID-19. We found that neutralizing antibodies against the NTD supersite were commonly encoded by the IGHV1-24 gene, …

Background: Clinical decision-making for patients with stage I lung cancer is complex. It involves multiple options (lobectomy, segmentectomy, wedge, Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy, thermal ablation), weighing multiple outcomes (e.g., short-, intermediate-, long-term) and multiple aspects of each (e.g., magnitude of a difference, the degree of confidence in the evidence, and the applicability to the patient and setting at hand). A structure is needed to summarize the relevant evidence for an individual patient and to identify which outcomes have the greatest impact on the decision-making.
Methods: Based on a systematic review from 2000-2021, evidence regarding relevant outcomes was assembled, with attention to …

Direct images of protoplanets embedded in disks around infant stars provide the key to understanding the formation of gas giant planets such as Jupiter. Using the Subaru Telescope and the Hubble Space Telescope, we find evidence for a Jovian protoplanet around AB Aurigae orbiting at a wide projected separation (~93 au), probably responsible for multiple planet-induced features in the disk. Its emission is reproducible as reprocessed radiation from an embedded protoplanet. We also identify two structures located at 430–580 au that are candidate sites of planet formation. These data reveal planet formation in the embedded phase and a protoplanet discovery …

Movement and Being: The Journal of the Christian Society for Kinesiology, Leisure and Sports Studies
The field of sports has multiple segments including youth, recreational, college, and professional sport. Research in these areas have produced an abundance of inquiries discussing several managerial function and capacity topics such as finance, marketing, organizational effectiveness, and leadership. While these topics have been applied to many segments of the sport world, the niche segment of sports ministry has not seen these applications. Sports ministers have challenges in that they manage all aspects of the sports programs they provide to the community, but they also supply the resources and support toward the ministry within these programs.
The current research fills …

Architectural Engineering
In this studio we investigated the design and construction of a shell structure through form finding, form testing, and form making. By using a physics-based approach through Kangaroo on Grasshopper, we were able to create a form that minimized tension in the shell. Once a form was found, testing followed through full-scale construction. An iterative process between architectural engineering students and architecture students helped to create a realistic and elegant design.

Urbanization disrupts landscapes and ecosystem functions, which poses threats to biodiversity, social systems, and human health, particularly among vulnerable populations. Urban land-use planners are faced with competing demands for housing, safety, transportation, and economic development and often lack tools to integrate these with protecting environmental functions. We identify three major barriers to integrating the benefits that flow with connected, functioning ecosystems into land-use planning. The lack of a shared language among planners and stakeholders poses a barrier to the restoration and preservation of ecological features. Methods of incorporating the benefits from connectivity are not standardized because values are not readily …

Steel Bridge Coating Inventory For 2022, Christopher Goff, Sudhir Palle
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) has replaced the lead-based coatings on many of its steel bridges over the past 30 years. In the 1980s and 1990s, inorganic zinc primers with vinyl topcoats were the go-to option for coating replacement projects. Since 2000, the typical choice for these projects has been organic zinc primers that are part of a two- or three-coat system. Some of these coatings have localized failures in high-stress areas. KYTC’s current inventory of steel bridges numbers over 1,100 structures. Accounting for expected service lives, to properly maintain protective coatings on these bridges will require the Cabinet to …

Background
With rapidly advancing global warming and the concomitant disruptive effects on life on Earth, documenting species is urgent (Ceballos et al., 2020). Taxonomists are keenly aware that they must do all that they can to document species before their demise. As of 2012, the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN, 1999; 2012) began to allow electronic publication of nomenclatural acts (resulting in the official naming of animal species).
Problem
Even though 10 years have passed since changes to the codification regarding the registration of animal species names, repository managers and animal taxonomists may not be collaborating to their fullest …

Articles
Narratives of trauma told by clients and communities of color have inspired an increasing number of civil rights and antiracist lawyers and academics to call for more trauma-informed training for law students and lawyers. These advocates have argued not only for greater trauma-sensitive practices and trauma-centered interventions on behalf of adversely impacted individuals and groups but also for greater awareness of the risks of secondary or vicarious trauma for lawyers who represent traumatized clients and communities. In this Article, we join this chorus of attorneys and academics. Harnessing the recent civil rights case of P.P. v. Compton Unified School District, …

Evaluation Of An Equivalent Mean Grain Size Diameter To Rationally Predict The Erodibility Of Fine Riverbed Soils In Nebraska, Basil Abualshar
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The erosion of riverbed soils under the bridges is one of the major reasons that cause bridge closure or failure leading to a significant effect on the local economy. One of the commonly used methods to predict the erosion rate of soils is the excess shear stress method, which is based on two parameters describing the erodibility behavior; the erodibility coefficient and the critical shear stress. On the other hand, studies showed that the mean grain size diameter D50 could be correlated to the erosion resistance of soils, usually for cohesionless soils but not for cohesive soils. It is …

Standalone Wireless Humming Music Synthesizer, Elizaveta Viktorovna Koush, Conrad Kinsey, Alberto Munoz
Electrical Engineering
This project, called a standalone wireless humming music synthesizer, aimed to provide a tool for musicians to make creating music easier. It did this by removing learning barriers and adding an assistive functionality element that current synthesizers fail to address.
Existing methods for synthesizers typically include a keyboard or some collection of buttons to play melodies on. This requires the knowledge of music theory and a learning curve for the instrument, and this device aims to tackle this barrier. A device that can synthesize your voice into high-quality audio removes this musical knowledge barrier and allows anyone to easily convert …
