Cross-Issue Correlation Based Opinion Prediction In Cyber Argumentation, Md Mahfuzer Rahman, Xiaoqing "Frank" Liu, Joseph W. Sirrianni, Douglas J. Adams
Computer Science and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
One of the challenging problems in large scale cyber-argumentation platforms is that users often engage and focus only on a few issues and leave other issues under-discussed and under-acknowledged. This kind of non-uniform participation obstructs the argumentation analysis models to retrieve collective intelligence from the underlying discussion. To resolve this problem, we developed an innovative opinion prediction model for a multi-issue cyber-argumentation environment. Our model predicts users’ opinions on the non-participated issues from similar users’ opinions on related issues using intelligent argumentation techniques and a collaborative filtering method. Based on our detailed experimental results on an empirical dataset collected using …
Working In Space: The Final Frontier Of Remote Work, Alyson Clare Decker
Working In Space: The Final Frontier Of Remote Work, Alyson Clare Decker
Northern Illinois University Law Review
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, virtual workplaces have become much more common. But while advancements in technology have made remote work more accessible for many employees, jurisdictional confusion and varying state-specific employment regulations have made it extremely difficult for employers to switch from traditional in-person office settings to work-from-anywhere workplaces. In addition, taxation and mandatory workers’ compensation insurance requirements mean that employers often need to be registered to do business in any state they have employees in, making a truly remote workforce somewhat of a misnomer. However, as difficult as it might be for terrestrial employers to navigate our patchwork …

A Feminist Analysis Of Pelvic Exam Violence, Maya Parekh
A Feminist Analysis Of Pelvic Exam Violence, Maya Parekh
College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations
Gynecological violence is a pervasive global issue, though it has long been broadly neglected withinmedical institutions. One site of such violence is the pelvic exam. This thesis examines the issue of pelvic exam violence, mainly pelvic exams that are conducted by medical students on unconscious individuals without prior consent for training purposes. Utilizing a critical discourse analysis of medical journal articles written about pelvic exams and consent, this paper argues that the arguments of both proponents and opponents of explicit consent within the medical field uphold dominant power paradigms of racism and patriarchy within medical institutions and education. Additionally, while legislation …

With more and more people turning to bicycles as their main method of transportation every year, bike theft has become a pressing problem all around the world. Every year, millions of bicycles are stolen due to how ineffective current locking mechanisms are at protecting all the main components of a bike. Furthermore, the inefficiency of these locking mechanisms and the fear of bike theft continues to discourage potential users from buying a bike and using it to commute on a daily basis. Our team constructed a proof of concept for an automatic Smart Bike Rack which employs a three-point locking …

Nutrient Management For Recirculating Hydroponics, Noah J. Langenfeld, Lauren E. Payne, Bruce Bugbee
Hydroponics/Soilless Media
Steady-state nutrient management is essential in hydroponic culture. Determination of an appropriate refill solution is attained using the principle of mass balance. Optimizing the ratio of nutrient elements and refill solution concentrations requires an understanding of the ratio of nutrients in tissue to water, which is measured as water use efficiency (WUE). This ratio is then multiplied by the desired concentration of nutrients in leaf tissue to determine the refill solution composition. Deep-flow hydroponics enables constant monitoring of solution parameters and root health. We have achieved a steady-state nitrogen concentration in solution by using an automated pH control system that …

Nosocomial pathogens of the Acinetobacter calcoaceticus-baumannii (ACB) complex are a cautionary example for the world-wide spread of multi- and pan-drug resistant bacteria. Aiding the urgent demand for novel therapeutic targets, comparative genomics studies between pathogens and their apathogenic relatives shed light on the genetic basis of human-pathogen interaction. Yet, existing studies are limited in taxonomic scope, sensing of the phylogenetic signal, and resolution by largely analyzing genes independent of their organization in functional gene clusters. Here, we explored more than 3,000 Acinetobacter genomes in a phylogenomic framework integrating orthology-based phylogenetic profiling and microsynteny conservation analyses. We delineate gene clusters in …

Compelled Speech And The Regulatory State, Alan K. Chen
Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
Since the Supreme Court’s 1943 decision in West Virginia Board of Education v. Barnette, it has been axiomatic that the First Amendment prohibits the government not only from censoring speech, but also from compelling it. The central holding of Barnette itself is largely uncontroversial—it seems obvious that the First Amendment’s free speech clause means that no government may require people to espouse or reproduce an ideological statement against their will. But the Court has extended the compelled speech doctrine to stop the government from forcing people to make even truthful, factual statements. These claims have resulted in some of the …

The recent political history of Cameroon has been marked by an important civil disobedience movement (operation town) which almost brought down the State. Although this period of crisis has often been analysed, it must be mentioned that such analysis has not sufficiently highlighted the fact that “the operation ghost town” was strongly reported and most times promoted by the print media notably: Challenge Hebdo, Le Messager and La Nouvelle Expression. The present article seeks to analyse the relationship between the media and the political actors during the 1990s, to review the professional code of practice of journalism in …
