Diatoms are known to fractionate silicon isotopes during the formation of their frustules causing the silicon isotopic composition of biogenic silica to track the degree of silicic acid consumption in surface waters. Despite a growing body of work that uses this proxy to reconstruct past changes in silicic acid utilization, the understanding of the benthic silicon cycle, particularly the identification and quantification of the processes that potentially alter the silicon isotopic composition of biogenic silica during early diagenesis is still lacking. We investigated these processes by comparing the silicon isotopic composition of pore water silicic acid, biogenic silica and, for …

Working Paper No. 54, Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen And Ecological Economics, Miriam Silverman
Working Paper No. 54, Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen And Ecological Economics, Miriam Silverman
Working Papers in Economics
This inquiry seeks to establish that in his book The Entropy Law and the Economic Process [1971] (2013), author Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen provides a foundation for Ecological Economics. The Entropy Law implies that the economic process is limited because it is reliant on finite natural resources, e.g., fossil fuels and minerals, as the economic process involves relying upon low-entropy natural resources in the production of consumer goods, and then results in the discarding of high-entropy waste, e.g., heat in the form of CO2 and other greenhouse gasses, into the environment, eventually resulting in noticeable degradation. Notably, these ideas from Georgescu-Roegen’s …

Working Paper No. 59, Cultural Imperialism And Hegemony, Maria Zavala
Working Papers in Economics
While the traditional colonial imperialism of France and Great Britain ended after World War Two, it can be argued that a new form of imperialism replaced it. What is known as “cultural imperialism” includes the art of inserting a covert idea into person's mind by use of popular culture. Herein, Antonio Gramsci’s ideas of cultural imperialism are contemplated. This paper explores the topic by focusing upon some of the effects that popular American music has had on Latin music and the changes in culturally acceptable trends that have followed. Then, American beauty standards and the Eurocentric beauty standards of Latin …

Working Paper No. 64, Ecological Economics Versus Environmental Economics, Audrey Demeaux
Working Papers in Economics
This inquiry seeks to establish that the field within the Discipline of Economic Science known as Ecological Economics is based upon assumptions and methodological foundations that differ from the field of Environmental Economics. It shall be argued that Environmental Economics did not emerge as the result of a new shift in economic thinking, but rather formed around a reorientation of standard neoclassical assumptions. This was undertaken in an effort to address environmental issues emerging several decades back. In contrast, it shall be argued that the field of Ecological Economics has brought to the Economics Discipline an appreciation for novel assumptions …

Working Paper No. 66, Sir John Bowring, Trade Policies And Economic Development In Siam, Jackrit Kamudhamas
Working Papers in Economics
This inquiry seeks to establish that during the mid-19th century Sir John Bowring emerged as a proponent who formulated distinct trade policies that served to promote the economic development of Siam (Thailand). This thesis is supported with three parts. The first part investigates the trade policies of the Burney Treaty as the first step towards the initiation of a new form of foreign trade policies between Siam and the British Empire and other western countries. The second part explores further Sir Bowing’s thoughts and his mission in achieving the adjusting agreements of the Bowring Treaty. And lastly, the third part …

Working Paper No. 65, On Debt, Enclosure And Witchcraft, Anonymous
Working Papers in Economics
This inquiry seeks to establish that the process of commons-enclosure taking place in 14th-16th century Europe also required an “enclosure” of the female body, which was carried out by introducing radically novel conceptions of debt. The dual processes of bodily dispossession and debt imposition acted as a single force which is paradoxically the origin and effect of capitalist accumulation. This process began in Europe during the period of “transition” between feudalism and capitalism but has remained an essential component of capitalist accumulation through to globalization in contemporary times. To support this thesis, this inquiry considers the evolution of debt; the …

Pentraxin-related protein 3 (PTX3), commonly produced by myeloid and endothelial cells, is a humoral pattern recognition protein of the innate immune system. Because PTX3 plasma levels of patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) are high and most circulating cells in patients with CLL are CLL cells, we reasoned that CLL cells produce PTX3. Western immunoblotting revealed that low-density cells from seven of seven patients with CLL produce high levels of PTX3, flow cytometry analysis revealed that the PTX3-producing cells are B lymphocytes coexpressing CD19 and CD5, and confocal microscopy showed that PTX3 is present in the cytoplasm of CLL cells. …

