Theoretical Studies Of A Silica Functionalized Acrylamide For Calcium Scale Inhibition, Abdulmujeeb T. Onawole, Ibnelwaleed A. Hussein, Mohammed A. Saad, Nadhem Ismail, Ali Alshami, Mustafa S. Nasser

Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications

The calcium carbonate (CaCO3) scale is one of the most common oilfield scales and oil and gas production bane. CaCO3 scale can lead to a sudden halt in production or, worst-case scenario, accidents; therefore, CaCO3 scale formation prevention is essential for the oil and gas industry. Scale inhibitors are chemicals that can mitigate this problem. We used two popular theoretical techniques in this study: Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics (AIMD). The objective was to investigate the inhibitory abilities of mixed oligomers, specifically acrylamide functionalized silica (AM-Silica). DFT studies indicate that Ca2+ does not bind readily to …

The Racist Roots Of The War On Drugs And The Myth Of Equal Protection For People Of Color, André Douglas Pond Cummings, Steven A. Ramirez Jun 2022

The Racist Roots Of The War On Drugs And The Myth Of Equal Protection For People Of Color, André Douglas Pond Cummings, Steven A. Ramirez

University of Arkansas at Little Rock Law Review

By 2021, the costs and pain arising from the propagation of the American racial hierarchy reached such heights that calls for anti-racism and criminal justice reform dramatically expanded. The brutal murder of George Floyd by the Minneapolis police vividly proved that the social construction of race in America directly conflicted with supposed American values of equal protection under law and notions of basic justice. The racially-driven War on Drugs (WOD) fuels much of the dissonance between American legal mythology—such as the non-discrimination principle and the impartial administration of the rule of law—and the reality of race in the United States. …

The Concept Of Originality And Creativity In The Humanities, The Social Sciences And The Natural Sciences, Madelene Sta. Maria, Christopher Cruz, Maria Judy San Juan, Charisse Tan, Rajiv Amarnani

Asia-Pacific Journal of IP Management and Innovation

The study was conducted to determine how 21 experts in the discipline clusters of humanities, the social sciences and the natural sciences defined originality and creativity in terms of how these concepts are understood and realized in the production of works in their respective disciplines, what related copyright issues emerge related to these concepts, and how these two concepts are related. Through thematic qualitative analysis of in-depth interview data, findings suggest that while there may be converging ideas about originality and creativity among the discipline clusters, the way this concept is operationalized by each discipline significantly vary. The study is …

Developing Filipino Esl Learners’ Reading Performance Through Effort Praise: A Growth Mindset Reading Intervention, King Arman A. Calingasan, Sterling M. Plata

Journal of English and Applied Linguistics

The present study attempted to investigate whether praising the reading effort of Filipino struggling readers would lead to increased reading performance. A total of 60 seventh-grade students, initially categorized under the frustration-reading level from a public junior high school in Cotabato City, were invited to participate in this experimental research. The students completed the effort-ability and mindset surveys to group them based on their belief in the effort-ability relationship and their mindset on reading abilities. Next, they answered three reading comprehension tests with varying levels of difficulty. After getting a passing score on the first reading test, the students in …

Understanding The Phonological Strengths Of Children With Tourette Syndrome, Aileen Bautista, Allan Rey Villaverde, Rochelle Irene Lucas Jun 2022

Understanding The Phonological Strengths Of Children With Tourette Syndrome, Aileen Bautista, Allan Rey Villaverde, Rochelle Irene Lucas

Journal of English and Applied Linguistics

Tourette’s Syndrome (TS) is a neuropsychiatric disorder manifested in the form of motor and phonic tics (Thibault et al., 2007). Albeit the accumulating evidence shows how the condition affects people with TS, there appears to be a lack of studies that attempt to determine the advantages of children with TS, especially their phonological strengths. Informed by the innateness theory and biological determinism theory, this experimental research pursues to identify the phonological strengths of individuals with TS. Specifically, the analysis seeks to identify the phonemes uttered accurately and inaccurately by the three respondents. The study utilized Children’s Nonword Repetition (CNRep) as …

