Resilience And Health Of Older Women Who Have Experience Intimate Partner Violence Earlier In Life, Tenna R. Schumacher Jun 2022

Resilience And Health Of Older Women Who Have Experience Intimate Partner Violence Earlier In Life, Tenna R. Schumacher

Dissertations

When a traumatic event such as intimate partner violence occurs, resilience can help define recovery from that event. Women who experience the adverse event of intimate partner violence suffer injury, loss of physical and mental health, and possible death. Specifically, numerous women suffer injury and adverse health as a result of experiencing intimate partner violence (Krug, Mercy, Dahlberg, & Zwi, 2002). The internal quality of resilience is what allows a person to mend or heal from trauma (Wagnild, 2009). Resilience is demonstrated by hardiness of spirit and a person's ability to return to their lifestyle (Atkinson, Martin, & Rankin, 2009; …

Sustainable Building Without Certification: An Exploration Of Implications And Trends, Yewande Abraham, Lisa Greenwood, Jennifer Schneider Jun 2022

Sustainable Building Without Certification: An Exploration Of Implications And Trends, Yewande Abraham, Lisa Greenwood, Jennifer Schneider

Articles

Background: Sustainable buildings play a pivotal role in meeting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). However, the criteria and process for certification associated with sustainable building rating systems have been seen by many as either cumbersome or too expensive. As a result, some buildings are constructed following sustainable building guidelines without necessarily pursuing external certification. This paper takes a critical look at sustainable building without certification in the US and addresses 3 questions: (1) What is the rationale behind not pursuing certification? (2) When certification is not part of the objective, how are particular sustainability criteria selected? (3) …

Quantitative Proteomic Analyses Of Human Plasma: Application Of Mass Spectrometry For The Discovery Of Clinical Delirium Biomarkers, Kwame Wiredu Jun 2022

Quantitative Proteomic Analyses Of Human Plasma: Application Of Mass Spectrometry For The Discovery Of Clinical Delirium Biomarkers, Kwame Wiredu

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

The biomarker discovery pipeline is a multi-step endeavor to identify potential diagnostic or prognostic markers of a disease. Although the advent of modern mass spectrometers has revolutionized the initial discovery phase, a significant bottleneck still exists when validating discovered biomarkers. In this doctoral research, I demonstrate that the discovery, verification and validation of biomarkers can all be performed using mass spectrometry and apply the biomarker pipeline to the context of clinical delirium.

First, a systematic review of recent literature provided a birds-eye view of untargeted, discovery proteomic attempts for biomarkers of delirium in the geriatric population. Here, a comprehensive search …

Empire And Politics In Eastern And Western Civilizations, Mortimer N.S. Sellers Jun 2022

Empire And Politics In Eastern And Western Civilizations, Mortimer N.S. Sellers

All Faculty Scholarship

To speak of “empire” today is to evoke the history of China and of Rome, two great empires that vastly influenced the culture and development of half the globe. The whole world has been touched by their powerful examples, so that even someone writing, as I do, in a distant corner of North America, feels the history and influence of the Roman and Chinese empires every day. Nor are they unique. Something like “empire” has arisen wherever there was wealth and stability to support it. Rome and China had numerous rivals in the East and West who aspired to empire …

Evaluating Countable Texture Elements To Represent Bathymetric Uncertainty, Colin Ware, Christos Kastrisios Jun 2022

Evaluating Countable Texture Elements To Represent Bathymetric Uncertainty, Colin Ware, Christos Kastrisios

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Measurements of the depth of the seabed vary widely in both horizontal and vertical accuracy. To convey this information to mariners, Zones of Confidence (ZOC) are defined for charts. A mosaic of ZOCs can be represented as a chart overlay. This study evaluates two novel designs for textures to represent ZOCs. Both use textures with countable elements to represent different ZOC levels. One uses a texture made of lines where the number of lines in a texture cell represents the confidence level; the other uses dot clusters where the number of dots similarly represents the ZOC level. In the study, …

BACKGROUND: An excessive rise in maternal lipids during pregnancy may have detrimental impacts on maternal and fetal health leading to adverse pregnancy outcomes. However, knowledge gaps exist with respect to the association between lipid biomarkers and birth outcomes.