Background: Though the association between anxiety disorders and suicidal behavior is well-described, the impact of anxiety symptoms on suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STB) across different mood disorders is still unclear.
Methods: We performed a registry-based retrospective study utilizing outcome measure data collected by the National Network of Depression Centers (NNDC), a nationwide nonprofit consortium of 26 leading clinical and academic member centers in the United States. The sample consisted of 2607 outpatients with mood disorders (major depressive disorder or bipolar disorders). Demographic and clinical variables were compared based on the presence or absence of STB and severity of anxiety symptoms …

Gut Dysbiosis And Age-Related Neurological Diseases In Females, Janelle M Korf, Bhanu P Ganesh, Louise D Mccullough
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Historically, females have been underrepresented in biological research. With increased interest in the gut microbiome and the gut-brain axis, it is important for researchers to pursue studies that consider sex as a biological variable. The composition of the gut microbiome is influenced by environmental factors, disease, diet, and varies with age and by sex. Detrimental changes in the gut microbiome, referred to as dysbiosis, is believed to influence the development and progression of age-related neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, and stroke. Many are investigating the changes in microbial populations in order or to better understand …
Cultural Diversity And The Alternate History In Kim Newman’S Novel Anno Dracula, Tatheer Assim Faiq
Cultural Diversity And The Alternate History In Kim Newman’S Novel Anno Dracula, Tatheer Assim Faiq
Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences
The paper offers a new insight into the global perception of vampirism as cultural diversity tradition lens in the British writer Kim Newman’s novel Anno Dracula, published in 1992. The historical allusions throughout the novel presents the discourse of intercultural concepts that does not only speak to the Western Dracula tradition and the 19th Century English historical setting but also to our own 21st Century with its multicultural emerging societal relations. In a politically charged destruction of a fictional setting, the writer shows a kind of prevailing evil that defies the existence of mankind. The paper presents …

Masculinity, Health Beliefs And Implications For Health Policy Among Men In Trinidad And Tobago, Oscar N. Ocho
Dissertations
Over the last three decades, men's health has emerged as an area of research interest. The relationship between male socialization, the performance of masculinity and health behaviour has been well established. Within the Caribbean, however, there is a gap in the literature on how masculinity affects health beliefs and behaviour.
This study explored men's accounts of "doing" masculinity and the implications for health beliefs and behaviours in order to make recommendations for developing male sensitive health services.

Erectile dysfunction (ED), a complication of diabetes mellitus (DM), affects 50–75% of men with diabetes. Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) is a liver-derived metabolic regulator which plays a role in insulin-independent glucose uptake in adipocytes. We designed a clinical study and an animal experiment to investigate the relationship between FGF21 and DM-induced ED. The clinical study enrolled 93 participants aged > 18 years (61 patients with type 2 DM and 32 healthy controls) from Taian City Central Hospital (TCCH) in Shandong Province, China, amongst whom the association between serum FGF21 and diabetic ED was analyzed. To further validate this association, we …

Triple Roots That Have More Than Three Meanings In Language Scales - Giving Expressions As A Model, Wadah Ali Ahmed
Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences
In line with a series of studies in Ibn Faris' Dictionary of Language Standards, the three roots are survived whereby Ibn Faris attributed their meanings to more than three meanings, trying to attribute these original meanings into one original meaning. This study is concerned with the linguistic field (words indicating the giving) - and it was preceded by two studies, the first study included the linguistic field: (expressions indicating solidarity) and the second study included the linguistic field: (expressions indicating the going). This research is marked by (the triple roots that have more than three meanings in the language standards- …

The transmission of airborne pathogens is considered to be the main route through which a number of known and emerging respiratory diseases infect their hosts. While physical distancing and mask wearing may help mitigate short-range transmission, the extent of long-range transmission in closed spaces where a pathogen remains suspended in the air remains unknown. We have developed a method to detect viable virus particles by using an aerosolized bacteriophage Phi6 in combination with its host Pseudomonas phaseolicola, which when seeded on agar plates acts as a virus detector that can be placed at a range of distances away from …