Speech Act Patterns In American And Filipino Online Selling Advertisements, Jeramie B. Landicho

Journal of English and Applied Linguistics

Recognizing the speech act patterns used by American and Filipino online sellers provide us with information on how they structure their descriptions and promotions in the field of advertising. Pragmatically, this also gives an array of information about their cultural contexts to understand the marketing strategies of those who are in the inner and outer circles in Kachru’s model. This study used a self-collected corpus of 30 American and 30 Filipino online selling advertisements on Facebook Marketplace. These advertisements were analyzed using the speech act theory. A descriptive method of analysis was also conducted to determine emojis/emoticons, recurring punctuation marks, …

Lexical And Grammatical Features Of Memoranda Of Agreement (Moa) On Academic Partnerships, Marilu Rañosa Madrunio Jun 2022

Lexical And Grammatical Features Of Memoranda Of Agreement (Moa) On Academic Partnerships, Marilu Rañosa Madrunio

Journal of English and Applied Linguistics

In the past decades, internationalization has become a byword in many educational institutions. Higher education institutions are aware that a means by which they can offer good quality education is by engaging in partnerships with international institutions. International linkages established by academic institutions have a wider reach such that teaching and learning, research, community, and extension programs may have an international flavor. In forging partnerships, institutions would sign an agreement called the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA), which stipulates provisions expected from the parties involved. Employing the framework of Johnson and Coulthard (2010) on the linguistic features of legal documents, the …

A Tale Of Language Ownership And Identity In A Multilingual Society: Revisiting Functional Nativeness, Loy Lising, Maria Lourdes S. Bautista

Journal of English and Applied Linguistics

The American occupation of the Philippines in 1898 saw the official installation of English into the nation’s linguistic ecology. Over a century since and through many socioeconomic developments and national language policies, English continues to thrive as the official second language. Given its privileged status as the medium of instruction alongside Filipino, it is often regarded as the language for upward social mobility and as a source of linguistic and social capital, which is instrumental in improving the socioeconomic plight of many Filipinos. Based on two data sets collected in 2017, this paper investigates Cebu- and Manila-based Filipino university students’ …

Journal of English and Applied Linguistics

This study aims to investigate the Noun Phrase (NP) attachment preference of English L2 learners in the Philippines when they process ambiguous relative clauses. To this end, 29 bilinguals at a private university in Manila were recruited, and a language background survey was conducted. Based on the survey results, they were divided into Filipino-dominant and Chinese-dominant groups. Then, they were asked to undergo a grammaticality judgment test to determine their English proficiency. Finally, a questionnaire was administered composed of 40 relative clauses containing of or with conditions. Results revealed that contrary to predictions, both the Filipino-dominant and the Chinese-dominant bilinguals …

The Next Frontier: The Arbitrability Of Intellectual Property Disputes, Daniel Hofilena Jun 2022

The Next Frontier: The Arbitrability Of Intellectual Property Disputes, Daniel Hofilena

Asia-Pacific Journal of IP Management and Innovation

Intellectual property rights (IPRs) are private rights and are only as strong as the means to enforce them. In this light, arbitration has been an increasingly attractive alternative for parties to resolve their disputes due to its efficiency, specialty, confidentiality, and deference to party autonomy. Arbitral awards can likewise be enforced across jurisdictions that are signatories to the New York Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards. However, the capability of parties to submit IPR matters to arbitration is sometimes limited by the State under its laws. This study will explore possible solutions to the arbitrability of …

Lacking Copyright: A Policy Brief On The Prohibition On The Public Education Sector Of The Philippines To Own Copyright And Its Consequences, Clifford C. Chan, Yasmine Lee R. Tadeo, Sheena T. Rima, Romeo Joshua Movido

