"A Poem Is A Gesture Toward Home": Formal Plurality And Black/Queer Critical Hope In Jericho Brown's The Tradition, Kaitlin Hoelzer Jun 2022

"A Poem Is A Gesture Toward Home": Formal Plurality And Black/Queer Critical Hope In Jericho Brown's The Tradition, Kaitlin Hoelzer

Theses and Dissertations

Jericho Brown's The Tradition (2019), which won the Pulitzer Prize for poetry, includes four duplexes, a poetic form of Brown's own invention that combines the sonnet and the blues. Made of fourteen lines separated into seven couplets, the duplex is a complex structure comprised of sets of indents and repeated lines. Brown's use of disparate source forms to create a new form altogether challenges the supremacy of a singular, white American literary tradition, putting it into conversation with other traditions in order to critique its historically racist and heterosexist boundaries. As he does so, Brown works not to abolish "the …

Women's Response To Spousal Pornography Use: A Grounded Theory, Misha Duncan Crawford Jun 2022

Women's Response To Spousal Pornography Use: A Grounded Theory, Misha Duncan Crawford

Theses and Dissertations

Empirical research suggests that married women may more commonly experience spousal pornography use as a relational attachment threat and are more likely to experience negatively associated relational outcomes such as distress and loss of trust. The purpose of this study was to develop a grounded theory of women’s response to concealed spousal pornography use. This study included the experiences of 30 women who reported spousal pornography use as a threat to relational attachment and demonstrated evidence of individual and relational healing thereafter. The research question, “How do women describe the experience of learning of their spouse’s pornography use and the …

Hypertrophic Olivary Degeneration And Palatal Myoclonus From A Streptococcus Intermedius Infection Of The Brain: Illustrative Case, Annie Tonnu, Rachel J. Hunt, Thomas M. Zervos, Travis Hamilton, Christina Tyrrell, Adam M. Robin Jun 2022

Hypertrophic Olivary Degeneration And Palatal Myoclonus From A Streptococcus Intermedius Infection Of The Brain: Illustrative Case, Annie Tonnu, Rachel J. Hunt, Thomas M. Zervos, Travis Hamilton, Christina Tyrrell, Adam M. Robin

Neurosurgery Articles

BACKGROUND: Hypertrophic olivary degeneration (HOD) is a rare condition that can occur after disruption of the Guillain-Mollaret triangle. Clinically, HOD can present with palatal myoclonus with or without oculopalatal tremor, which sometimes results in symptomatic dysphagia and/or speech abnormalities. This condition is commonly associated with vascular lesions, with only three prior reported cases of HOD resulting from intracranial abscess.

OBSERVATIONS: An otherwise healthy patient developed multiple intracranial abscesses. Biopsy showed gram-positive cocci; however, culture findings were negative. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) identified Streptococcus intermedius. The patient demonstrated palatal myoclonus and vertical nystagmus, which resulted in persistent mild dysphagia and altered …

Il-10 And Tgf-Β Increase Connexin-43 Expression And Membrane Potential Of Hl-1 Cardiomyocytes Coupled With Raw 264.7 Macrophages, Cora B. Cox, Mike Castro, Thomas L. Brown, Nancy J. Bigley

Neuroscience, Cell Biology & Physiology Faculty Publications

Cardiac resident macrophages facilitate electrical conduction by interacting with cardiomyocytes via connexin-43 (Cx43) hemichannels. Cx43 is critical for impulse propagation and coordination between muscle contractions. Cardiomyocyte electrophysiology can be altered when coupled with noncardiomyocyte cell types such as M2c tissue-resident macrophages. Using cocultures of murine HL-1 cardiomyocytes and RAW 264.7 macrophages, we examined the hypothesis that cytokine signals, TGF-β1 and IL-10, upregulate Cx43 expression at points of contact between the two cell types. These cytokine signals maintain the macrophages in an M2c anti-inflammatory phenotype, mimicking cardiac resident macrophages. The electrophysiology of cardiomyocytes was examined using di-8-ANEPPS potentiometric dye, which reflects …

Expected Sensitivity To 128Te Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay With The Cuore Teo2 Cryogenic Bolometers, V. Dompé, D. Q. Adams, C. Alduino, K. Alfonso, Frank Avignone Iii

Faculty Publications

The CUORE experiment is a ton-scale array of TeO2 cryogenic bolometers located at the underground Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso of Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN), in Italy. The CUORE detector consists of 988 crystals operated as source and detector at a base temperature of ∼ 10 mK. Such cryogenic temperature is reached and maintained by means of a custom built cryogen-free dilution cryostat, designed with the aim of minimizing the vibrational noise and the environmental radioactivity. The primary goal of CUORE is the search for neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te, but thanks to its …

Devotee/Ethnographer: My Struggle At The Boundary Walls Of Participant Observation, Atreyee Majumder Jun 2022

Devotee/Ethnographer: My Struggle At The Boundary Walls Of Participant Observation, Atreyee Majumder

Articles

This article demonstrates the difficulty of incorporating within the methodological ambit of ‘participant observation’, a possibility of the ethnographer herself staking claim in the religious truth claims of the community that constitute the subject of research. In so doing, this article provides a critique of the concept of participant observation to point out that participant observation anticipates the work of the ethnographer in participating in the physical, performative lives of the community that she purports to study, but never the internal life, especially the life of accessing a register of truth. I found myself in a curious situation as a …

Healthcare Profession Students Of Color Participating In International Service-Learning, Ellyn Katherine Couillard

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative exploratory case study investigated the healthcare profession students’ of color experience and the perceived impact of completing international service-learning (ISL). Before this study, most of the research about healthcare profession students in ISL reported had mainly White participants or reported data and findings in the aggregate. To complete this research, I performed two semi-structured interviews with each of the five participants incorporating photo-elicitation techniques. Then I performed constant comparative methods and communicated with a peer debriefer about my findings. Five participants were selected using max maximum variation based on racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds, programs of study, and …

Sleeping To Support: An Examination Of The Relationship Between Leader Sleep And Positive Support Behaviors, Jordyn Jan Leslie Jun 2022

Sleeping To Support: An Examination Of The Relationship Between Leader Sleep And Positive Support Behaviors, Jordyn Jan Leslie

Dissertations and Theses

Although research has documented the relationship between sleep and workplace outcomes among general employees, less research has focused on the role of sleep among workplace leaders. Drawing from the work, nonwork, and sleep theoretical model (Crain et al., 2018), the current study investigates emotional exhaustion the link between leader sleep quantity on a constellation of positive leader support behaviors (i.e., general supervisor support, family supportive supervisor behaviors (FSSB), and sleep leadership) rated by both the leader and their direct employee. To gain a deeper understanding of the role of sleep in these relationships, this study examines the interaction between sleep …

Of The Community, For The Community: Ud Arena More Than Just A Place For Basketball During Pandemic, University Of Dayton

News Releases

University of Dayton Arena was scheduled to be ready for March Madness on March 15, 2020. But COVID-19 changed that. By that evening, a flurry of text messages to UD Arena Executive Director Scott DeBolt set into motion a transformation of UD Arena unlike any in its history. By March 17, 2020, the day the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament should have tipped in Dayton, the arena became southwest Ohio's first mass public COVID-19 testing site.
