Participants included 10 female and 10 male young adult (YA) participants, as well as 10 female and 10 male older adult (OA) participants. Participants retold stories in a silent baseline and five background noise conditions (conversation, monologue, phone call, cocktail, pink noise). Speech fluency and language production measures (cohesive and coherent utterances, lexical-phonological errors, grammatically correct words, Moving Average Type Token Ratio (MATTR), speech rate, and disfluent words) were compared between groups and across …

Towards Color-Based Two-Hand 3d Global Pose Estimation, Fanqing Lin Jun 2022

Towards Color-Based Two-Hand 3d Global Pose Estimation, Fanqing Lin

Theses and Dissertations

Pose estimation and tracking is essential for applications involving human controls. Specifically, as the primary operating tool for human activities, hand pose estimation plays a significant role in applications such as hand tracking, gesture recognition, human-computer interaction and VR/AR. As the field develops, there has been a trend to utilize deep learning to estimate the 2D/3D hand poses using color-based information without depth data. Within the depth-based as well as color-based approaches, the research community has primarily focused on single-hand scenarios in a localized/normalized coordinate system. Due to the fact that both hands are utilized in most applications, we propose …

Correctional Education: A Pathway To Reducing Recidivism In Wisconsin?, Samuel George La Roi Jun 2022

Correctional Education: A Pathway To Reducing Recidivism In Wisconsin?, Samuel George La Roi

Lawrence University Honors Projects

The United States has the highest number of incarcerated individuals per capita of any country in the world. Every single year, a large number of these individuals are released from prison and re-enter their communities. However, within three years, many of them will have recidivated and returned to prison. In Wisconsin, roughly 40% of all individuals released from prison will recidivate within three years. The financial burden of keeping such a high number of people incarcerated is monumental and rising. Identifying solutions to the problem of recidivism is critical to reducing the overall costs of incarceration for society. Correctional education programs …

Rumination And The Gut Microbiome:Effects Of A Brief Mindfulness Intervention, Moeka Kamiya Jun 2022

Rumination And The Gut Microbiome:Effects Of A Brief Mindfulness Intervention, Moeka Kamiya

Lawrence University Honors Projects

Recent work has found relationships between the gut microbiota—the community of organisms that inhabit an animal’s digestive tract—and psychological health. In particular, the gut microbiota of individuals with depression shows a different genetic composition to those without depression. Thus, this study explored how rumination, a predictor of depression, and gut microbiota composition are correlated to detect possible gut microbiota alterations present before depression develops. This study also examined whether a brief mindfulness mobile application intervention, which has been shown to reduce rumination, can increase beneficial bacteria abundance and decrease pathogenic bacteria abundance. Participants were 16 first-year students. They engaged in …

Evaluating The Application Of The Collective Impact Model In Collaborative Health Efforts: A Case Study On Weight Of The Fox Valley, 2013-2019, Natalie J. Lamonto

Lawrence University Honors Projects

The Collective Impact (CI) Model is a relatively new collaborative model commonly used in community-based health efforts. However, there is minimal data on the effectiveness of this model in community health organizations. With the conclusion of Weight of the Fox Valley (WOTFV), a local health effort adhering to the CI Model, in 2019; I set out to examine the application of the CI Model in a real-world setting and its effectiveness in WOTFV. Through archival research and qualitative interviews with former WOTFV members, I use WOTFV as a case study of the CI Model to interpret how the model promoted …

Evaluating The Moderating Effect Of Gender On Adolescents’ Internalizing Symptoms Throughout The First Wave Of Covid-19, Naomi C. Curran Jun 2022

Evaluating The Moderating Effect Of Gender On Adolescents’ Internalizing Symptoms Throughout The First Wave Of Covid-19, Naomi C. Curran

Lawrence University Honors Projects

In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic sent adolescents home to shelter-in-place in relative social isolation, potentially disrupting support networks, and compromising youth mental health. This may particularly impact already vulnerable groups, such as girls and transgender/gender diverse (TGD) adolescents, who experience a greater risk for depression and anxiety disorders than their peers. The present study investigated the moderating effect of gender on adolescents’ internalizing symptoms throughout the first wave of COVID-19. I hypothesized that the onset of the pandemic would increase TGD adolescents’ internalizing symptoms to a greater degree than their cisgender peers, and girls’ internalizing symptoms more than boys’. Data …

An Absence Of Elephants In The Room: Religion, Philosophy, And Negative Numbers In Albert Girard’S A New Discovery In Algebra, Ethan Wilmes Jun 2022

