Kenya’S Path To Building A National System To End Female Genital Mutilation: A Learning Paper On Securing The Anti-Fgm Law, Establishing The Anti-Fgm Board And Sustaining The National Response, Shukri Gesod

Sexual and Reproductive Health, Rights, and Choices

Drawing on in-depth key informant interviews with three former or current government officials, this learning paper responds to the following questions:

  1. How did Kenya establish a standalone legal framework on female genital mutilation (FGM)?
  2. How was the political and wider support needed to advance the legislation built?
  3. How was the Anti-FGM Board established and made operational?
  4. How was the Anti-FGM Board sustained across political and institutional change?

Learnings from the government officials accounts are used to trace the history of Kenya’s anti-FGM response, and have been documented as lessons for other countries to apply toward their end-FGM efforts.

SR12813 is an experimental cholesterol-lowering drug that reduces intracellular cholesterol through accelerated proteasomal degradation of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase and is also recognized as a prototypical activator of the pregnane X receptor (PXR, NR1I2). Rifampicin, a clinically used antibiotic, likewise functions as a human PXR agonist. Although PXR-mediated induction of drug metabolism genes has been extensively characterized in hepatocytes and humanized mouse liver, comparatively little is known about the transcriptional effects of these ligands in intestinal and colon cancer cells. Here, we used RNA-sequencing in LS180 colon adenocarcinoma cells to compare transcriptional responses elicited by SR12813 and rifampicin. Both compounds induced …

After decades of denial and obstruction, the global Right is increasingly willing to acknowledge that climate change is a threat to lives and lifeways everywhere. Moreover, some seize on the specter of ecological collapse to advance fascistic politics. Mass shootings by White men who propose that eliminating racialized people will ease environmental pressures—including in Christchurch and El Paso—have been the most spectacular manifestations of this shift. But close observers note kindred shifts at borders and in boardrooms all across this planet, as far-right groups work not merely to “save the earth” but to save it for specific people, and from …

Human–Ai Interaction In Graduate Academic Work: A Job Demands-Resources Conceptualization Of Satisfaction And Emotional Exhaustion, Joey Oliveira Mar 2026

Human–Ai Interaction In Graduate Academic Work: A Job Demands-Resources Conceptualization Of Satisfaction And Emotional Exhaustion, Joey Oliveira

Human Resource Development Student Publications and Presentations

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies are increasingly embedded in graduate academic work, shaping how faculty and students perform cognitive, analytical, and knowledge-based tasks. As AI tools become integrated into writing, research, and instructional activities, human–AI interaction has emerged as a central feature of contemporary academic work environments. However, existing research has largely focused on AI adoption and technological capability, with limited attention given to how ongoing human–AI interaction influences well-being experiences in academic contexts. Drawing on the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) framework, this conceptual paper develops a model that links human–AI interaction to student learning satisfaction, faculty job satisfaction, and emotional exhaustion. …

Mud Sound Speed Profile Constraints From Sub-Bottom Arrival Times, Charles W. Holland

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Arrival times of sub-bottom reflected paths together with co-located direct measurements of the angle of intromission provide narrow constraints on the sediment sound speed profile. Measurements of these two quantities at the central New England Mud Patch in March 2017 indicate that the average sound speed gradient in the upper 3m and upper 9m of mud is 6 s1. Gradients of 5 s1 and 7 s1 over the upper 9m are too small and large, respectively. Below 9m, the sandmud transition interval has a gradient of 200 s1. VC

Intersecting Identities: The Leadership Journeys And Challenges Of Black Women Senior Leaders In Southern U.S. Predominantly White Institutions, Quizanae' Y. Cooper

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study looked at what Black women in high‑level leadership roles are experiencing at predominantly White institutions in Texas and Florida now that diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies have been rolled back. Using Black feminist theory and intersectionality as the foundation, the research focused on how race and gender shape their leadership, their decision‑making, and the ways they navigate their careers. Through in‑depth interviews with 10 Black women in executive positions, the study uses a narrative approach to understand their stories. Eight major themes emerged, and many participants explained that losing DEI initiatives created new obstacles, reduced support systems, …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Over six decades of research, two methods have been used to extract the natural radionuclides 210Pb and 210Po from seawater- the precipitation of iron hydroxide (Fe(OH)3) and coagulation of cobalt ammonium pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (Co-APDC). Although the two methods had been intercompared for 210Pb and shown to agree, they were never intercompared for 210Po until Roca-Martí et al. (2021) , in which only unfiltered samples were used. Here we document that Fe(OH)3 may be less effective in extracting 210Po from a seawater sample than Co-APDC. We hypothesize that cycling of 210Po through the marine food …

Graph Convolution Neural Network And Deep Q-Network Optimization-Based Intrusion Detection With Explainability Analysis, Kelvin Mwiga, Mussa Dida, Leandros Maglaras, Ahmad Mohsin, Helge Janicke, Iqbal H. Sarker

