The Cgas-Sting Pathway Affects Vertebral Bone But Does Not Promote Intervertebral Disc Cell Senescence Or Degeneration, Olivia K. Ottone, C. James Kim, John A. Collins, Makarand V. Risbud Jun 2022

The Cgas-Sting Pathway Affects Vertebral Bone But Does Not Promote Intervertebral Disc Cell Senescence Or Degeneration, Olivia K. Ottone, C. James Kim, John A. Collins, Makarand V. Risbud

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers

The DNA-sensing cGAS-STING pathway promotes the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) and mediates type-I interferon inflammatory responses to foreign viral and bacterial DNA as well as self-DNA. Studies of the intervertebral disc in humans and mice demonstrate associations between aging, increased cell senescence, and disc degeneration. Herein we assessed the role of STING in SASP promotion in STING gain- (N153S) and loss-of-function mouse models. N153S mice evidenced elevated circulating levels of proinflammatory markers including IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α, showed elevated monocyte and macrophage abundance in the vertebral marrow, and exhibited a mild trabecular and cortical bone phenotype in caudal vertebrae. Interestingly, …

The Development And Validation Of The Practicing Faith Survey, Albert Cheng, Beth Green, David I. Smith

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

We introduce a new instrument, called the Practicing Faith Survey (PFS), to assess faith formation among students in K-12 Christian schools. We begin by describing the conceptual and theological background of the PFS, underscoring the ways it differs from existing instruments of faith formation because of its particular focus on Christian practice within the context of learning and the vocation of the student. We then describe the procedures behind developing the PFS and its five domains: Intellectual, Relational, Introspective, Beneficent, and Formational Practices. We then provide evidence of validity and reliability based on a pilot study that involved 1,200 US …

Warmstarting The Constrained Optimal Filter Design Problem For Active Noise Control Systems In Conic Formulation, Yongjie Zhuang, Zhuang Mo, Yangfan Liu Jun 2022

Warmstarting The Constrained Optimal Filter Design Problem For Active Noise Control Systems In Conic Formulation, Yongjie Zhuang, Zhuang Mo, Yangfan Liu

Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories

In practical active noise control (ANC) systems, constraints such as stability, need to be considered in the controller design process. The optimal control filters can be obtained by solving a constrained optimization problem, which requires a significant computational effort. Recently, a convex formulation in conic form was proposed for ANC applications which was shown to result in a computational time reduction by several orders. It is desirable to further improve its efficiency so that the optimal filter design process can be continuously repeated to achieve adaptive control for slow varying operating conditions. One potential way is to introduce a warmstart …

Do Book Consumers Discriminate Against Black, Female, Or Young Authors?, Dana B. Weinberg, Adam Kapelner

Publications and Research

The publishing industry shows marked evidence of both gender and racial discrimination. A rational explanation for this difference in treatment of both female and Black authors might relate to the taste-based preferences of book consumers, who might be less willing to pay for books by such authors. We ran a randomized experiment to test for the presence of discriminatory preferences by consumers based on authors’ race, gender and/or age. We collected ratings of 25,201 book surveys across 9,072 subjects on Amazon’s Mechanical Turk, making this study the largest experimental study of the book market to date. Subjects were presented with …

Adolescent Sex Trafficking Screening Tool In An Emergency Department, Elizabeth Elliott, Tracy Ison Jun 2022

Adolescent Sex Trafficking Screening Tool In An Emergency Department, Elizabeth Elliott, Tracy Ison

Group: Samford University Moffett & Sanders School of Nursing

Sexual trafficking (ST) is prevalent in the United States and Alabama (Polaris, 2019). According to U.S. law, any person under the age of 18 who is induced to perform a commercial sex act is a victim of ST regardless of whether there is force, fraud, or coercion. Once free from trafficking, up to 88% of victims report that they had been in contact with a healthcare provider while being trafficked. Of those, few reported being questioned regarding their ensnarement by traffickers, and more than half were treated in emergency care settings (Polaris, 2019). Most victims report ST began between the …

Zooming Into Breakout Rooms For Engaging Library Instruction Sessions, Sarah J. Hammill Jun 2022

Zooming Into Breakout Rooms For Engaging Library Instruction Sessions, Sarah J. Hammill

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

i. With Covid-19 came the onset of social distancing, closed campuses, and limited open hours in physical libraries. Instruction librarians shifted to online instruction and had to modify the traditional way of teaching. In face-to-face settings it is easy to read the room. For example, a blank stare usually indicates that the student has “left the room” mentally. This is when an instruction librarian reengages the room by asking a question, changing their intonation, walking around the room, or calling on someone in order to bring back the stargazers. We quickly learned that most of our tried-and-true teaching tips do …

Zoomed Out? How Burnout Was Associated With Affect, Personality, And Job Satisfaction Among Library Employees During The Pandemic, Barbara M. Sorondo, Christopher M. Jimenez, Sarah J. Hammill

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

In March 2020, many libraries transitioned from onsite to remote work in an “abundance of caution” due to the coronavirus pandemic. Almost overnight, the varied interactions previously occurring across classrooms, conference rooms, offices, staff lounges, and cafes transformed into endless Zoom sessions. Many library employees consequently noted feeling greater stress, fatigue, and burnout, the latter of which is characterized by emotional exhaustion, cynicism, alienation from work activities, and reduced job performance. We measured how burnout related to affect, personality, job satisfaction, and various characteristics among library employees during this transition to remote work.

We distributed a survey to all library …

Twenty-nine articles also conducted function-based interventions designed from the results of the IISCAs. Within those 39 studies, 235 participants participated in 293 synthesized contingency analyses (SCA) and 111 treatment evaluations. Results indicated that 95.56% of SCAs in the included studies were reported to be differentiated. Likewise, Tau-U …

Autofluorescence Microscopy: Identifying Bacterial Signals On Rock Samples, Noel Case Jun 2022

Autofluorescence Microscopy: Identifying Bacterial Signals On Rock Samples, Noel Case

University Honors Theses

One common method for identifying microbes present in fluid and non-fluid samples is fluorescent dye staining, in which samples are stained with a fluorophore - a molecule excited by an external light source that re-emits energy as higher-wavelength light. The excitation wavelength used greatly impacts the observability of microbes in the resulting fluorescence images, and deep ultraviolet excitation (200-280 nm) seems to provide the highest signal-to-noise ratio of any excitation range. By inoculating rock samples (gypsum and marble) with B. subtilis, staining with SYTO 9, Acridine Orange and FM 1-43 dyes, and imaging with deep UV (275 nm), near …

Sand Microtextures As Indicators Of Depositional Environment – A Comparison Of Fluvial, Marine And Aeolian Sediments, Brian Hanson, Diane M. Burns

The Compass: Earth Science Journal of Sigma Gamma Epsilon

The Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) has been used to examine sediment surfaces since the late 1960’s. More recently, results of SEM analyses of grains have been used to link depositional environments and modes of transport for sediments and sandstones (Krinsely and Trusty, 1986; Mahaney and Kalm 2000; Mahaney et al., 2001). This technique has been considered to be a viable, though time consuming, option for researchers interpreting depositional environments. V-pits are a microfeature which is claimed to indicate a littoral deposition environment (Krinsley and Trusty, 1986; Middleton and Kassera, 1987), while others claim it is a result of fluvial processes …