After the success of immunotherapy in the treatment of advanced metastatic cancer, further evaluation in earlier settings, including high-risk, surgically-resectable disease is underway. Potential benefits of a neoadjuvant immunotherapeutic approach include presurgical tumor shrinkage, reduced surgical morbidity, early eradication of micrometastases and prevention of distant disease, and greater antigen-specific T cell response. For some cancers, pathologic response has been established as a surrogate measure for long-term outcomes, therefore offering the ability for early and objective assessment of treatment efficacy and the potential to inform and personalize adjuvant treatment clinical decision-making. Leveraging the neoadjuvant treatment setting offers the ability to deeply …

2020-Current year OA Pubs
BACKGROUND: Mechanically ventilated patients have experienced greater periods of prolonged deep sedation during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Multiple studies from the pre-COVID era demonstrate that early deep sedation is associated with worse outcome. Despite this, there is a lack of data on sedation depth and its impact on outcome for mechanically ventilated patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. We sought to characterize the emergency department (ED) and intensive care unit (ICU) sedation practices during the COVID-19 pandemic, and to determine if early deep sedation was associated with worse clinical outcomes.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Dual-center, retrospective cohort study conducted over …

Predictors Of Cessation Outcomes Among Older Adult Smokers Enrolled In A Proactive Tobacco Quitline Intervention, Margaret C. Fahey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The prevalence of cigarette smoking has not declined among older adults. Further, this age group is more impacted by the negative health effects of smoking. Cessation trials rarely report quitting outcomes exclusively among older adults and fewer explore individual characteristics which impact cessation within this population. This study aimed to identify individual characteristics predicting an older adult smoker’s likelihood of successful quitting after engaging in a proactive tobacco quit line intervention. Older adult (>60 years) TRICARE beneficiaries enrolled in a four-session proactive tobacco quit line with eight-weeks of nicotine replacement therapy reported demographics and information about cigarette use history, …

Constructing Students’ Speech Rights, From College Admissions To Professional Schools, Todd E. Pettys
San Diego Law Review
In a closely watched 2021 ruling concerning a high school student’s profane post on Snapchat, the Supreme Court declined to shed significant light on the murky First Amendment status of speech that K-12 students produce off campus, whether on social media or elsewhere. Legal uncertainties concerning such speech afflict higher education, as well. I focus on two dimensions of that uncertainty here. First, many admissions officers say they look at college and university applicants’ social-media posts when making their admissions decisions. Yet only one federal appellate court has said anything at all about whether the First Amendment restricts public postsecondary …

What Covid-19 Laid Bare: Adventures In Workers’ Compensation Causation, Michael C. Duff
San Diego Law Review
This Article performs a close analysis of workers’ compensation coverage of COVID-19 and arrives at the conclusion that it should not be “impossible” to prove in a legal sense that an employee’s COVID-19 was caused by work. Scientific proof is not the same as legal proof: Workers’ compensation law has never required that claims must be supported by irrefutable scientific proof of workplace causation. Yet repeatedly one heard this suggestion during public discussion on workers’ compensation coverage of employees.
Still, there is good evidence that even when workers’ compensation undisputedly covers work-related disease, employers seldom pay benefits and states do …

Taking One For The Team: Covid-19 Eviction Moratoria As Regulatory Takings, Charles Kausen
San Diego Law Review
This Comment explores potential Fifth Amendment challenges to COVID-19 eviction restrictions. Part II introduces California and federal COVID-19 eviction laws and lays out an organizational framework for analysis. Part III provides background on relevant regulatory takings jurisprudence. Part IV analyzes COVID-19 residential eviction laws under relevant regulatory takings tests. Part V considers judges’ potential impact on eviction moratorium challenges. Finally, Part VI proposes the solution that the Federal Government should pass legislation to provide direct rent relief for COVID-19-affected tenants.