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

As networks expand in size and complexity, coupled with an exponential increase in intrusions on network and IoT systems, this leads to traditional models failing to capture increasingly intricate correlations among network components accurately. Graph Convolution Networks (GCNs) have recently acquired prominence for their capacity to represent nodes, edges, or entire graphs by aggregating information from adjacent nodes. However, the correlations between nodes and their neighbours, as well as related edges, differ. Assigning higher weights to nodes and edges with high similarity improves model accuracy and expressiveness. In this paper, we propose the GCN-DQN model, which integrates GCN with a …

Machine Learning-Based Upscaling Of Rock Permeability From Pore Scale To Core Scale: Effect Of Training Dataset Size And Sub-Core Volumes, Yaotian Guo, Fei Jiang, Takeshi Tsuji, Yoshitake Kato, Mai Shimokawara, Lionel Esteban, Mojtaba Seyyedi, Marina Pervukhina, Maxim Lebedev, Ryuta Kitamura

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Permeability characterizes the capacity of porous formations to conduct fluids, thereby governing the performance of carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS), hydrocarbon extraction, and subsurface energy storage. A reliable assessment of rock permeability is therefore essential for these applications. Direct estimation of permeability from low-resolution CT images of large rock samples offers a rapid approach to obtain permeability data. However, the limited resolution fails to capture detailed pore-scale structural features, resulting in low prediction accuracy. To address this limitation, we propose a convolutional neural network (CNN)-based upscaling method that integrates high-precision pore-scale permeability information into core-scale, low-resolution CT images. In …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Background/Objectives: Acute exercise remodels many interconnected biochemical pathways in metabolically active tissues. This remodeling involves the activation of the energy-sensing AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) to maintain cellular energy homeostasis. Critical energy reserves of glycogen, primarily stored in liver and skeletal muscle and known to interact with AMPK, are utilized to help meet increased energy demands with exercise. However, the breadth of metabolic pathways regulated by acute exercise and AMPK’s interactive roles with glycogen remain incompletely understood. This study therefore aimed to map mouse liver and skeletal muscle metabolite responses to continuous acute exercise and disruption of AMPK-glycogen interactions. Methods: Liquid …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Generative AI (GenAI) is increasingly integrated into users’ daily work as a collaborative partner. Drawing on the symbiotic agency theory, this study investigates the quality of human-GenAI collaboration using a mixed-methods approach, including qualitative interviews and quantitative surveys. Study 1 identified three dimensions of human-GenAI collaboration quality that comprise outcome quality, comfort, and efficiency; and six driving factors which can be categorized under human agency (domain knowledge, desire for control, and domestication ability), and GenAI agency (communication ability, working memory, and long-term memory). Study 2 applied fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) to explore configurations of the driving factors that lead …

Leveraging Generative Ai For Project Management: The Role Of Mindfulness And Job Crafting, Keyao Li, Fangfang Zhang, Laurie Hughes, Mark A. Griffin

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The integration of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) holds great potential to transform the project management profession, which can bring both substantial benefits and significant disruption. This study argues that effective GenAI adoption requires not only technical skills but also mindfulness to navigate its complexities and challenges. This study explores how mindfulness supports project managers in leveraging GenAI technologies to innovate work practices. We argue that project managers with higher mindfulness levels tend to be more open, attentive, and creative in crafting their immediate work environment. This, in turn, encourages project managers to explore how GenAI can optimise workflows, and ultimately …

Placental Clues To Congenital Heart Disease: A Modeling Approach, Ashley S. Howard, Selina M. Tucker, Kaela Varberg Mar 2026

Placental Clues To Congenital Heart Disease: A Modeling Approach, Ashley S. Howard, Selina M. Tucker, Kaela Varberg

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Congenital heart disease (CHD) remains the most common birth defect and a leading contributor to global infant morbidity and mortality. Early diagnosis improves outcomes, yet current screening methods frequently miss CHD during routine prenatal screening. The placenta, which develops in parallel with the fetal heart and shares critical molecular pathways, represents an underexplored diagnostic tissue. We highlight clinical, epidemiological, and mechanistic insights that link placental abnormalities to CHD and explore how imaging, in vitro models, and multiomics can improve our understanding of the placenta–heart axis. Leveraging these tools will offer opportunities for earlier CHD detection and illuminate avenues for intervention …

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) can help children survive severe cardiac and/or respiratory failure, but it is only provided in specialized centers. There are disparities in access by ground transport to ECMO services, but it is unknown to what extent interfacility transfer systems can expand access. Additionally, the number of children who live in proximity to centers that perform extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR) to be potential candidates in case of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is unknown. We conducted a geospatial analysis to answer these questions.

METHODS: We conducted a geospatial analysis of the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) …

Risperidone, an atypical antipsychotic, is increasingly prescribed in pediatric patients with psychiatric disorders. It is primarily metabolized by CYP2D6 to 9-hydroxyrisperidone, an active metabolite associated with a higher risk of adverse effects. The CYP2D6*17 and *29 alleles are prevalent in individuals of African ancestry and less studied than variants found in European ancestry individuals. This knowledge gap contributes to differences in health outcomes in individuals of non-European origin. The primary objective of this study is to replicate recently identified risperidone-specific activity for the CYP2D6*17 and *29 alleles. During psychiatric hospitalization, CYP2D6 was genotyped as part of routine care. Remnant plasma …
