BACKGROUND: Hyperphosphorylation of tau leads to conformational changes that destabilize microtubules and hinder axonal transport in Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, it remains unknown whether white matter (WM) decline due to AD is associated with specific Tau phosphorylation site(s).
METHODS: In autosomal dominant AD (ADAD) mutation carriers (MC) and non-carriers (NC) we compared cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) phosphorylation at tau sites (pT217, pT181, pS202, and pT205) and total tau with WM measures, as derived from diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), and cognition. A WM composite metric, derived from a principal component analysis, was used to identify spatial decline seen in ADAD.
RESULTS: The …

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers
Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is a heterogeneous group of inborn errors of immunity characterized by reduced serum concentrations of different immunoglobulin isotypes. CVID is the most prevalent symptomatic antibody deficiency with a broad range of infectious and non-infectious clinical manifestations. Various genetic and immunological defects are known to be involved in the pathogenesis of CVID. Monogenic defects account for the pathogenesis of about 20-50% of CVID patients, while a variety of cases do not have a defined genetic background. Deficiencies in molecules of B cell receptor signaling or other pathways involving B-cell development, activation, and proliferation could be associated with …

A Simplified Model For The Intermediate Structure Of Strong Fire Whirls, Forman A. Williams
A Simplified Model For The Intermediate Structure Of Strong Fire Whirls, Forman A. Williams
Progress in Scale Modeling, an International Journal
A model is described for the overall structure of intense fire whirls, based on a spatially evolving vortex, with circulation enhancement driven by the axial acceleration of low-density gas in the core through the axial pressure gradient. The axial acceleration increases the entrainment rate into the core which, through mass conservation, increases the circulation if the angle between the tangential and radial velocity components remains fixed. The two-zone model employs general balance equations for regions inside and outside a cylinder of fixed radius, each inviscid, the inside region being presumed to have a constant density small compared with the (constant) …

Users often invoke a virtual assistant to quickly accomplish routine tasks that require the corresponding components of a device to be woken up from an idle state prior to performing the desired action. Activating the components introduces an inherent latency that can noticeably raise the task completion time and degrade the user experience. This disclosure describes techniques to reduce the latency involved by proactively waking up idle device components by predicting the intended task based on the initial words in a user’s spoken command to a voice based virtual assistant. The net effect of starting the wake-up process based on …

A good user interface design provides user interface elements that contrast sufficiently with their surroundings. While color contrasting is relatively simple to do when there is one surrounding color, when choosing foreground colors between two background colors, the foreground must simultaneously contrast with both background colors. Given two background colors and an initial foreground color, this disclosure describes techniques to automatically select a foreground color that contrasts with both background colors and is similar in hue to the initial foreground color. The choice of colors can be constrained to a palette of valid colors grouped by similar hue. Given a …

ORBioM (Open Research BioSciences Meeting)
Background: Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disorder, characterised by the accumulation of plaque on the walls of the arteries. Rupture of this plaque often results in life threatening clinical complications such as heart attack and stroke, which currently are the two leading causes of global mortality. Dietary guidelines usually condemn the consumption of whole fat dairy products due to their saturated fat content and this ingredient’s association with cholesterol and cardiovascular diseases, such as atherosclerosis. This viewpoint however, is dated and controversial as much data is emerging on the cardiometabolic benefits of polar lipids found in dairy products which are …

Investigating The Antagonistic Activity Of Asymptomatic Bacteriuria Against Uropathogenic E. Coli., Ciara Kenneally
ORBioM (Open Research BioSciences Meeting)
Asymptomatic bacteriuria (ABU) is the presence of bacteria in urine, resembling a state of commensalism. Bacteria are characterised as ABU when they have been isolated from two consecutive urine samples (≥ 105 CFU/ml) from individuals, but without symptoms attributable to a urinary tract infection (UTI). ABU Escherichia coli strains have evolved from uropathogenic ancestors and lack virulence factors associated with uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC). UPEC are the main etiological agent of urinary tract infections (UTIs), attributable to > 80% of cases. The frequency at which multidrug-resistant UPEC are isolated is affecting guidelines for use of former first-line antibiotics for UTIs, …