An Absence Of Elephants In The Room: Religion, Philosophy, And Negative Numbers In Albert Girard’S A New Discovery In Algebra, Ethan Wilmes

Lawrence University Honors Projects

In early seventeenth-century Europe, the lines separating theology, science, and humanism were thin; what the modern reader understands as three distinct spheres of knowledge considerably overlapped with one another. Scientific discoveries and innovations coming from new technologies and foreign lands were laden with implications about theology and the human condition. While bland to all but the most fringe historians of mathematics today, the discovery of negative numbers led to a passionate and occasionally fierce epistemological debate throughout Europe. Falling outside of traditional mathematical knowledge, negative numbers found themselves in a sort of existential limbo; however useful they proved themselves to …

Calcium Bistriflimide-Mediated Sulfur(Vi)–Fluoride Exchange (Sufex): Mechanistic Insights Toward Instigating Catalysis, Brian Han, Samuel R. Khasnavis, Matthew Nwerem, Michael Bertagna, Nicholas D. Ball, O. Maduka Ogba

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

We report a mechanistic investigation of calcium bistriflimide-mediated sulfur(VI)–fluoride exchange (SuFEx) between sulfonyl fluorides and amines. We determine the likely pre-activation resting state─a calcium bistriflimide complex with ligated amines─thus allowing for corroborated calculation of the SuFEx activation barrier at ∼21 kcal/mol, compared to 21.5 ± 0.14 kcal/mol derived via kinetics experiments. Transition state analysis revealed: (1) a two-point calcium-substrate contact that activates the sulfur(VI) center and stabilizes the leaving fluoride and (2) a 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane additive that provides Brønsted-base activation of the nucleophilic amine. Stable Ca–F complexes upon sulfonamide formation are likely contributors to inhibited catalytic turnover, and a proof-of-principle redesign …

Methods For Characterizing Groundwater Resources With Sparse In-Situ Data, Ren Nishimura Jun 2022

Methods For Characterizing Groundwater Resources With Sparse In-Situ Data, Ren Nishimura

Theses and Dissertations

Groundwater water resources must be accurately characterized in order to be managed sustainably. Due to the cost to install monitoring wells and challenges in collecting and managing in-situ data, groundwater data is sparse in space and time especially in developing countries. In this study we analyzed long-term groundwater storage changes with limited times-series data where each well had only one groundwater measurement in time. We developed methods to synthetically create times-series groundwater table elevation (WTE) by clustering wells with uniform grid and k-means-constrained clustering and creating pseudo wells. Pseudo wells with the WTE values from the cluster-member wells were temporally …

BACKGROUND:

The excess incidence and mortality due to prostate cancer that impacts African American men constitutes the largest of all cancer disparities. Patient navigation is a patient-centered healthcare system intervention to eliminate barriers to timely, high-quality care across the cancer continuum and improves health outcomes among vulnerable patients. However, little is known regarding the extent to which navigation programs include cultural humility to address prostate cancer disparities among African American men. We present a scoping review protocol of an in-depth examination of navigation programs in prostate cancer care-including navigation activities/procedures, training, and management-with a special focus on cultural context and …

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Resonant tunneling is a quantum-mechanical effect in which electron transport is controlled by the discrete energy levels within a quantum-well (QW) structure. A ferroelectric resonant tunneling diode (RTD) exploits the switchable electric polarization state of the QW barrier to tune the device resistance. Here, the discovery of robust room-temperature ferroelectric-modulated resonant tunneling and negative differential resistance (NDR) behaviors in all-perovskite-oxide BaTiO3/SrRuO3/BaTiO3 QW structures is reported. The resonant current amplitude and voltage are tunable by the switchable polarization of the BaTiO3 ferroelectric with the NDR ratio modulated by ≈3 orders of magnitude and an OFF/ON …

ICH Q10 was published in 2008, and presented a model for an effective Pharmaceutical Quality System (PQS). However, the industry still has some way to go in embracing and implementing its principles in order to achieve greater product realisation, to establish and maintain a state of control, and to facilitate continual improvement.

