Numerical Implementation And Validation Of A Viscoelastic-Plastic Material Model For Predicting Curing Induced Residual Stresses In Adhesive Bonded Joints, Akshat Agha, Fadi Abu-Farha

Publications

One of the main challenges in the joining of multi-material components is the assessment of the nature and magnitude of the residual stresses developing in the adhesive bond during the heat curing manufacturing process. Numerical modeling of these residual stresses can provide insights for making informed decisions related to (i) material substrate properties; (ii) adhesive properties i.e., low, medium, or high stiffness; (iii) bondline geometry i.e., bondline width and bead thickness; (iv) curing cycle characteristics; and (v) fixation design i.e., type, spacing, the number of joints. This work presents a cure history-dependent viscoelastic-plastic material description for the modeling of adhesive …

Study On The High-Quality Development Of Chinese Patents: From The Perspectives Of Law And Economy, Jie Zhang

Fordham Dissertations and Theses

With the change of China's economic development stage and industrial structure, as well as the evolution of global macroeconomic situation, China's patent system has been continuously improving, going through the course of introduction from abroad, legislation, and four times of amendment. China's scientific and technological innovation capacity has also been constantly advancing. At the new development stage, the model of "increasing quantity through incentives and improving quality through introduction" no longer suits the current Chinese economic level and social development. Patents have entered the stage of high-quality development. This dissertation attempts to analyze the development process …

Responsibility, Recognition And Representation: The Ethical Bases Of Truth Evaluation In Political Narrative Analysis, Paul Nesbitt-Larking Jun 2022

Responsibility, Recognition And Representation: The Ethical Bases Of Truth Evaluation In Political Narrative Analysis, Paul Nesbitt-Larking

Faculty Publications

Just as even the most personal of our narratives can ultimately be traced back to our communal pasts, so they are worked up, told, and retold through complex chains of sharing: Situated utterances, partial hearings and fractured representations circulate meanings and interpretations through relays of retelling as social agents listen to and tell their own and each other’s stories. Narrative political psychologists explore how the storied lives of political actors are both shaped by their historical and structured circumstances and reproduce their ongoing political agency. In such contexts, how do narrative political psychologists assess truth claims? Guided by a Critical …

There has been a recent surge in interest in the more accurate snow loss estimates for solar photovoltaic (PV) systems as large-scale deployments move into northern latitudes. Preliminary results show bifacial modules may clear snow faster than monofacial PV. This study analyzes snow losses on these two types of systems using empirical hourly data including energy, solar irradiation and albedo, and open-source image processing methods from images of the arrays in a northern environment in the winter. Projection transformations based on reference anchor points and snowless ground truth images provide reliable masking and optical distortion correction with fixed surveillance cameras. …

Bio-Inspired Fire-Resistant Building Materials, Ryan Lee Jun 2022

Bio-Inspired Fire-Resistant Building Materials, Ryan Lee

Materials Engineering

An increased frequency of fires in California motivates the development of fire damage mitigation strategies, including environmentally-friendly fire-resistant materials. A novel succulent-inspired sandwich composite consisting of HardiePlank (a cement-fiber composite), waxed paper, cardboard, paper, and mucilage (here labeled HPWM) is proposed. Sample manufacturing considerations were investigated, and the resulting composite design was evaluated for aging, mechanical, and flammability performance. Variability in sample manufacturing was assessed by measurements of sample weight before and after applying mucilage. Thermogravimetric analysis was conducted on sample materials to better understand thermal degradation. HPWM samples using two different types of waxed paper (soy wax, beeswax) were …

State-Dependent Activity Dynamics Of Hypothalamic Stress Effector Neurons, Aoi Ichiyama, Samuel Mestern, Gabriel B. Benigno, Kaela E. Scott, Brian L. Allman, Lyle Muller, Wataru Inoue

Neuroscience Institute Publications

The stress response necessitates an immediate boost in vital physiological functions from their homeostatic operation to an elevated emergency response. However, the neural mechanisms underlying this state-dependent change remain largely unknown. Using a combination of in vivo and ex vivo electrophysiology with computational modeling, we report that corticotropin releasing hormone (CRH) neurons in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVN), the effector neurons of hormonal stress response, rapidly transition between distinct activity states through recurrent inhibition. Specifically, in vivo optrode recording shows that under non-stress conditions, CRHPVN neurons often fire with rhythmic brief bursts (RB), which, somewhat counterintuitively, constrains firing …