Asia-Pacific Journal of IP Management and Innovation

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about numerous consequences upon the global community, whether socially or economically. The education sector has not been isolated from the effects of the pandemic, having to largely suspend face-to-face classes, its traditional approach to learning, in favor of alternative modalities in teaching. To ensure learning continuity despite the difficulties caused by the pandemic, the Department of Education - Philippines promulgated a series of DepEd Orders directing public and private schools to adopt alternative methods of learning such as online distance learning and the preparation of Self Learning Modules. The resort to the different learning modalities …

Repeated Exposure To Vocabulary Websites And Academic Vocabulary Retention By University Students In Japan, Josephine Mirador, Timothy H. Ellsworth Jun 2022

Repeated Exposure To Vocabulary Websites And Academic Vocabulary Retention By University Students In Japan, Josephine Mirador, Timothy H. Ellsworth

Journal of English and Applied Linguistics

More recent advances in technology-based language learning saw an increase in the number of specific websites to help students acquire target vocabulary. Although most of the websites are fun and get students “hooked into the learning process,” the question that needs addressing is whether or not the use of websites actually results in increased and long-term vocabulary improvement for learners. This paper reports on our findings from four phases of an investigation that attempted to determine whether two vocabulary websites worked to increase our students’ academic vocabulary. The procedure and findings will be presented alongside each of the four phases …

First Keynote Address: The Two Impeachments Of Donald J. Trump, Congressman Jamie Raskin Jun 2022

First Keynote Address: The Two Impeachments Of Donald J. Trump, Congressman Jamie Raskin

Missouri Law Review

I believe that violation of the Emoluments Clauses was the original sin of the Trump Administration, and it began essentially on the first day of Trump in office when he said he was not going to give up his more than 150 businesses. He was not going to stop doing business with foreign governments, and he was not taking any pledge about refusing to take money from the federal government. The Foreign Emoluments Clause states that no president, no federal official, may accept presents or emoluments – which are payments – offices or titles of any kind whatsoever from a …

The Constitutional (And Political) Safeguards Against Impeachment, Victoria Nourse Jun 2022

The Constitutional (And Political) Safeguards Against Impeachment, Victoria Nourse

Missouri Law Review

Will the Trump impeachments inspire a flurry of future presidential impeachments? Will the second Trump impeachment, which occurred after the President left office, spur impeachments of lesser, former government officials? These and other questions emerged during the 2022 Missouri Law Review Symposium and on the Senate floor during the Trump impeachment trials. I have argued that we can make an educated prognosis about these possibilities based on constitutional structure. I called this argument the “political safeguards” of impeachment in my recent book, The Impeachments of Donald Trump: An Introduction to Constitutional Argument. What I called political safeguards, invoking the great …

Rural Decentralization And Infant Mortality Among Select Indian States: A Preliminary Analysis, Nisha Bellinger Jun 2022

Rural Decentralization And Infant Mortality Among Select Indian States: A Preliminary Analysis, Nisha Bellinger

Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

In 1992 the 73rd amendment to the Indian constitution called on states to create and empower rural local governments. Despite the amendment, however, there is variation in the extent of decentralization of power from states to rural local governments in the country. How has this process of decentralization influenced health outcomes in India? The research note addresses this question by collecting preliminary data on political, administrative and fiscal decentralization and examining trends in different dimensions of decentralization and infant mortality rates among select states (Assam, Rajasthan, Kerala and Tamil Nadu) from 1994 to 2017. These states display disparities in the …

Changing Hands: Recommendations To Improve New York’S System Of Gubernatorial Succession, Fordham Law School Rule Of Law Clinic, Ian Bollag-Miller, Stevenson Jean, Maryam Sheikh, Frank Tamberino

Rule of Law Clinic

Despite the frequency with which the state’s highest executive offices have changed hands, New York is unprepared to deal with a panoply of issues relating to its constitution’s gubernatorial succession provisions. In this report, the Fordham Law School Rule of Law Clinic proposes reforms to address four principal issues with the existing gubernatorial succession provisions: gubernatorial inability, gubernatorial absence, lieutenant governor replacement, and the gubernatorial line of succession.