METHODS: We conducted a secondary data analysis of healthy pregnant women (N = 25) with mid-pregnancy fasting serum samples collected at 22-28 weeks of gestation and birth outcome data. Serum was analyzed for conventional lipid profile (total-C, HDL-C, LDL-C, and triglycerides) and lipoprotein subclass distribution, including particle number (nM) and size (nm), for very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL)/chylomicron (CM), low density lipoprotein (LDL), …

Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cell therapy is routinely used to treat patients with refractory hematologic malignancies. However, a significant proportion of patients experience suboptimal CAR T cell cytotoxicity and persistence that can permit tumor cell escape and disease relapse. Here we show that a prototype pro-lymphoid growth factor is able to enhance CAR T cell efficacy. We demonstrate that a long-acting form of recombinant human interleukin-7 (IL-7) fused with hybrid Fc (rhIL-7-hyFc) promotes proliferation, persistence and cytotoxicity of human CAR T cells in xenogeneic mouse models, and murine CAR T cells in syngeneic mouse models, resulting in long-term tumor-free …

Use Of Early Specialty Hesi Exams As Predictors Of Hesi Exit Examination Performance In Baccalaureate Degree Nursing Program, Cathy E. Hansen

Dissertations

This study explored standardized testing outcomes used early in a baccalaureate nursing (BSN) education program in traditional and second-degree students in order to identify predictors of outcome on the program exit examination (HESI E2). Defining early predictors of student outcomes may more accurately identify student need for early intervention, offer timely remediation, optimize success, and minimize attrition in nursing education programs. The purpose of this correlational quantitative study was to determine if a relationship exists between student outcomes on four HESI specialty exams (fundamentals, health assessment, pathophysiology, and pharmacology) and the performance outcomes on the HESI E2 …

Synthesis And Applications Of Α,Β-Dehydroamino Acid-Containing Peptides, Diego A. Moya Jun 2022

Synthesis And Applications Of Α,Β-Dehydroamino Acid-Containing Peptides, Diego A. Moya

Theses and Dissertations

Yaku’amide A (YA) is a linear anticancer peptide that is rich in bulky dehydroamino acids (ΔAAs) and β-hydroxyamino acids (β-OHAAs). In our recent total synthesis of YA, we featured a one-pot anti dehydration–azide reduction–O→N acyl transfer process for the stereospecific construction of Z- and E- ∆Ile residues. Despite previous total syntheses and our efforts, the synthesis of YA remains lengthy. Via computational studies, we identified two analogue peptides that closely resemble the conformation of YA. The use of simpler and symmetrical bulky ΔAAs such as dehydrovaline (ΔVal) and dehydroethylnorvaline (ΔEnv) as surrogates of ∆Ile, along with azlactone chemistry for their …

BACKGROUND: Since March 2020, COVID-19 has disproportionately impacted communities of color within the United States. As schools have shifted from virtual to in-person learning, continual guidance is necessary to understand appropriate interventions to prevent SARS-CoV-2 transmission. Weekly testing of students and staff for SARS-CoV-2 within K-12 school setting could provide an additional barrier to school-based transmission, especially within schools unable to implement additional mitigation strategies and/or are in areas of high transmission. This study seeks to understand the role that weekly SARS-CoV-2 testing could play in K-12 schools. In addition, through qualitative interviews and listening sessions, this research hopes to …

BACKGROUND: In Nigeria, approximately 150,000 children with sickle cell anemia (SCA) are born annually, accounting for more than half of all SCA births worldwide. Without intervention, about 11% of children with SCA will develop a stroke before their 20th birthday. Evidence-based practices for primary stroke prevention include screening for abnormal transcranial Doppler (TCD) measurements coupled with regular blood transfusion therapy for at least one year, followed by hydroxyurea (HU) therapy indefinitely. In high-resource countries, this strategy contributes to a 92% decrease in stroke incidence rates. In 2016, as part of a capacity building objective of the Stroke Prevention Trial in …

The current study evaluated the effects of the Mystery Student Intervention (MSI) in university and community-based preschool settings on the appropriate and disruptive behaviors in the classroom utilizing a randomized independent group contingency. This study extended the literature base of the MSI, which was previously conducted in Head Start classrooms by Pasqua (2019), and Pasqua and colleagues (2021) which determined the MSI to be effective at reducing disruptive behaviors in the classroom setting. A nonconcurrent multiple baseline design across three classrooms was used. This study also sought to further extend the literature by evaluating programmed maintenance using a partial sequential …

Quantitative Relationships Between River And Channel-Belt Planform Patterns, Tian Y. Dong, Timothy A. Goudge Jun 2022

Quantitative Relationships Between River And Channel-Belt Planform Patterns, Tian Y. Dong, Timothy A. Goudge

