Tightly regulated and cell-specific NADPH-oxidases (Nox) represent one of the major sources of reactive oxygen species (ROS) signaling molecules that are involved in tissue development and stem cell self-renewal. We have characterized the role of Nox4 in osteo-progenitors during postnatal bone development. Nox4 expression in bone and ROS generation were increased during early osteoblast differentiation and bone development. Stromal osteoblastic cell self-renewal, proliferation and ROS production were significantly lower in samples from whole-body Nox4 knockout mice (Nox4-/-) and conditional knockout (CKO) mice with depletion of Nox4 in the limb bud mesenchyme compared with those from control mice (Nox4fl/fl), but they …

A Decade Of Gigascience: A Perspective On Conservation Genetics, Stephen James O'Brien
A Decade Of Gigascience: A Perspective On Conservation Genetics, Stephen James O'Brien
Biology Faculty Articles
Wide interest in species conservation is young. To many it began early in 1903 when Teddy Roosevelt and John Muir set up a camp under the Grizzly Giant in the Mariposa Grove of California's Yosemite Valley. Over three days they decided to broaden the US National Park footprint across the USA. Conservationists were inspired in the coming decades by the writings of wildlife conservation pioneers—Osa Johnson (I Married Adventure), Karen Blixen (Out of Africa) and Rachel Carson (The Silent Spring). Countless crusaders developed a passion for preserving dwindling species in those early days, yet …
Epigenetic Mechanisms Influencing Therapeutic Response In Breast Cancer., Amaia Arruabarrena-Aristorena, Eneda Toska
Epigenetic Mechanisms Influencing Therapeutic Response In Breast Cancer., Amaia Arruabarrena-Aristorena, Eneda Toska
Kimmel Cancer Center Faculty Papers
The majority of breast cancers are estrogen receptor (ER)+ and agents targeting the ER signaling pathway have markedly increased survival for women with breast cancer for decades. However, therapeutic resistance eventually emerges, especially in the metastatic setting. In the past decade disrupted epigenetic regulatory processes have emerged as major contributors to carcinogenesis in many cancer types. Aberrations in chromatin modifiers and transcription factors have also been recognized as mediators of breast cancer development and therapeutic outcome, and new epigenetic-based therapies in combination with targeted therapies have been proposed. Here we will discuss recent progress in our understanding of the chromatin-based …
Being "Rightly Known": Otherness And The Ethics Of Reading In Charlotte Brontë'S Villette, Tin Yan Grace Lee
Being "Rightly Known": Otherness And The Ethics Of Reading In Charlotte Brontë'S Villette, Tin Yan Grace Lee
Theses and Dissertations
Villette (1853), Charlotte Brontë's last novel, is famously riddled with ambiguity: its narrator-protagonist, Lucy Snowe, avoids disclosing details about her childhood, fails to reveal to readers the identity of characters she recognizes from her past, and, at the end of the novel, refuses to confirm if her love interest, M. Paul, has died at sea after a storm. Believing Lucy's ambiguous narrative style to be a tool she uses to train readers to better understand her, many critics have focused their efforts on trying to interpret Lucy's silences and evasions "correctly," thereby turning themselves into Lucy's or Brontë's "ideal" authorial …
Tree Ring Isotopic Reconstruction Of Hurricane Dolores, Jonathan Kane
Tree Ring Isotopic Reconstruction Of Hurricane Dolores, Jonathan Kane
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
Tree rings contain high-resolution climate proxies of temperature and precipitation (Hughes et al., 1982; Fritts 2012; Scuderi 1993). The objective of this study was to use tree ring cellulose, specifically measuring δ18O - the oxygen-18 to oxygen-16 stable isotope ratio- to investigate the impact of Hurricane Dolores, a tropical cyclone that produced heavy precipitation in the Sierra Nevada in July 2015. Prior studies (Berkelhammer and Stott, 2008, 2009) have shown that conifer forests in California record the influence of varying precipitation regimes in their ring alpha-cellulose. Hurricane Dolores produced an intense precipitation event that inundated parts of the Mojave Desert …
Speech Pause In People With Aphasia Across Word Length, Frequency, And Syntactic Category, Lana Mitchell
Speech Pause In People With Aphasia Across Word Length, Frequency, And Syntactic Category, Lana Mitchell
Theses and Dissertations
This study is an examination of how a word’s syntactic category, word length, and usage frequency might impact a speaker’s use of communicative pause. Previously collected between and within utterance language samples from 21 people with aphasia (Harmon, 2018) were evaluated in this study. Participants consisted of 11 individuals diagnosed with mild or very mild aphasia and 10 individuals with moderate aphasia;15 who exhibited fluent subtypes and 6 non-fluent subtypes of aphasia. Data from the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) was used to code the word frequency and syntactic category of each word in the language samples. Generally, speakers …
