Detecting Sensor Data Manipulation, Ricky Green, Michael Black

Shelby Hall Graduate Research Forum Posters

The integration of Information Technology (IT) and Operational Technology (OT) have made OT devices vulnerable to threats that have been successfully exploited with devastating results. Many modern techniques for hardening and securing enterprise IT systems are either incompatible with OT components in an Industrial Control System (ICS), reduce the efficiency of processes, or are prohibitively expensive to implement. Research in the area of ICS security focuses on a top-down approach, such as intrusion prevention by securing the perimeter of the network at layers 3 – 5 of the Purdue model by hardening IT systems. This approach is useful in Enterprise …

Calibration Of Time-Domain Impedance Probe (Tdip) To Investigate Space Plasma Dynamics During Periods Of Ionospheric Instability, Piyas Chowdhury, Soumyajit Dey, Edmund A. Spencer Mar 2026

Calibration Of Time-Domain Impedance Probe (Tdip) To Investigate Space Plasma Dynamics During Periods Of Ionospheric Instability, Piyas Chowdhury, Soumyajit Dey, Edmund A. Spencer

Shelby Hall Graduate Research Forum Posters

The traditional Plasma Impedance Probe (PIP) is popular for diagnosing parameters of the ionospheric plasma to study the space environment. However, the resolution of data measurements of existing PIP instruments, operating at higher frequencies, limits the analysis to studying the plasma features at electron scales. Studying plasma ion parameters is essential to understanding the ionospheric instability growth rates. This can only be accomplished by operating a diagnosing instrument at lower frequencies corresponding to ion scales. A recently developed Time Domain Impedance Probe (TDIP) is implementable for fast moving spacecraft using a time domain approach. The instrument has higher measurement resolution …

Brain Computer Interfaces: Enhancing Low-Cost Eeg Performance Through Deep, Anwar Rassoul Mar 2026

Brain Computer Interfaces: Enhancing Low-Cost Eeg Performance Through Deep, Anwar Rassoul

Shelby Hall Graduate Research Forum Posters

The field of Brain Computer Interfacing (BCI) has traditionally been confined to clinical and research environments due to the high cost and complexity of medical-grade EEG systems. However, the emergence of low-cost hardware exemplified has catalyzed a shift toward accessible, portable BCI applications. While these devices lower the barrier to entry for developers and researchers, they often suffer from a lower signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). This increased noise makes it difficult to extract the clean neural signatures required for high-accuracy control, particularly when operating in non-shielded, real-world environments.

This research focuses on Steady-State Visually Evoked Potentials (SSVEP), a robust BCI paradigm …

Temporal Eclectic Rule Extraction: Exploring Trustworthy Explainable Artificial Intelligence For Recurrent Neural Networks, Micah Israel Mar 2026

Temporal Eclectic Rule Extraction: Exploring Trustworthy Explainable Artificial Intelligence For Recurrent Neural Networks, Micah Israel

Shelby Hall Graduate Research Forum Posters

Enhancing temporal neural network interpretability can greatly increase the effectiveness of Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS). While explainable Deep Neural Networks (DNN) have been researched heavily in the literature for intrusion detection, explainable temporal neural networks lack the same attention. Current state-of-the-art XAI techniques rely on black-box surrogate explainers, which attempt to generate post-hoc explanations without valuable information inside the model's hidden neurons. To address this, this proposal introduces a novel white-box XAI method, Temporal Eclectic Rule Extraction (TERE), which is designed to provide explainable rules directly from temporal models. TERE aims to enhance decision transparency in IDS by offering interpretable …

Corporate Labor Violations: Do Ceos’ Public Charity Affiliations Matter?, Mariem Khalifa, Mehdi Khedmati, Mohammed Aminu Sualihu, Alfred Yawson

All Works

We examine the impact of CEOs’ public charity affiliations on corporate labor violations and find that public-charity-affiliated CEOs have a lower likelihood of engaging in labor violations than their non-affiliated peers. In a disaggregated analysis, we find the result to be driven primarily by wage and hour violations. This finding is validated when we compare changes in wage and hour violations around different types of CEO turnover. We further identify the promotion of a positive corporate culture and an increase in labor-related expenditures as the main channels through which CEOs’ public charity affiliations affect wage and hour violations. In addition, …

Biomolecular condensates have key roles in regulating cellular processes. Yet, the relationship between atomic features and condensate function remains poorly understood. We studied this relationship using the polar organizing protein Z (PopZ). Here, we revealed hierarchical assembly of PopZ into a filamentous condensate by integrating cryo-electron tomography, biochemistry, single-molecule techniques and molecular dynamics simulations. The PopZ helical domain drives filamentation and condensation, while the disordered region inhibits them. Phase-dependent conformational changes prevent interfilament contacts in the dilute phase and expose client-binding sites in the dense phase. Perturbing filament formation in vitro alters the dynamics of scaffold and client proteins and …

Objective: De novo mutations in the syntaxin-binding protein 1 (STXBP1), encoded by STXBP1, are among the most prevalent causes of variable neurodevelopmental disorders, including epileptic encephalopathy, developmental delay, and movement disorders. Although STXBP1 has been proposed as a critical presynaptic protein controlling synaptic vesicle exocytosis, clinical phenotypes also suggest that its biological function could be more diverse.

Methods: The expression pattern of STXBP1 was studied using immunostaining in vitro and in vivo. Synaptosome isolation was performed to investigate the synaptic and non-synaptic localization of STXBP1 in the brain. STXBP1 immunoprecipitation followed by mass spectrometry (MS) was conducted to identify protein …

Creating A News Literate Journalism: A Metacognitive Model For Journalism Practice, Patrick R. Johnson

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

This article introduces News Literate Journalism, a metacognitive approach that redefines news literacy as a professional competency. Drawing on interviews with 30 journalists and grounded in news literacy and educational psychology, I argue that ethical, adaptive journalism relies on reflection, regulation and critical reasoning. These behaviors, though embedded in journalistic routines, are often overlooked. The approach presents a new framework for journalism education and practice, one that promotes transparency, fosters trust and supports democratic resilience.