ICH Q10 introduced us to two key enablers: Knowledge Management (KM) and Quality Risk Management (QRM).[1] While the pharmaceutical industry has made progress in implementing the principles of QRM since 2008, there has been significantly slower progress in implementing knowledge management practices. However, there may be solutions …

A Westerly Wind Dominated Puna Plateau During Deposition Of Upper Pleistocene Loessic Sediments In The Subtropical Andes, South America, Alex Pullen, David L. Barbeau Jr, Andrew Leier, Madison Ward, Austin Bruner, Mary Kate Fidler

Faculty Publications

The Tafí del Valle depression (~27° S) in the eastern Andes of Argentina provides a record of late Pleistocene dust deposition in the subtropics of South America. We present large-n U-Pb geochronology data for detrital zircons from upper Pleistocene loess-paleosol deposits. When compared to regional data, the age spectra from the Tafí del Valle samples are most like the southern Puna Plateau, supporting derivation largely from the west and northwest. This runs counter to hypotheses suggesting these loessic sediments were derived from the low elevation plains to the east or extra-Andean Patagonia. Mapping of linear wind erosion features on …

Resilience Is Low Among Both Military And Non-Military Populations With Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Kelsey Roberts, Janet Wilmoth, Shannon M. Monnat

Population Health Research Brief Series

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) affects the lives of 12 million people in the United States. While commonly thought of in relation to military personnel and veterans, PTSD is also common among the general public. Resilience - the ability to cope with stressful events - is essential for recovering from PTSD. This data slice uses data from the National Wellbeing Survey to examine resilience among U.S. working-age adults with and without PTSD by their relationship to the military. Results show that those with PTSD have less resilience than those who have not experienced PTSD. In addition, those with military experience are …

Criminal Enforcement Of Section 2 Of The Sherman Act: An Empirical Assessment, Daniel A. Crane Jun 2022

Criminal Enforcement Of Section 2 Of The Sherman Act: An Empirical Assessment, Daniel A. Crane

Law & Economics Working Papers

The Biden Justice Department has announced that it may begin to bring criminal monopolization cases under Section 2 of the Sherman Act, a practice that the Department has not employed in almost half a century. The Department's leadership has justified this idea by asserting that it used to be common practice for the Antitrust Division to bring such cases. This Article presents the findings of an empirical study of all of the Justice Department's antitrust case filings. It finds that the Justice Depart brought 175 criminal monopolization cases between 1903 and 1977, but that only 20 of these involved unilateral …

The Moderating Effect Of Mission Statement Integration Within Non-Profit Organizations, Emma Christine Harris Jun 2022

The Moderating Effect Of Mission Statement Integration Within Non-Profit Organizations, Emma Christine Harris

Theses and Dissertations

Understanding non-profit organizational factors that distinguish successful companies from unsuccessful companies will aid in the implementation of clearer business planning strategies (Bart, 1998). Past research has shown that companywide mission statements have the capability to optimize productivity and energize the workforce (Patel et al., 2015). This study aimed to examine the effects of mission statements on prevalent factors linked to nonprofit organizational success. It was hypothesized that (1) the integration of the mission statement into the work environment moderates the relation between P-O fit and employee engagement and (2) mission statement integration also moderates the relation between P-O fit and …

The blackfin tuna, Thunnus atlanticus, is a small tropical tuna exploited by recreational and commercial fisheries in various parts of its range. Information on stock structure is needed to develop management plans for this species but is currently lacking. In this work, 470 blackfin tuna from nine geographic populations were assayed at 13 homologous microsatellite markers to provide a first assessment of stock structure across the species range. The overall divergence among locality samples was very low (overall FST = 0.0004) indicating high connectivity of blackfin tuna across their range. No clear grouping of localities in differentiated units was …

For people with early or moderate dementia, there are benefits to them continuing to live in their own homes for as long as possible, both in improved quality of life and associated measures such as increased social contact, increased physical activity and lower use of medication, and reduced costs and burden of care. Tools to help extend period of independent living, and to maintain quality of life in this period, are lacking. Systems exist to monitor individuals for problems, e.g. falls or wandering from the home, but there is scope for development of computerised support to help maintain activity in …

Adenosine 5′-triphosphate, or ATP, is the primary molecule for storing and transferring energy in cells. ATP is mainly produced via oxidative phosphorylation in mitochondria, and to a lesser extent, via glycolysis in the cytosol. In general, cytosolic glycolysis is the primary ATP producer in proliferative cells or cells subjected to hypoxia. On the other hand, mitochondria produce over 90% of cellular ATP in differentiated cells under normoxic conditions. Under pathological conditions, ATP demand rises to meet the needs of biosynthesis for cellular repair, signaling transduction for stress responses, and biochemical processes. These changes affect how mitochondria and cytosolic glycolysis function …