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Channel planform patterns arise from internal dynamics of sediment transport and fluid flow in rivers and are affected by external controls such as valley confinement. Understanding whether these channel patterns are preserved in the rock record has critical implications for our ability to constrain past environmental conditions. Rivers are preserved as channel belts, which are one of the most ubiquitous and accessible parts of the sedimentary record, yet the relationship between river and channel-belt planform patterns remains unquantified. We analyzed planform patterns of rivers and channel belts from 30 systems globally. Channel patterns were classified using a graph theory-based metric, …

Reduced glomerular filtration rate (GFR) can progress to kidney failure. Risk factors include genetics and diabetes mellitus (DM), but little is known about their interaction. We conducted genome-wide association meta-analyses for estimated GFR based on serum creatinine (eGFR), separately for individuals with or without DM (nDM = 178,691, nnoDM = 1,296,113). Our genome-wide searches identified (i) seven eGFR loci with significant DM/noDM-difference, (ii) four additional novel loci with suggestive difference and (iii) 28 further novel loci (including CUBN) by allowing for potential difference. GWAS on eGFR among DM individuals identified 2 known and 27 potentially responsible loci for diabetic …

Exertional heat illness (EHI) and malignant hyperthermia (MH) are life threatening conditions associated with muscle breakdown in the setting of triggering factors including volatile anesthetics, exercise, and high environmental temperature. To identify new genetic variants that predispose to EHI and/or MH, we performed genomic sequencing on a cohort with EHI/MH and/or abnormal caffeine-halothane contracture test. In five individuals, we identified rare, pathogenic heterozygous variants in ASPH, a gene encoding junctin, a regulator of excitation-contraction coupling. We validated the pathogenicity of these variants using orthogonal pre-clinical models, CRISPR-edited C2C12 myotubes and transgenic zebrafish. In total, we demonstrate that ASPH variants represent …

METHODS: As part of an ongoing clinical trial, a sample of 29 elementary school children (mean age: 7.4 ± .97 years) completed 7 days of wrist actigraphy before a lab visit to assess DLMO. Hourly salivary melatonin samples were collected under dim light conditions (<5 >lx). Data from actigraphy were used to generate predictions of circadian …

Do Auditors Respond To Changes In Clients’ Analyst Coverage? Evidence From A Natural Experiment, Mohammad Alkhamees Jun 2022

Do Auditors Respond To Changes In Clients’ Analyst Coverage? Evidence From A Natural Experiment, Mohammad Alkhamees

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Prior research has established that analysts serve as an important monitor of managementand improve the quality of firms’ financial reporting. In this study, I utilize the natural experiment resulting from the mergers and closures of brokerage houses, to examine whether this exogenous change in firms’ information environment impacts the audit process. Specifically, I examine whether reductions in analyst coverage have an effect on auditor effort proxied by audit fees and audit report lag, as well as financial reporting quality, measured by future restatements. I find that client firms pay significantly higher audit fees following an exogenous reduction in analyst coverage …

Climate And Intraspecific Geographic Variation Of Nests And Eggs In The Eastern Kingbird Tyrannus Tyrannus, Samantha Marie Gillette Jun 2022

Climate And Intraspecific Geographic Variation Of Nests And Eggs In The Eastern Kingbird Tyrannus Tyrannus, Samantha Marie Gillette

Dissertations and Theses

The reproductive success of birds is ultimately driven by the traits of nests, eggs, and incubation behavior and the interactions among them. Avian reproduction varies on large geographic scales, most prominently between tropic- vs. temperate-breeding species, but also on finer scales, such as along latitudinal and elevational geographic gradients. However, despite the importance of eggs and nests, how their traits vary geographically in response to differences in regional climate remains understudied.

We studied Eastern Kingbirds (Tyrannus tyrannus), which have been previously demonstrated to alter incubation length in response to local climate conditions. Our study sites, Kansas (KS), New …

The Daughters Of The Fronde: French Aristocratic Women And The Subversion Of Bourbon Absolutist Culture, 1661-1727, Jordan David Hallmark

Dissertations and Theses

The turbulent events of the Fronde des Princes (Fronde of the Princes), which saw the French nobility stage a failed rebellion against the monarchical administration of France's chief minister, Cardinal Mazarin, between 1650 and 1652, have been portrayed in the existing historiography as the swan song of a pre-absolutist nobility seeking to preserve its feudal identity as the king's partner in governance and military affairs. Indeed, as many historians of early modern France have observed, the policies pursued by Cardinal Mazarin following the monarchy's victory over the rebel princes of the Fronde, and subsequently expanded upon by Louis XIV after …