An Exploratory Study Of Behavioral Engagement In People With And Without Aphasia: Comparisons And Relationships, Vivian Elisabeth Ward
An Exploratory Study Of Behavioral Engagement In People With And Without Aphasia: Comparisons And Relationships, Vivian Elisabeth Ward
Theses and Dissertations
Previous research suggests that attentional deficits could be the underlying cause of language impairments in people with aphasia (PWA) and that behavioral engagement ratings can be an accurate way to measure attention to specific tasks. Previous research also suggests that PWA have lower levels of behavioral engagement than neurologically healthy adults. Participants in the present study included 9 PWA and 18 neurologically healthy adults. This was an exploratory study investigating the relationships and differences between behavioral engagement and physiological measures, perceived arousal, and naming accuracy and response time in PWA and neurologically healthy adults. Participants completed a confrontational naming task …
The Effects Of Stimulus Type On Interpersonal And Intrapersonal Speech Perception In Typical Adults, Melannee Wursten Ipsen
The Effects Of Stimulus Type On Interpersonal And Intrapersonal Speech Perception In Typical Adults, Melannee Wursten Ipsen
Theses and Dissertations
Children with speech sound disorders (SSD) often have difficulties with speech perception. Speech perception is the ability to intake speech sounds and interpret them for meaning. Understanding children’s speech perception abilities is pertinent because children use perceptual skills to hone accurate production during SSD treatment. Different types of stimuli have been used in speech perception research. At present, it is unclear how different types of speech stimuli differentially impact speech perception in typical listeners or children with SSD. In this study, we investigated perceptual skills for different speech types in neurotypical adults to better understand how stimulus type impacts perception …
Diagnostic Accuracy Of Nonword Repetition Tasks For The Clinical Assessment Of Spanish-English Dual Language Learners: A Preliminary Investigation, Audrey Czirr
Theses and Dissertations
Nonword repetition (NWR) has demonstrated significant potential as a less-biased language assessment measure for dual language learners (DLLs). However, there are currently no available guidelines for the use of NWR in a clinical setting. The purpose of this preliminary study is to develop initial recommendations for the clinical use of NWR tasks by determining the diagnostic accuracy and optimal cut-off scores for two NWR tasks and scoring methods, and to evaluate the clinical feasibility of NWR as an assessment measure. Participants included 23 DLL students with and without language disorder between the ages of 6 and 8. Spanish and English …
The Behavioral And Neurophysiologic Relationships Between Sensory Processing And Autistic Traits In Emerging Adults, Savanah Calton
The Behavioral And Neurophysiologic Relationships Between Sensory Processing And Autistic Traits In Emerging Adults, Savanah Calton
Theses and Dissertations
The majority of individuals diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) experience sensory processing difficulties that are also associated with greater presence of autistic traits, psychiatric difficulty, and intolerance of uncertainty (IU). These relationships are also expressed in the neurotypical (NT) population, termed the Broader Autism Phenotype (BAP), and present with impacts to daily functioning/well-being just as prominently. However, little is known concerning the neurophysiologic nature of these behavioral relationships, especially in young adults. Thus, the purpose of the current study was to examine the behavioral and neurophysiologic nature of the relationships between sensory processing, autistic traits, and related behavioral functions …
Motivation Across Platforms, Mariia Shishmareva
Motivation Across Platforms, Mariia Shishmareva
Theses and Dissertations
Motivation in language learning has been studied for quite a long time. However, the main focus has been on motivation in face-to-face learning environments. Motivation in online learning can be different due to many factors. This study compared how a language instructor used motivational strategies in face to-face vs. Zoom classes; and how students reacted to these motivational strategies. For these purposes the Motivational Orientation of Language Teaching (MOLT) was used for observations. Results showed that while the teacher used many of the same motivational strategies in both sections, some categories like Social Chat, Referential Questions and Volunteering had significantly …

Tiktok The Musical: Copyright Issues Raised By The "Ratatouille" Musical, Paige V. Gagliardi
Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts
TikTok the Musical: Copyright Issues Raised by the “Ratatouille” Musical, explores the growing trend in derivative works and the failures of current copyright law to address it. This article asserts that while derivative works are excellent creative outlets, a safe haven in a tumultuous world, allowing appropriation of copyrights via the fair use doctrine conflicts with the foundations of copyright law. This article argues that IP giants such as the Walt Disney Company have sent a dangerous message to the general public by allowing the TikTok trend of the #ratatouillemusical to become an actual musical: that unlicensed derivative works …

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
Theoretical models of retinal hemodynamics showed the modulation of retinal pulsatile patterns (RPPs) by heart rate (HR), yet in-vivo validation and scientific merit of this biological process is lacking. Such evidence is critical for result interpretation, study design, and (patho-)physiological modeling of human biology spanning applications in various medical specialties. In retinal hemodynamic video-recordings, we characterize the morphology of RPPs and assess the impact of modulation by HR or other variables. Principal component analysis isolated two RPPs, i.e., spontaneous venous pulsation (SVP) and optic cup pulsation (OCP). Heart rate modulated SVP and OCP morphology (pFDR < 0.05); age modulated SVP morphology (pFDR < 0.05). In addition, age and HR demonstrated the effect on between-group differences. This knowledge greatly affects future study designs, analyses of between-group differences in RPPs, and biophysical models investigating relationships between RPPs, intracranial, intraocular pressures, and cardiovascular physiology.

Modeling Of Pavement Maintenance Decisions Using Artificial Intelligence Based On Maintenance Unit., Hamdy Faheem, Afaf Mahmoud, Mostafa Hashem, Mohamed A. Abd El Moez
Mansoura Engineering Journal
Recently, all efforts have been directed toward keeping the network functional at a high level by determining the appropriate maintenance or rehabilitation (M & R) treatment. Determining the appropriate M & R strategies for flexible pavements is a complex process and is considered a key component of the Pavement Maintenance Management System (PMMS). Since such a decision system is complex, automated implementation using a pre-trained model via an artificial neural network (ANN) approach is a critical tool for decision-makers. Many studies have been conducted on modeling pavement condition index using ANN to determine the maintenance decision. The Egyptian Code of …

The Puquios of the Salar de Llamara in the Atacama Desert, northern Chile, is a system of small lakes that is characterized by evaporitic mineral deposition and that commonly hosts microbial communities. This region is known for its extreme aridity, solar irradiance, and temperature fluctuations. The Puquios are a highly diverse ecosystem with a variety of sedimentary bottom types. Our previous results identified electrical conductivity (EC) as a first-order environmental control on bottom types. In the present paper, we extend our analysis to examine the effects of additional environmental parameters on bottom types and to consider reasons for the importance …
Differential Operators On Classical Invariant Rings Do Not Lift Modulo P, Jack Jeffries, Anurag K. Singh
Differential Operators On Classical Invariant Rings Do Not Lift Modulo P, Jack Jeffries, Anurag K. Singh
Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications
Levasseur and Stafford described the rings of differential operators on various classical invariant rings of characteristic zero; in each of the cases that they considered, the differential operators form a simple ring. Towards an attack on the simplicity of rings of differential operators on invariant rings of linearly reductive groups over the complex numbers, Smith and Van den Bergh asked if differential operators on the corresponding rings of positive prime characteristic lift to characteristic zero differential operators. We prove that, in general, this is not the case for determinantal hypersurfaces, as well as for Pfaffian and symmetric determinantal hypersurfaces. We …

Despite evidence of vaccine safety and efficacy, vaccine hesitancy remains a major global health threat. The COVID-19 vaccine has presented unique vaccine hesitancy concerns compared to parental vaccine hesitancy towards childhood vaccines. South Carolina (SC) is home to a largely conservative population and historically has some of the lowest vaccination coverage rates in the United States of America. The goal of the current study was to identify factors associated with COVID-19 vaccine intentions among SC residents. From November 2020 to September 2021, 300,000 invitations to participate in community testing and complete an online survey were mailed to randomly selected SC …

The COVID pandemic has changed the world in ways, both large and small, forever. One unexpected way the world changed was when live sports suddenly went dark and esports began experiencing attention from betting audiences that were suddenly starving for content.1 Esports also received a second glance from gaming regulators. And, though not exactly suddenly (even though it felt like it), approvals for wagering on esports were granted in a variety of jurisdictions, most notably Colorado and Nevada.2
A subset of the larger esports environment, peer-to-peer (P2P) skill-based play is hardly a new concept. You can find it …
